<div>Interesting, as I was just having a conversation yesterday about the effects of music on exercise, the pro's &amp; the con's with a major con being the distraction it provides so that people aren't IN their bodies while they move...and I found this photo intriguing, WHAT is she doing? She's on the cell phone, on an exercise bike, in her exercise clothes, with what looks like newspapers or work papers in front of her and an electronic organizer in her other hand!!! All she needs is a Starbucks latte hanging from a lanyard around her neck and she'd be all set, huh??

Choosing True Connections
Technology As Distraction
We are often lured by the promise of new technologies to make our lives easier and help connect us to others. While they do so in many ways, they also present each of us with opportunities to make new choices about how we spend our time and invest our energy. Most gadgets are generally meant to improve the quality of our lives, but it is when we spend too much time with them that they actually do the opposite. By always using our portable emailers, cell phones, video games, and surfing the Internet, we actually become less connected and more distracted. By becoming aware of these tendencies, we harness the power to overcome them and make better choices for ourselves and our families.

Once we decide to consciously put our gadgets to work for us, we become masters of our time. We can give our full attention to whatever we are doing and not let phone conversations and other distractions take the place of human contact. Each of us has the ability to consciously choose to be more present in our lives. We can decide at any time to leave our gadgets behind and become aware of the sights and sounds around us in order to expand our awareness and be fully present in our bodies and our surroundings.

When we use our discernment about how we invest our personal energy, we can be sure that we choose only the best for ourselves and those we love. Our gadgets can be useful tools for our journey in the material world, but we must not forget that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and that means interacting with people on a personal level. Choices that enliven us and help us feel connected to our world and our loved ones always deserve our full attention and presence of mind, body, and spirit.

"I hope that you will take the time to read this essay I’ve attached. I found it to be brilliant, awesome, touching, inspiring…true, unfortunately and fortunately. I think that Judith Gayle is one of the more incredible thinkers and writers of our day, and this is an especially good specimen of her work.

Here is a quote that reached out and grabbed me:

'One of the great epiphanies of my life was that moment when I completely understood that anything -- anything at all -- that was NOT loving was, in fact, a form of violence.'

Yes, I have also had that epiphany…but then, sometimes, I forget…and need to be reminded…and thankfully I always am.

I hope that you find this inspiring…or at the least, a confirmation of the path you are already walking.

Moving in peace,

 <div>Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
This year is building toward something unusual, something daring and most of all a sequence of events you would never have expected. Others may be taking their sweet time to openly acknowledge the innovative role you play in their lives, most likely because they are caught up in analysis rather than feeling or inspiration. Not everyone can be a Pisces, but you can trust one thing: the delays that others seem to be insisting on will not be perpetual. The stars and planets are, as we speak, calling on everything and everyone to wake up to reality, whether they think they want to or not. Many times the past several seasons you have felt you were looking directly at a wall, or grappling someone's monolithic idea about life. Keep your faith and remember your personal healing process. The rest will come.

Kill yourself in Vegas
How to visit a land of astounding waste, and not die
By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist

Friday, July 25, 2008

It is, of course, all a matter of scale. Perspective. Of allowing yourself and your sensibilities to be hammered to a bloody pulp by the hard fist of gluttonous reality, just for fun, and see if you can walk away with a shrug and a smile and without feeling like running off to the woods with a case of absinthe and a copy of "Sailing to Byzantium," never to return.

See, you might think you're helping, doing what you can, assisting the healing of the world in tiny but essential ways. You cut down on your garbage and buy CFLs and respond appropriately to the giant pollutive scam that is bottled water, you recycle and buy local and eat organic and maybe even compost, watch your mileage, choose carefully, tread lightly, vote accordingly, use a nice little reusable canvas shopping bag at Trader Joe's. Sweet.

And then, well, it all just explodes. Reality — or rather, a certain nasty aspect of it — spits on your shoes and flips you off and lumbers away like a fat bully after stomping all over your cool sand castle at the beach. I love it when that happens. I hate it when that happens. Ain't it just the way?

Sure enough, I hit the fabulous Las Vegas Strip recently and lo, it was a sharp and wonderful lesson, a reminder, a slap in the heart of all you think might be changing, shifting, improving.

