<div>http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?oyymnldmymm
---
This is the first demo recording session of JFJO's new project Ludwig, in which they 'rework' Beethoven's 3rd &amp; 6th symphonies in a way only JFJO could. This project is slated to premiere on June 12th, 2010 at the 2010 OK Mozart Festival in Bartlesville, OK. As this is a demo session, only Movements I &amp; II of Symphony No. 3 were recorded.

From http://www.jfjo.com:

These epic works have been whittled down and reconstituted in a modern light. JFJO brings Beethoven to life in a new and exciting manner. Channeling the spirits of not only Beethoven &amp; Karajan but Led Zeppelin &amp; Radiohead as well, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey are turning Beethoven's 3rd &amp; 6th symphonies into modern music for today's audiences. Taking 'Eroica' &amp; 'Pastoral' and condensing them, the band has transformed the symphonies into contemporary music for the young and old alike.</div>

shelter from the storm

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/acoustichrmny/blog/dc6dceda-59b5-4f99-a88c-2239f21e93b5"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/24f/eab/24feab57-168e-4a17-86eb-46824fc238fc.thumb" width="65" height="46" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>this song popped up on rhapsody, the music service i use, and it just calmed me like no other. it was strange. the words, the acoustic guitar, dylan's voice...all came together. very sublime.
---
'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved.
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail,
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed.
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love.
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn?
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose.
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

    </a>
										<div>Wichita
A Short Story
---
It was warm and the sun was raised high into the roof of the sky. Melinda and I had been walking for oh, approximately, six hours. Earlier in the day we had flown into Wichita. In Wichita, we ran into two old compadres from Spain and sat and talked over White Russians. Paco, the older of the two and slimmer spoke first.

“Eet is good to see you again John Henry! How have you been?”

“Fantastic, Pac. Melinda and I just got done doing an expedition in the Orient. Those Chinese eat some crazy food. Grilled snake?! It was delicious. What about you?”, I replied.

Vladimir, the other answered, “We are headed to Quebec to ice fish. Very cold up there it is. People have told me this. Should be very fun and relaxing.”

“Flight 450A to Albuquerque is now boarding. Please present passes and identification. Thank you for choosing United, your service is appreciated.”

“Looks like we better head out, John Henry”, Melinda said to me.

“Vlad and Pac, we shall meet again sometime, eh?”, I said.

“Yes that would be enjoyable. Have a nice trip!,” Vlad answered.

“Ready for our trip, J.H.?” Melinda asked me.

“Of course. Always have and will be!”

Now 8 hours later we are walking aimlessly through the desert for something. Melinda had heard a story of a lost city. In this city survived a race of humans unknown to us. Looking the same as us, talking the same as us. I just threw it away as poppycock. Melinda took a serious belief into this “Sandman theory” as I called it. She actually believed that someone could have lived under the noses of us without us even noticing. Completely independent of government and law. It sounded a bit extreme. But here I was, fully in love with Melinda, not wanting to ruin anything by saying, “Hey all that you believe is bullshit. Why should I believe this?” So I went along with her theories and got excited for the trip.

“I think we almost there, John Henry! I’m sooo excited to see this. I’m sure it’s real. Why wouldn’t it be real?”

“Because the human race isn’t complete idiots!” I wanted to say.

“I believe you, Melinda. I’m sure it’s real too.”, I said instead.

“John Henry?”

“Yes, Melinda?”

“What do you think these people will sound like? Will they be ugly or beautiful? Are they any less intelligent? Will they know how to dance? Do they perform music? Are they artistic?”

“They could be. It depends how their brains have matured.”

“What if it’s a super race? More beautiful, stronger, smarter, larger, taller, morally, and socially?”

“They must have done away with greed and destruction.”

“Probably.”

“I’m going to go ahead a bit and scope the land”, Melinda stated.

“Alright. I’ll just keep at regular pace. Don’t let me lose sight of you.”

“Okay”, she said as she pecked me on the cheek.

Ah, Sweet Melinda I liked to call her. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. A specimen so beautiful it puts the hills of Ireland to shame, even on St. Paddy’s Day. To say she was perfect would be an understatement. Her ass, breasts, and legs were ,to say the least, awesome! But the things I loved most about her were the ones only I knew. Her passion for nature, her passion for music, and most of all her passion for life. She would do anything. She would sail the seven seas, she would fly around the world in 79 days just to spite Verne. She would swim to Atlantis if she could. Unfortunately all those are just tales. Fortunately for Melinda, there were other things. Parasailing, Skin-Diving, Bungee jumping. Anything for a thrill. That was my Melinda. It made me proud to know her. She wouldn’t rest until she found something.

