The train I took home from work today was just sitting in the station and from the looks on people’s faces; it had been there for a minute. Then a woman in a yellow jacket emerged from the crowd and walked up to a large rolling suitcase. She was a BART worker. What's up, my folk? This is Nyambezi (ny-am-BAY-zee), or Bezi, for short. I am a sociopolitical rap artist/activist, based right here in the beautiful Bay Area. Some of you may recognize the name of the Hip Hop band I used to be a member of: "The Subterraneanz". I'm a solo act now and I have just finished my first album as a solo artist: "Nyambezi- Enter the Black Bodhisattva". It's essentially a summation of the perspectives I've gained as a result of a life spent in pursuit of higher consciousness. Some of the experiences I've had which shaped those perspectives will be familiar (tha' Hood, race, gender, society, etc). Others will undoubtedly seem unique from a Hip Hop context (10 day Buddhist retreat, travel through India). The lyrics are thoughtful, honest, intelligent, engaging, self-aware and self-critical, without being self-absorbed. The music is an innovative combination of traditional Hip Hop motifs and rock, protest folk, jazz and world influences. I actually compose and play all the music myself- no samples at all, unless it's me sampling me! I like to think of myself as a "warrior-monk" of rap.