I've been to Vegas plenty of times but it's always an astounding thing, the scale, the overkill, the energy usage, the sheer impudence of the place, excessive waste like a mantra, fresh water sucked into the void of the scalding desert, air conditioning blasting 365 days a year and gargantuan oversized everything as a million European and Asian tourists are currently flocking to the place to indulge in distinctly American fantasies of greed and consumption, all thanks to our pathetically weak dollar and wicked extant ethos of more more more.

I love Vegas. For about 36 hours. Then I want to curl up and die.

But maybe that's just me. Because in such places I often get a bit disoriented, a bit blown away by scale, cannot help but stare at those massive theme-park hotels and widen out my mental lens and visualize the incredible quantities of resources being used every second to keep them alive and churning, all the water and energy and food, all the chemicals and cloth and concrete, the miles of cabling and electricity and the garbage and, oh yes, the sewage, the rivers of human detritus flowing from these 4,000-room monstrosities like giant faucets of refuse that never shut off.

All hotels are marvels. Vegas hotels are marvels in a particularly spectacular, demonic sort of way. I can barely get my mind around them.

(I think my favorite tell-tale example that the world is still teetering on the brink has to be the millions of mini water bottles a place like Vegas swims in like confetti, those tiny ridiculous six-ouncers of filtered tap the size of a baby's sippy cup which you can suck down in about two large gulps and then enjoy the idea that the toxic bottle it came in will still be floating out there in the Pacific Garbage Patch when your great-great-great-grandkids have their children in the space station on the moon).

But Vegas is merely a fabulous, high-relief example. All teeming cities are equal parts wonderland and wasteland, all urban centers potential stabs to your heart, reminding you how easy it is to be overwhelmed and discouraged by the never-ending burn of life.

For me, it's often a lesson in balance, in ebb and flow, in the collapsing of opposites. After all, no matter what you do in your day, no matter how devoutly you practice your little exercises in conscious living, there are a million Vegases and Abu Dhabis, Bangkoks and Beijings, Calcuttas and NYCs and Mexico Cities to counter it, incalculable examples of humanity's depressing profligacy to bury your swell little gestures in an avalanche of screw you.

Reminds me of an amazing anecdote I heard awhile back at a yoga-related salon dinner I attended, told to me by a genius acquaintance of mine by the name of Chris Wallis, a wise young spiritual teacher who's currently doing his doctoral research in Tantric Shaivism over at Berkeley.

(Warning: if you are easily nauseated, eating breakfast, if you have a weak stomach for ancient ritualistic weirdness, please skip right over the next two paragraphs. Trust me).

Chris told me of an incredible ritual practiced by a certain remote, ancient, now-defunct sect of Tantric Hinduism, a final test endured by the advanced practitioner to see if s/he was truly ready, truly able to remain free of the various bindings and shackles and ego gyrations of this messy and wondrous life.

As I recall, the test was quite simple in its powerful disgustingness: Into a fine goblet was mixed equal parts human urine, feces, blood, saliva, vomit. Shaken, stirred, handed to the practitioner with (I imagine) a nice little bow and a humble smile.

You know what happens next. Could the practitioner swallow down the contents without flinching, without reacting in any way? Could the attuned one, in other words, take into his or her being the worst and nastiest aspects of the world, the most vile substances and ideas and energies we know, and remain clear and awake and (most importantly) completely present? If so, true consciousness was achieved. If not, well, back to the meditation chamber for you.

It was not, as you might imagine, merely a test of physical fortitude. Nor was it a test of mental numbness and tuning out and jumping away from your body so none of the grossness affects you. Quite the opposite, actually.

It's a (touchingly literal) example of the idea that all matter, no matter how disgusting, joyful, vile or beautiful, is merely energy, that everything emanates from and returns to the same divine source, that all dualities of good/bad disgusting/delicious love/hate collapse together into the same moment. There is no difference. Grossness is merely a perception. Joy is merely an illusive state. Where they collapse into one, there lies the truth. Or maybe just a bottle of aspirin and hundred Alka-Seltzers and a stomach pump.

You get the idea? Somehow, some way, you gotta take it all in, sit right in the center of it, conscious of all but attached to none, and be OK. It's all just energy. It's all the same divine breath of god, blowing in your ear, whispering sweet everythings. Collapse it all together. Shake, stir, swallow it down with a bow and a humble smile. Tasty, no?

