About Magic Carpet
Improvised music on recorders, sarode, and percussion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Magic Carpet is a unique musical fusion of rhythms and melodies from around the globe; Middle Eastern, Indian, Latin, and beyond....traditional melodies played on non-traditional instruments, modern music played on traditional instruments, original compositions discovered in the moment. Acoustic, living music for reflection and discovery. ...Annette and Rachael combine improvisation with traditional and original compositions. Turkish and Greek melodies mingle with Spanish bulerías and Cuban rhythms. Indian ragas and Middle Eastern grooves weave into a rich musical tapestry. Medieval musical forms appear alongside “odd” meter improvisations. Our instruments include medieval recorders, cajón, daf frame drum, and sarode. Sharing a love for music from around the world, our improvisations are inspired by a sense of the present moment and space in which we find ourselves, making each performance unique and alive.

Friday, January 25th Aharon’s birthday! Classical Indian music with Joanna Mack-sitar, Aharon-bansuri (Indian bamboo flute), and David Aue-tabla. 7-9pm at the all new Numi Teahouse in Oakland $5-10
The ZamZama Arts Trio performs a repertoire of traditional North Indian Classical music, or ragas. This performance will feature the sitar, bansuri, and tabla.
Joanna Mack began her study of sitar and Classical North Indian Music in 1997 with Kartik Seshadri at the University of California San Diego. Recognizing Joanna's inherent talent and drive, he recommended her to study in Kolkata under Pandit Deepak Choudhury, a senior disciple of renowned musician Pandit Ravi Shankar of the Maihar Gharana. Joanna studied in Kolkata, under Pandit Choudhury's guidance, through 2005.
Upon returning to the United States, Joanna began teaching sitar, maintaining the standards and traditions of the Maihar Gharana. In addition to teaching, Joanna performs at both public and private functions. She continues her studies under Pandit Choudhury with annual trips to Kolkata.
David Aue is a versatile percussionist focusing on the classical music of Northern India. He has studied traditional tabla with various teachers since 1995 and is presently a disciple of the world renowned Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri. David is currently living, teaching and performing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
While Aharon Wheels Bolsta performs playing the flutes and percussion of Eastern and Western traditions ranging from Turkey to Mali to jazz traps to rhythmic chants of Bali, his primary devotion is to the classical music of North India. For over ten years Aharon Wheels Bolsta has been honored to study with renowned tabla master Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and periodically continues to augment his understanding of Raga by studying under Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan of the Maihar Gharana. He studied bansuri — the Indian bamboo flute — over the last few years and recently became a disciple of Ashoke Mehta in Varanasi, India and has also studied santur with Satish Vyas of Mumbai and Amit Das in Calcutta. He has performed throughout the US and Europe as well as in Indonesia, India, Turkey, and Mali.

So, I was in Varanasi for an entire month! i had booked a train to jaipur
(meeting bus to pushkar) in rajasthan for yesterday the 22nd but i cancelled it 5 hours
before departure. why you ask?
did some fantastic woman sweep me off my feet, you ask? Is some amazing tabla teacher
demanding me to receive a full down-load of the rarest compostions, you are guessing?
no! the reason is that i am recording a CD. $6/hour seems pretty good for fully
professional studio with a musician ...

Greetings all,
after arriving in Delhi on jan. 4th, my parents and I decided to go south on a plane the next day. I guess tix were not available to fly to kerala for reasonable prices so we flew to Bangalore, thinking to take the train to Cochin from there. However, we were then told that allt rains within a few days were full and that the bus-ride was nightmarish and only through the night, thus we would miss the beautiful scenery of the western ghat (mountain range of famous natural b...

wow. so.
March 9:
So this is the city formerly known as Constantinople. It is about 6 am as I write and I have been up since about 4:45am, trying to sleep beside the warm dreaming form of my girlfriend—but the persistent lone dog barking at virtually any movement (first night in a week that this was a problem) combined with the stark and ominous approach, impact, and departure of somekind of monster that must resemble a street cleaning truck (soundtrack: windows shaking, low rumble of ...

Greetings all from Sevare, Mali!
This will be the beginning of somewhat regular updates, now that we have
some of the
more off-road places behind us. Timbuktu was about as far out as we plan
to go,
though the Festival in the desert was actually two hours by 4x4 into the
desert from
timbuktu... imagine a music festival with a decent sound system and two
stages with
nothing but miles of sand dunes all around. the moon was full for the
three days we
were there and i might be in t...

Yes, this poem is one (l) of my favorites. (Allow me to preface this note by saying that to best appreciate what I am about to say you are advised to copy and paste this message to a word document and then change the font to Times.) If you look in the original edition of 95 Poems, you will find several key factors that deepen the meaning of the poem. First is the nature of the poem’s placement at the beginning of the volume and the po...
