during any typical assemblage of 48 consecutive weekend-type hours, this brendan-type person is known to demonstrate all characteristics generally considered to be commendable in a worthy friend.
these characteristics include, but are not limited to: witty and prompt text-messaging; a liberal yet discriminating disregard of 'good choices' with regard to both physical health and legal tradition; impressive levels of patience with friends' silly and/or frustrating behavior; a thorough and deftly-wielded command of the english language; prescience regarding the expected quality of upcoming aural entertainment; a discerning eye for appropriate companionship; competent and compassionate interaction with alcohol-addled and tear-stained minds; adherence to the unwritten rules of Where We Must Be When; occasional bursts of psychic communication; a wide range of extremely expressive facial arrangements for use in loud rooms; an instinctual aesthetically-correct reaction to properly dropped beats; judicious usage of the words 'no', 'yes', and 'obviously'; finely-tuned powers of observation, especially with regard to the complexity of human interaction; a working knowledge of a manual-transmission automobile; an appreciation of the finer points of interesting and amusing conversation and other word exchanges; mind-boggling endurance; excellent prioritization and short-term goal-accomplishment; a full brain; a good heart; and, of course, a startling ability to manipulate body parts and execute complex maneuvers in time with a bassline.
i feel--to understate the situation entirely--exceedingly fortunate to have him in my life.

Shiny dimes attract a certain kind of child...those less interested in value than in that captivating, sparkling glow. How quickly they overlook a 1989 quarter when a 2007 dime is within reach. But these same children grow bored of even shiny objects after a time. It is a curious predicament for coins to navigate, having always to wonder about their shine, and knowing that, regardless, the child’s attention will soon be carried off by a new object.

Brief background: This is a reply to a writer for SFGate.com who wrote two recent problematic editorials: the first about Whole Foods Market and the second about the responses he received to the first article. In his second article, he linked to an article about the current debate over a bill (the ENDA) that would protect lesbians and gays from job discrimination.

Drops. Plump and buzzing. No. Droplets...there must be a difference...sexier, elegant...droplets of bass like flawlessly formed tears, deep and thick and reverberating off the tongue, hit the back of the throat, settling into the spine, a gentle hum left in their wake. Aching with symmetry, they wiggle inside, unobtrusively, the soundscape is teased toward this or that urban wasteland or decaying cement city overtaken decades ago by the well-fed roots of the Red Maple an...

Parson Jakely, having tempted fate with far too attractive an offer, swerved to dodge an oncoming truck only to find himself in a temporary state of confused weightlessness that ended with the realization that gravity was still in working order and was in fact pressing him to the ceiling of his upturned Pontiac as it was plummeting toward the bottom of Bristle’s Ravine, where a minor stream—more like a sometimes-trickle of cold and dirty rainy-season mountain runoff—awaited ...

about me
outside on the dirt, surrounded by friends, dancing our asses off to the basslines of ridiculously glitchy breakbeats, just before sunrise.
in a living room, surrounded by friends, discussing critical & cultural theory, intent on understanding why everything is so tear-inducingly fucked up, hopeful that we may find solutions - however partial and contingent they may be.
in a beautiful kitchen, by myself, supplied with unlimited ingredients and cookware, blessed with hours of time until I find myself surrounded by hungry friends.
in the street, among thousands of people, confronting the wielders of illegitimate power, experiencing the reality of collective action.
in a coffee shop, surround by strangers, surging from coffee-induced mania, in front of my laptop, writing until my fingers hurt.
...these are my favorite extremes.