<div>July 10, 2008
Unconscious Communication
Chronic Lateness
Being late for an appointment or a date can seem like a small thing that really doesn’t matter, but it communicates volumes, whether we mean it to or not. Being kept waiting is an experience that almost no one enjoys, because at best, it wastes their time, and at worst, it indicates a lack of regard. It’s as if we’re saying that our time is more important than their time, so we don’t need to honor them by showing up when we said we would. When we are running late, it means a lot if we call and let the person know, especially if it’s going to be more than ten minutes. However, if we are chronically late, it may take more than a phone call to properly address the issue.

If it’s become a habit of ours not to be on time, we may want to look inside ourselves and see what’s going on. It’s easy enough to make excuses about our behavior, or to project responsibility on the other person, perceiving them to be uptight if they are irritated by our tardiness. What’s more difficult, and more meaningful, is looking at ourselves and asking why it is that we always, or often, show up late. Sometimes this happens out of a lack of self-regard, as if we aren’t really important anyway, so why will anyone care if we’re late, or don’t show up at all. Chronic lateness can also stem from being disorganized, or simply trying to do too much in one day. Another possible reason for being late to a particular appointment, or date, is that we don’t really want to be there. We communicate our disinterest or boredom by not showing up on time.

Whatever our reasons, if we raise them to the conscious level, we have an opportunity to live a more conscious life. As we begin to understand the deeper reasons behind our inability to show up on time, we have the option to communicate clearly and consciously about how we really feel, rather than communicating unconsciously by being late.

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

<div>
The Pope and George Bush are on the same stage in front of a huge crowd.

'The President' and His Holiness, however, have seen it all before, so to make it a little more interesting, the President says to the Pope,

'Did you know that with just one little wave of my hand I can make every Republican in the crowd go wild?'

Pope doubts it, so he shows him. Sure enough, the wave elicits rapture and cheering from every Republican in the crowd. Gradually, the cheering subsides.

The Pope, not wanting to be outdone by such a level of arrogance, considers what he could do.

'That was impressive. But did you know that with just one little wave of MY hand I can make EVERY person in the crowd go crazy with joy? This joy will not be a momentary display like that of your subjects, but will go deep into their hearts, and they will forever speak of this day and rejoice.'

The President seriously doubts this, and says so. 'One little wave of your hand and all people will rejoice forever? Show me.'

So the Pope slapped the shit out of him.

1. Grab the nearest book

2. Open the book to page 28

3. Find the 3rd sentence

4. Post the text of the next three sentences in your blog (and as a comment on mine) along with these instructions. Do not look for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST book.

"She is now a beautiful, vibrant child. When they look upon her, her parents still recall those seven long months of faith and courage.
The truth is, we are all so very, very vulnerable."

-From Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates and Katrina Kenison (the only book in my office that I read on a daily basis---keeps me sane)

5. Tag 5 other people to do the same.

I'm tagging Timefire Rex, Phoenni, Guy, False Coconut and Grady...but I'd love to hear from any of you!!</div>

<div>I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud
William Wordsworth

I WANDERED lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

remember, to stop and smell the flowers today...D</div>

<div>
By Scott Kalechstein

DO GRATITUDE, contentment, and inner peace sometimes creep up on you and undermine your ability to indulge your anxiety?

Here's a quick and handy two-step process to make sure you get your M.D.R. (minimum daily requirements) of worry and chaos:

1. Believe and act like your safety, security, and happiness are dependent on people and forces outside of you that you can't control.
2. Try to control them.

For those of you who prefer to keep it complex, here are seven habits to develop that will help you go deeper into your practice and guarantee a daily overdose of adrenaline. Allow me to be your drama director as we shout out the traditional opening words..."Lights! Camera!! RE-ACTION!!!"

Courtesy of israelforum.
1. Harness The Power Of Negative Thinking -- Everybody accentuates the negative on occasion. What if I can't pay my bills? What if I lose my house? What if I get sick? What if I'm alone for life? What if I'm in this relationship for life? But as your drama coach, I want to inspire you to master 'The Secret' by focusing all of your attention on the most negative possible outcomes all of the time. When this discipline has been achieved, you can relax into the certainty that you will always find something to freak out about in any situation, and fear will never abandon you again.

