Abai is the modern pronounciation of the sanskrit ABHAYA
[similar to the ancient exclamation jaya becoming the modern jai]

A- prefix indicating the negative or contrary sense

Bhaya- noun meaning fear, alarm, dread, apprehension, terror, dismay, danger, peril, distress; examples of use are:
Bhayakara- dangerous (literally fear-maker)
bhayatrasta- frightened (literally trembling with fear)
bhayada- inspiring fear (lit. fear-gifting)
bhayanASana- removing fear (lit. fear-destroying)
bhayasaMhRSaroman- horrified, having hair stand with fear
bhayahArin- dispelling fear
bhayaDiNDima- terror drum (a drum used in battle)

Abaya: fearless, unafraid, not dangerous, secure, undaunted, absence or removal of fear, peace, also a sacrificial hymn recited to obtain personal security

Abhaya- is not just the peace that is what exists without fear but it is the peace that exists when one passes through the storm of fear, when fear has been negated. Abhaya is the state reached when one has overcome fear- the security that is felt when fear has been released. Not thinking of things we need to fear is a weak lack of consciousness; knowing that which is dangerous yet brave and strong enough to face it is abhaya.
