In my opinion, the best sushi in LA is at Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo. It's on the southeast corner of Second and Central, inside a little shopping plaza.

My all-time fave sushi place is Chiba Sushi, in North Hollywood. It's a very reasonably priced little hole-in-the-wall-in-a-strip-mall, and every time I go there, it's a divine experience! The atmosphere is nothing special, but if you can sit at the bar when Shig (the owner/head chef) is working his magic, you won't be disappointed. I can't even tell you what it is that makes this place special (maybe Shig's daily expert shopping at the fish market..?), but it is!

Slightly pricey, but the Ballonna Fish Market, on Maxella in the Marina is awesome. I have a friend who flies to New York regularly and will stop and pick some up on the way top the air port she likes it so much. The ahi and jalapeƱo special is to die for.

Sushi Gen is one of the top rated places for Sushi in L.A. so I'll second that nomination.
Katsu-Ya in Studio City is also off the hook www.sushikatsu-ya.com/home.html And you said "great Sushi" so I assume you meant "great Sushi" and not "Awesome place to do Japanese Car Bombs, and get completely wasted" because if you meant that, then check out: www.delve-sushibar.com/ |

OMG! There is so much good sushi in LA, I can't even remember all of the places I've been to and loved.
The one I do remember, though, is Yamashiro. Mr. 23 and I went for Valentine's Day a few years ago and it is a gorgeous place, built around 1920, if I remember correctly, up in the Hollywood hills. The food is delicious, and it is quite romantic, if he's that kind of friend! Have fun wherever you go, and bon appetit! |
