A Darker World
Conventions are boring (yawn).
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:05 PMWith the Republicans in the White House, Wars, calls for impeachment, Recession and a looming Oil Crisis, It's hard not to think of Tricky Dicky and his Department of Dirty Tricks. Especially since Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld were a part of that group and you know what they say; Leopards seldom change their spots.
Today's theme is Fear, so here is mine.
During the D.N.C. you will have troublemakers planted in your midst. Placed there to start a riot, so that the images on the news will be ones of confrontation and of people carrying signs being beat down by the Police (the talk will be of Anarchists and Terrorists). Thus subverting your right to a peaceful demonstration. Taking away your right to voice support or to try and send a message to the politicians. Democracy is about many voices. Beating people down, that's called something else...
If I were writing the script, here's how it would go down. I'd rather throw a competing event on the other side of town and have all the nice people over there safe and sound. It would be a party where people could get together and celebrate the end of this nightmare and where they could meet and talk and share ideas. I'd like to see the media images of that day be of empty streets and bored riot police standing around doing nothing. That's my idea of a dirty trick. I think that there is absolutely no need to gather in large groups anymore (flash mobs are cool though). But I do like big parties, especially if they are filled with cool people coming from around the globe. There would be video booths and everyone could record a brief statement and they would all get posted online somewhere (YouTube). The numbers would essentially be virtual (less chance of violence and negative imagery) and at the same time you would be literally giving everyone an opportunity to share their voice.
It's a funny image isn't it? A city street completely empty. All these people in riot gear standing around, doing nothing, tapping their boots with their batons. The only sound being that of a can of tear gas somebody has dropped rolling down the middle of the street. While on the other side of town a huge party that's going off, or better yet, multiple huge parties that are going off, lights, music, smiling faces... I guess it would make for a good scene in a movie, but it's not something that you will ever actually see happen.
So there it is, for your amusement, the idle conjectures of a bored mind. Now back to a Nation of Fear, the current threat level is Orange.
