about me
Halleyah has studied Middle Eastern Dance since 1990 and became an assistant instructor in 1991. She began teaching on her own in 1992. Her own instructors have included: Isabel Crunk at Emory University, Rayne Kerrigan who danced professionally with Ouzel's Company in Germany during the 1970's, Agela of Atlanta, and Zhaleh Ferreshta of Augusta. She has taken seminar and workshop classes with many instructors over the years. In October of 2007 she received her General Skills Certificate from Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance.
Halleyah has studied a wide variety of Middle Eastern dances over the years including: Central Asian, Egyptian, Nomadic North Indian, North African, Persian, Turkish and American Tribal Style (ATS). Her areas of specialty are Egyptian and Persian. Her dance training is primarily in Middle Eastern Dance, but she has also studied: Ballroom dance, Flamenco, Folk dance, Line dance, Modern dance, Renaissance dance, and Square dance. She holds a Masters degree in Education, with a Media Specialist, and a BA in Sociology, with a minor in Theatre. All of this colors her teaching style and methodology as well as the way she performs the dance. Halleyah emphasizes the historical and ethnic traditions of the dance form, fusing different styles and ethnic traditions to create a beautiful art form. She believes that this dance form is an amazing tool for women to explore and redefine themselves and enjoys assisting her students in discovering a comfort and pride as they learn this ancient art form. While she enjoys performing, her main area of interest is in teaching others and helping her students to look good! She is currently exploring theatrical dance possibilities with belly dance.

Halleyah :)
I will be hosting a student hafla at the end of January and would love for folks to plan to drop by. There will be some arranged performances, but most of the evening will be an open floor for all of us to enjoy! I'd love for musicians and drummers to drop by.

No alcohol or smoking allowed on site. The entry fee is to bring a munchie to share with others. Simple, huh? See the flyer for more information or drop me a pm!
The troop performed in the Friday evening show at Southern Fusion Festival on August 10th. While the heat was oppressive due to an unfortunate set of circumstances that left the venue with no A/C on one of Atlanta's hottest days, all the performers made it through and the show went on! Sukari was wonderful and really made things run so smoothly - you're the best! Due to the heat, we had to make some last minute costume changes - turbans might have literally put us in the ER that night. I ...

Re: On signing contracts
(in Belly Dance Instructors)
To be honest it gave me pause. However, I asked around and it's standard in my area among studio owners. So I was looking at a similar deal no matter where I tried to rent space. The caveat is that I don't have to wait to tell "my" students. T...

Re: On signing contracts
(in Belly Dance Instructors)
I teach at two seperate studios. One had me sign a contract ( and I rent space from her - I'm not on "staff"). The other did not (here I am on "staff"). It's not at all unusual in my area and I've heard of other studios that require this. The ...

Re: graphic design programs
(in The Biz of Belly Dance)
I use MS Publisher. It was designed to do flyers, 3 fold brochures, etc. BUT - my caveat is that not many people work in this program so if you're needing to send it out electronically, you may run into issues there. However, it does have the a...