Up in the distance, about 30 feet I saw Melinda standing still. This surprised me.

“JOHN HENRY! JOHN HENRY! I’VE FOUND SOMETHING! I’VE FOUND SOMETHING!” Melinda yelled.

I ran up to her.

“What is it?”

“Look”, she said as she pointed straight down.

I was looking into a canyon with at least 60 mile walls. I shuddered with excitement.

“What is it?” I repeated.

“I...I don’t know”, Melinda replied.

I immediately got out my camera. I took snapshot after snapshot.

“Let’s go lower”, I said.

“How?”

“Hmmm....”

We both searched for a way down.

“How could this have been formed?”, I wondered aloud.

Below us was a rock of some sort. This was no ordinary rock though. Carved into the side of the rocks were lines. We were quite aways away so all that it looked like were lines.

“Should we walk around it?”, Melinda asked.

I didn’t even think to look to the sides to see how wide this canyon was.

“No I don’t think so,” I said as I looked to the side, “We might be gone for days. Take a gander.”

“HOLY SHIT!”, she exclaimed.

Along the border of this canyon, you could see for miles and miles.

“I can see for miles and miles,” Melinda exclaimed. “I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles....OH YEAH!!”

“Good old The Who”

“Yessiree-bob!”

“How do we get down?”, I asked again.

“What’s that over there?”, she said as she pointed to a shiny, glimmering object.

“Let’s check it out”

What looked to be about 10 feet away turned out to be another 2 hours.

“Geez that thing is quite the distance away, wouldn’t ya say?,”I rhymed.

“It sure is....How much time do you think we’ve been in this environment?,”she asked.

“Well, it’s four in the morning and the sun hasn’t gone down so I’m lost for ideas on what’s going on, but I’d guess about 10 or 11 hours.”

Ahead of us about 10 feet, really 10 feet this time, was a shiny, glimmering obelisk. It rose up at least 60 feet. I couldn’t see the tip.

“The height is what fooled us Melinda”

“What is that do you think?”

“Looks like an obelisk”

I moved closer to touch it. The moment I touched it, it sucked me in and I was transported into a swirling mass of colors. Falling and falling. I looked up to see if Melinda had followed me in. Sure enough a few feet above me Melinda was swirling and twirling just as fast. All of a sudden, what looked like a bolt of lightning struck. Darkness surrounded me.

I woke up a few hours later strapped to a gurney with Melinda right beside me. I tried to raise my head but was prevented from doing so by a strap. Wires and wires were inserted into me. As I finally acclimated to the surrounding a twinge of pain surfaced throughout my body.

“Where are we Melinda?”

Above me grey lights shown down. The room was white except for a red stripe along the wall. I looked over at Melinda and realized she was still out.

“What am I going to do?” I thought to myself.

“You are going to do absolutely nothing and sit perfectly still”, a voice from a distance growled, “You need to calm down. Your thoughts are racing.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I can read minds, silly.”

“How do you do that?”

“It’s very elementary my son. We use ESP.”

“ESP?”

“Yes you know, that so called psychic power that Miss Cleo uses. Well here’s the truth. She’s a hoax and she doesn’t use ESP, just gimmicks. ESP is a form of communication using no voices, signals, signs, or gestures. It is pure thought.”

“Then what am I thinking right now?”

“Is Melinda alright. Who is this fucker? I’m cold. Am I close enough yet Mr. John Henry?”

“Yes, yes yes.”

“What do you want with me?”

“Absolutely nothing. I just want to run a few tests on you. We haven’t had any “humans” here since 1865. You are our guests. We won’t harm you and we won’t kill you. We use our thought processes to heal and help not hurt and hinder. We are very peaceful. We would not harm a fly.” Chuckles.

“Where am I?”

“You are in room number E3465D. South wing of the Wickenburg Complex.”

“John Henry?” Finally Melinda had woken up.

“Yes Melinda?”

“Where are we?”

“You are in room number E3465D.South wing of the Wickenburg Complex. You were sucked in by our transportation device. A simple obelisk.”, the man replied.

“Wh..?”

“I am Unit 765T. One of the very proud 765 units.”

“How did you know what I was going to ask?”

“ESP my dear.”

