Erik gives the best reiki-styled head&shoulder massages ever!
This guy should be in business.
I definitely feel a kinship with his Viking blood and my Newfoundland heritage ...
but I think he is just one of those peeps that you can't help but feel happy and comfortable around.
Much love,
KelliMA

Que pasa?

It's been a while since I last wrote about my research on the brain and mood, due mostly to the fact that I've been away and only returned a few days ago. I was also saving up for this email, which is about some amazing new sound technologies which have proven scientific effects on our brains.

My greatest inspiration recently has been my introduction to Hemisync sound technology which uses binaural beats to deliver stimulus to the brain which has a profoundly positive affect on my brain a... read more

BRAIN CHEMISTRY AND YOU: Love, Crying, Stress, Depression, and Dark Days

Since my last blog I have discovered a whole new plethora of information about our brains and the nervous system. I am discovering things that will help promote longer life, and a healthy brain, but also about why we cry, why we love, and why stress is so destructive.

In this blog I will answer a few questions:

Why do we cry?
What is love and how do we bond with others?
Why is sleep is so important and how is... read more

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Important nutritionally essential omega-3 fatty acids are: α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The human body cannot synthesize omega-3 fatty acids de novo, but it can form unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids from the eighteen-carbon omega-3 fatty acid, α-linolenic acid. These conversions occur competitively with omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential close... read more

Mood is dependent on our state of mind and also on what we consume. The latter is due to the fact that the neurotransmitters that regulate our mood are synthesized in our body from amino acids (proteins) that we injest.

Since amino acids are essential to our emotional well being, I started analyzing the food that I eat to determine if my diet included all of the amino acids I need. It was in this process that I discovered Methionine, an essential amino acid which plays a vital role in ou... read more

I began my interest in brain chemistry about five years ago. I wondered how drugs, supplements, pharmeceuticals etc affected our minds. What is depression? What makes us alert? Why do I get blue in the winter? Why does taking a pill help me with my ADD? How could taking a supplement or an anti-depresseant make us happy... and what is happiness anyway?

That's why I began my research.

Two years ago I was also introduced to the notion of ADD. I had struggled with my lack of focus ... read more

Poetry

My favourite...
From October Fullness, Pablo Neruda:

Little by little, and also in great leaps,
life happened to me,
and how insignificant this business is.
These veins carried my blood,
which I scarcely ever saw,
I breathed the air of so many places
without keeping a sample of any.
In the end, everyone is aware of this:
nobody keeps any of what he has,
and life is only a borrowing of bones.
The best thing was learning not to have too much
either of sorrow or of joy,
to hope for the chance of a last drop,
to ask more from honey and from twilight.

Perhaps it was my punishment.
Perhaps I was condemned to be happy.
Let it be known that nobody crossed my path without sharing my being.

I, the River
by Erik Paulsson

A raindrop I fell from the sky,
onto the slopes of an ancient rock
older than our memory of the moon.
There I merged with silver tears,
recounting dreams from an ocean of forgotten souls.

In unity we become a puddle,
glistening in the cold morning dawn.
A chorus of voices we grew,
until gravity invited us on a journey.

Stones turned to earth,
grey turned to brown,
and green,
and red,
our offering colours the world.

Other travelers from the earth and sky
join our march,
soldiers of life,
blood of this body,
pulsing with each heartbeat of the wind.

Over moss and weed we tumble
and sing our melodies,
in harmony with the precious day,
and the solitude of night.
The moon weeps for our passing,
the sun soothes its melancholy heart.

Gathering we become a symphony
playing music written by the stars,
we rise to a crescendo,
and crash to the earth,
with a torrent of brass and timpanis.

This river I have become,
the conscience of all that came before,
pages from the book of time,
filled with the prose of countless ghosts,
yet still unwritten.

I cannot be stopped,
for my will is for the sea.
I am called there as it always must be,
for when I join the mighty ocean,
I shall be no more,
becoming one with the great mother
from whose womb we were all born.

And somewhere a drop of rain,
again falls from heaven.

-Erik

I wrote that sitting by the sea in Chile, in the same place Pablo Neruda wrote his poetry. It was a beautiful day.