2. Be Busy Till You're Dizzy -- Being too busy to still your mind and take good care of your body is essential on this path to drama-realization. With temptation all around us these days -- health food stores, spas, gyms, yoga studios, and meditation classes, it takes courage to maintain abstinence while everyone is stretching, sweating, chanting, and going organic. Remember, as our parents tried to warn us, engaging in meditation can lead to blindness, losing sight of all the things right in front of you to worry about. So wake up every morning painfully early, splash cold water on your face, brew up your caffeine, and go, speed racer, go! Have you answered all your emails? Who needs a shoulder to lean on? Is there something on TV? Always make sure your life and your mind are filled with clutter and free of those annoying empty spaces between your thoughts that can disturb your absence of peace.

3. Have A Swinging Good Time -- Drama majors are often found swinging like a pendulum from one extreme to another, churning with the thrill of constant crises, skillfully sidestepping the monotony and boredom of emotional stability. Would you like to be able to create, at the snap your fingers, a soap opera drenched in drama, anytime you want? All you need to do is to stuff your feelings till you can't hold them in any longer, and then explode without restraint or care for anyone, especially the ones you care most about. As a practice, try being 100% nice and sweet. Stretch yourself to accommodate someone as much and as long as you can, and then take the lid off and let the steam out, like Mt. Saint Helens does once in a while. There is nothing as satisfying as having a good eruption after being good and silent for a spell.

4. Leave Your Inner Child Alone Without Parental Guidance -- When the child inside the adult gets scared, some really juicy drama can happen, but only if we withhold our compassion, re-assurance, and loving boundaries. When we can resist such mushy self-help nonsense, our inner children usually wreak havoc trying to get those things from others, usually through some very exciting acting out in the drama department. When two or more people abandon their little kids at the same time, oh boy, that's when the fun begins. The adults have left the vehicle, and you can guess who's in the front seat, banging on the horn, flooding the accelerator, yelling out the window, and playing extreme bumper cars. Yippee!

5. Set Huge Goals, Maintain Unrealistic Expectations -- There is nothing more beneficial to your lifestyle than the habit of reaching for the stars, falling short of your lofty goals, and feeling like a colossal failure. Taking big leaps and falling flat on your face is paramount for maintaining healthy low self-esteem, which is the foundation of all good drama. Go for the mountaintop, and don't look down at your feet on your way. One step at a time is for people satisfied with proceeding at a snail's pace, always leaving behind their slime trail of serenity, gentleness, balance, and other dismal downers that drama kings and queens take royal pains to avoid. You can do better than that!

6. Judge Your Judgments -- Every human being judges, but only the ones who have learned the art of judging their own judgments excel in creating melodrama. Have you ever been known to shame and blame yourself for feeling afraid and stuck, telling yourself that there is something really wrong with you for not moving forward? Good! You are on the right track. Now, take your next step. Judge your judgments! Tell yourself that you should know better than to shame and blame yourself. Heap truckloads of guilt on yourself for stooping so low to the curb of self-criticism, yet again. This will make you quite an energetic downer that can't help but suck energy from those around you. You'll be the lifelessness of the party!

7. Get Grounded In The 3 B's (Blame, Blame, &amp; Blame) -- Blaming yourself has already been covered. But don't rest there. Blame everyone else too. Life's not going the way you want? Blame, blame, blame! Blame first, ask questions and take responsibility later, if at all. Appropriate targets are Mom and Dad, friends (if you still have any), your mate (if they are still around), the Bush administration, the Clinton administration, big corporations, small minds, and, of course, God. Self-responsibility can lead to issues finding solutions, which flushes good drama right down the drain. Instead, let it overflow, uncontained, uncensored, unedited. Blame, Blame, Blame!

Affirmations For Good Drama

Every day in every way I am stressing out over everything, real or imagined.

Everything is working together to conspire to bring the worst possible outcome to my doorstep.

Life is against me and I am doomed.

This, or something worse, is now manifesting for the highest cost to all concerned.

I no longer have to work to create drama. Drama happens effortlessly and naturally, all around me.

Whatever calamity I can conceive, I can achieve.

I always have everything I need to manifest everything I don't want, and all is hell in my world.

I used to want the words "She tried." on
my tombstone. Now I want "She did it."

If you dance, you dance because you
have to. Every dancer hurts, you know.

Go within every day and find the inner strength so
that the world will not blow your candle out.

The best career advice given to the young is:
"Find out what you like doing best and
get someone to pay you for doing it."

I always believed that if you set out to
be successful, then you already were.

I wasn't concerned about the hardships, because
I always felt I was doing what I had to do, what
I wanted to do and what I was destined to do.

We weren't pushing Black is
beautiful. We just showed it.