“ESP?”

“Geez, are all you “humans” the same? Haven’t you ever heard of ESP? It’s a simple mind function. It would work if all of you humans weren’t so greedy and self-absorbed, ” his voice twinged with soft anger. “To work with ESP you must have complete knowledge of all that is around you.”

“How do you develop this knowledge?”, I asked.

“Simple. You block out greed, vice, sex, love, hate, war, violence. You block out all that you feel and focus your energy on the mind energy coming from the “units” surrounding you. All humans communicate with ESP they just don’t know it. Every time you get a twinge in your stomach because you know somebody is going to do something is ESP. It’s all in understanding. There are some who do know how to use it. There is a group of teenagers in the United States who have formed a unit called “Sobers’ and they use this gift often. They just don’t realize the ultimate impact it could have on society. Imagine a world where nothing is secret and nothing is important except knowledge and bonding with your human brethren.”

“Sounds like a school to me”, I retorted.

“Smart-ass comments are not appreciated Mr. John Henry.”

“So you’re saying that all of the people here have ESP?”

“Yes”

“What other people? You’re the only one I’ve seen.”

“They are sleeping.”

“Where?”

“When I am done completing my tests I will show you. Now open wide and say ahh.”

His hand, holding a wooden stick, moved towards my mouth.

“Now bite down on the stick. Very softly. That’s good.”

His hand retracted and in a moment I was out cold. What happened to Melinda I’m not sure. It didn’t much matter because what seemed like days later I awoke on a couch with no restrictions on my body. I lifted my head. The room I was in was completely white except for red stripes on each wall. The walls were otherwise totally bare. I adjusted myself to stand.

“Melinda?”, I called out.

“Yes John Henry?”, she replied back. I breathed a sigh of relief

“Thank god. After that “ahh..” crap I didn’t know what they might do with you. I’m very suspicious of these characters.”

“These people are perfectly harmless. Didn’t you hear what 765T said?”

“So you two are on a first name basis now?”

“Yes actually we are. He showed me around the city. You have to see it. It’s a utopian society.”

“Well, let’s go.”

“We should eat something first. 765T will be back shortly. You’ve been out for 4 or 5 hours.”

As Melinda cooked eggs and bacon for breakfast, I asked her a few questions.

“Why is it always light out?”

“I’m not sure. Why don’t you wait until 765T gets here?”

“Fine. What’s that blue thing?”

“It’s an egg and the purple is bacon.”

“Interesting. How much longer?”

“5 or so minutes.”

“When is 765T going to be here?”

“I’m right here, John Henry”, 765T answered.

“I’ve got some questions for you” I spoke.

“Yes I know and I’ve got answers. Why don’t we discuss over dinner?”

“Good idea”

We sat down at a four-legged instrument that was used for dining. 765T muttered something about it being a “lolligallo” but I wasn’t sure if he was correct. In our terms we sat at a table. To drink we had red milk and to eat purple bacon and blue eggs. It wasn’t your average meal.

“How were your people formed, 765T?”, Melinda asked.

“The same way you were. Evolution. Blobs to organisms to small animals to monkeys to apes to humans. We don’t call ourselves humans though. We call ourselves Units. All of us are equal in stature.”

Just then another Unit walked into the room. The only difference between the other man and 765T was the amazing hair this gentleman had. It stuck out of his head like a porcupine but it wasn’t strands of hair like you’d expect. His hair was made of hoses. Very small, the size of normal strands of hair.

“Why is his hair so different?” I asked.

“He was born that way. Somehow a hose or a part of a hose was entered into his mother and it somehow got into her genes, and obviously, him.”

“How could a hose become part of a person?”

“All things here have genes. Here in our society, all things are living. That rock over there, for instance, is living and breathing just as we are at this moment. It has no mode of transportation though.”

We finished eating and 765T told us that we would now be taken on a tour of the city.
We walked down a long white hallway with a red striped floor.

“What’s with all the red floors?”, I asked.

“The only color our people can see is red. Therefore we mark our floors with red so that they don’t walk on walls or ceilings.”

“You’re joking, right?” I retorted.

“No, Mr. John Henry, I am not. We here are strange folks. Our traditions are different than yours. However we do imitate you in some ways. We shower in the morning, we eat in the morning, we have schools for education, but we have no law enforcement. People here learn that crime does not pay. You realize that any crime is punishable by life in the box.”

“The box?”

