about me
I was born in Eugene, Oregon into a family of athletes and teachers. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a b-boy, a ninja, and a rockstar with a mohawk. Over time, my childhood dreams became passions in Movement, Music, and Healing Arts. I'm grateful to my family for always encouraging me to manifest my dreams.
When I was 11, I picked up the sax and my family moved to a rural Oregon city. The sax taught me how to express myself through music and eventually took me back to my hometown for school at the UofO. I focused on ethnomusicology and performance, playing in musical projects ranging from jazz ensembles, the contemporary classical "Twisted Oak Sax Quartet," an experimental rock group with Israel Nebecker, a local Brazilian eclectic batuqueria, meditative soundscape improv, and others. I love to play and improvise with anyone, and make music out of anything. My penchant for experimentalism stems from remix culture, regional musical cultures, maverick composers, and free improvisers that cut corners between genres, from glitch-hop & hard-bop, free-jazz & freak-folk, free-world & field recordings, to lowercase & IDM.
I play the berimbau. In 2001, I was baptized into the world of capoeira with the nickname “Beija Flor.” I've trained in Brazil and studied with many teachers, all from the Cordão de Ouro lineage of Mestre Suassuna. Capoeira is many things to me. It's a complex path and it's beautiful... it's my favorite game, and it can only be understood by playing it.
I love to sing. After moving to Oakland in 2008 I began studying Tian Gong, and realized the importance of healing through the expressive arts. I became a certified sound healer and found a spiritual path that bridges qi gong with healing through spontaneity and expression.
I love to dance. I'm a kinesthetic_visual+sound learner and feel my soul move through me when I dance. Martial arts, streetdance, and celestial dance - we are the way we move.
And sometimes I sport a faux-hawk to forge my dreams in honor of my inner kid.
Vision:
To bridge the expressive and healing arts into one circle.
In honor of the Earth, we take part in the evolution of the Cipher as an expression of humanity’s oldest healing ceremony:
To gather together and commune through music, movement, and ritual.

After cleansing and selling/giving away most of my clutter I packed some books, clothes, and the musical devices I couldn't bear to part w/ into my Jetta and relocated to this beautiful land where "downpour" means what a Eugenean calls drizzle.
I've managed to find my way to the café where I'm writing this, but the Yay is still immensely foreign to me. Would love anyone who gave me leads on:

Earned my Blue and Yellow!
(Next Weekend (Oct. 5-7th), Mestre Urubu will be hosting a capoeira batizado (baptism - sort of like a belt ceremony, but Brazilian style w/ workshops, ritual, performance, and festa). I'm gonna be getting my next cord and would love for anyone in the bay to come watch and support. The ceremony will be Saturday Oct. 6th at 2 o'clock at the Booker T. Washington Community Center, 800 Presidio Ave.
Love you all!
