for a million reasons i am forever grateful that our paths crossed in chiapas, mexico. it brought me a sister, a friend, and an example. sarah's laughter is infectious and uplifting, her beauty undeniable - it's a beauty that shines from within and just makes her already stunning, natural, physical beauty all that much more. i have the utmost respect for the path of service that she walks, the sense of adventure she nurtures, and the center from which it comes, and i'm so proud of her for following through with a dream - if i ever have a baby, YOU will be my midwife - i can think of no better candidate for helping a new life into the world. little sister, you have and continue to teach me so much, and it is such an honor to have such a womanfriend in my life. may you forever be granted your wishes of seeing monkeys in the trees - even if they announce their presence by (nearly) peeing on you.

We have been telling the poeple that this is the
the fires continue to burn, though the wind is now resting. and most evacuees have been able to return home -- if their home is still standing. i flew in to san diego from dc on monday night and was amazed by how convincingly the hills and mountains surrounding the city were able to pose as volcanos. red flames dripping and winding down their bodies.. it was strikingly beautiful.. and momentarily made me think of the flames wrapping around the arm of an also strikingly beautiful woman i know....

last week we drove deep into the west bank. past settlements and walls and ancient terraces and beautiful villages tucked into hillsides and valleys. we drove our van, which runs on falafel oil, to the small palestinian town of marda. where there was once a permaculture center. it was destroyed in 2000 and building interest in rebuilding is proving to be a challenge for the few who are determined to move forward with the project. we went for a mother's day feast and there were generations of ...