“Yes, the box. It’s a small area placed around the city where bad criminals go forever. No matter the charge. Murder, rape, grand theft auto, jaywalking. All are punishable. Inside the box is nothing but darkness. Pure darkness. You are fed once a day at exactly 1:13.”

“So you weed out the bad and keep the good.”

“In a way that is true. Those bad people are good but they choose to be bad. If they want to make that choice, they will pay for it with the box.”

“Harsh. How have you lived under our noses for so long without being found?” I asked as we entered the city.

“Wow, this place is amazing.” I gasped.

In front of me lay the most beautiful city ever created. Red forests and lush red grass was everywhere. On buildings, the entrances were red. The roads were red. These reds weren’t the color of blood or a horrible annoying red. These reds were the most breathtaking reds I’d ever seen. Simply astonishing.</div>

I Been Tagged

    </a>
<div>Well, I was tagged by Mr. Mike, only because i was interviewing him at the time. Perhaps that was my first mistake. ;-)

RULES - Once you've been tagged, you have to write a blog with 8 facts/things/habits about yourself, saying who tagged you. In the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

1)One of my most notable and annoying habits is my habit of blowing my nose after every meal. It doesn't matter if it's a hamburger, cheeseburger, cereal, steak...if it's going in my mouth, its going to cause me to blow my nose. I get a lot of shit for it from my family but only because they love me.

2)I am a live music addict. I'll go to as many shows as i possibly can, money permitting. my first live show was my freshman year of high school at the united center. i saw the dave matthews band perform. a man named victor wooten came out and played with them. crazily enough, it wasn't until 3 or 4 years later that i realized it.

3)I used to bite my fingernails. that is no longer a problem.

4)i can honestly say that at this very moment i am the most content i have been in a long time...probably since i was a wee tyke with no worries in the world, except avoiding spankings from my parents

5)i went to the university of kansas for a semester. unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your outlook, i had to move back home.

6)soon after that i moved to durango, colorado to live with my friends brian and mvt. some of the best months of my life even though in the end i was broke.

7)ive lived in 5 places in my life...deer park, illinois, chicago, illinois, lawrence, kansas, fort collins, colorado, and urango, colorado.

8)my time is up so the survey must end.

i choose hoopinman, marty, pedro, loie, mary withers and gryphon.</div>

<div>Our favorite mind-bending jazz trio from Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey hits the road hard this February and then jumps the pond to bring their music to Europe. In fact, for our good friends in Europe, you'll be seeing almost the entire HYENA roster appearing there this year. James Blood Ulmer, IsWhat?!, John Ellis and Grayson Capps will all be heading your way. Anyway, back to JFJO. They'll be supporting their incredible new record, The Sameness of Difference, which has got the following folks saying:

"It swings, it sways, but the jazz trio form in their hands has an almost primitive, inside-your-head, idiosyncratic quality to it that suggests the three are truly one." - Downbeat

"On The Sameness of Difference, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey weave the kind of impressionistic, imaginative new jazz that shatters any kind of identity, much less categories and classifications." - Chicago Sun Times

"The Sameness of Difference features JFJO's patented improvisational brilliance on a set divided by remarkable originals and startlingly arranged covers ...With an expanded and insanely broad songbook to choose from, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey has deservedly become one of the most talked about Jazz trios in recent memory." - Cincinnati City Beat

"The Sameness of Difference is a quintessential piece of post-modern jazz which plays tribute to a number of influences and mentors. Pianist Brian Haas, Bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Jason Smart have assembled a fantastic mix of originals and covers, each a seamless voyage..." - Blogcritics.com

<div>http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/2/2/10581/84829
---
I've seen some strange things in my life, but I cannot describe the feeling I had, sitting on the House floor during Tuesday's State of the Union speech, listening to the President assert that his executive power is, basically, absolute, and watching several members of Congress stand up and cheer him on. It was surreal and disrespectful to our system of government and to the oath that as elected officials we have all sworn to uphold. Cheering? Clapping? Applause? All for violating the law?

The President and his administration continue their spin and media blitz in attempts to defend the fact that they broke, and continue to break, the law. Their weak and shifting justifications for doing so continue. The latest from the President seems to be that basically the FISA law, passed in 1978, is out of date. His decision that he can apparently disregard "old law" fits the pattern with the President and his administration. He's decided to disregard a statute (FISA) and the Constitution (the 4th Amendment) by continuing to wiretap Americans' phone calls and emails without the required warrant, while at the same time claiming powers of the presidency that do not exist. (Perhaps he feels the Constitution is too "old," as well.) This administration reacts to any questions about spying on American citizens by saying that those of us who stand up for our rights and freedoms are somehow living in a "pre-September 11th, 2001 world."

In fact, the President is living in a pre-1776 world.

Our Founders lived in dangerous times, and they risked everything for freedom. Patrick Henry said, "Give me liberty or give me death." The President's pre-1776 mentality is hurting America and fracturing the foundation on which our country has stood for 230 years. The President can't just bypass two branches of government, and obey only those laws he wants to obey. Deciding unilaterally which of our freedoms still apply in the fight against terrorism is unacceptable and needs to be stopped immediately.

Many of you saw this week's story in the Washington Post on the exchange Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and I had during his confirmation hearing in January of last year. Mr. Gonzales misled me and the Senate Judiciary Committee under oath about whether the President could spy on Americans without a warrant. (Many of you blogged about it when the story first broke and I thank you for getting the word out.) That exchange is extremely telling about the depths to which this administration will go to grab power. I look forward to a little more honesty from the Attorney General when he testifies about the spying program before the Judiciary Committee on Monday.

I don't have to tell you how important this issue is. It gets to the core of what we as a country are all about. We all agree that we must defeat the terrorists who threaten the safety and security of our families and loved ones. Why does this President feel we must sacrifice our freedoms to fight terrorism? This is a gut check moment for members of Congress. Do we sacrifice our liberty? Do we bow to those who try to use security issues for political gain? Do we stand and applaud when the President places himself above the law? Or, do we say enough?

Stop the power grab, stop the politics, stop breaking the law.

It's time to stand up - not to cheer, but to fight back.</div>

    </a>
										<div>http://www.drugpolicy.org/library/voterguide013106.cfm
---
The core mission of the Drug Policy Alliance Network (DPAN), the nation’s leading drug policy reform organization, is to advance those policies and attitudes that best reduce the harms of both drug abuse and the war on drugs, and to protect the sovereignty of individuals over their minds and bodies.

DPAN’s federal vision includes cost-effective policies to protect public health, public safety, the public purse, federalism, and American values of liberty, equality and justice. Among DPAN's specific Congressional priorities are: removing barriers to substance abuse treatment; eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing; cutting wasteful drug war spending; prohibiting the federal government from undermining state medical marijuana laws; and implementing policies to reduce drug overdoses and the spread of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.

Evaluation of U.S Representatives is based on several nonpartisan criteria. Most important to this survey was how they voted on the following six pieces of legislation:

House Vote 245 – Amendment to HR 2862 on Justice Assistance Grants: increasing funding to the corrupt and troubled Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program (DPAN opposed);

House Vote 255 – Amendment to HR 2862 on Medical Marijuana: prohibiting the DEA from undermining state medical marijuana laws (DPAN supported);

House Vote 264 – Amendment to HR 2862 on Racial Conviction Distribution: requiring local narcotics taskforces that receive federal money to ban racial profiling and report their convictions by race (DPAN supported);

House Vote 329 – Amendment to HR 3057 on the Andean Counterdrug Initiative: cutting funding to the counterproductive Andean Counterdrug Initiative (DPAN supported);

House Vote 344 – Amendment to HR 3058 on the National Youth Anti-Drug Campaign: increasing funding to the failed anti-marijuana media campaign (DPAN opposed); and

House Vote 435 – S 45: Drug Addiction Treatment: lifting the 30-patient limit on group practices for treating people who struggle with addiction to heroin and other opioids through buprenorphine-assisted approaches (DPAN supported).

Other factors were also considered in evaluating members of Congress, including their support for major drug policy reform legislation.

Highlights of the 2006 Drug Policy Reform Congressional Voter Guide:

Perfect Scores: 33 Representatives voted the right way on all six amendments, receiving perfect scores.

Five out of Six: 70 Representatives voted the right way on five of the amendments.

Room for Hope: No Representative voted the wrong way on all six amendments.

One out of Six: 69 Representatives voted the wrong way on five of the amendments.

The Drug Policy Alliance's 2005 "Champion" was Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), the only member to vote the right way on all six of the floor amendments and to cosponsor all four of the major drug policy reform bills
The Drug Policy Alliance Network's 2005 "Heroes" were Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (RCA), and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA).

The Drug Policy Alliance Network's 2005 "Villain" was Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI). </div>
