My Testimonials

Not to be too gender specific I miss her so much I wanna cry.
November 11, 2005
I had stated this on Canadian Tribal, but I wanted to repeat it for more than just that austere group to see.

Alexis has been my muse in Tribal belly dance.

Her skill and willingness to share has inspired me to new heights ("C'mon, let's dance at the Royal Ontario Museum!"), to try some new things ("Why do I need hair falls? I already have long hair!"), and has led me to a few new experiences in life that I might not otherwise have. (Yeah, YOU try dancing in tribal garb at The Barn and tell me that ain't a singular experience!)

And, y'know if it were just the tribal dance, I wouldn't bother writing this, but there is a kindness that Alexis and her husband Mike give, that we all should be fortunate enough to share in and give off ourselves.

Toronto's loss is Alabama's big gain.

Signed
A Friend.

Yeah, we're past the tipping point alright. Schiese. I just really hope I'm on high ground when the oceans rise. And that Remy and M are with me. Please, just let them be with me. That's all I ask.

* This post brought to you by the exceptionally cynical environmentalist in me, who has pretty much already bought the idea that we're doomed.

Oh, I could go on and on about how annoying it was to have a massage therapist talking during my massage this morning, but the reality is that despite her inane and racist (!) chatter, she was actually good at working the kinks out of my back. So, that is a good thing. Still, the chatter (especially the racist bit*, which REALLY offended me) was enough to keep me from seeing that therapist again.

But, having the kinks out of my back is really great! Between the being a mom thing, my poor posture and bronchitis, my back has been aching. And now it does not. YAY!

The bronchitis is going away... now just the cough, phlegm and the asthma linger. And the phlegm is thinning out.

*Before Remy wakes up: what she said was completely inane: she was describing her neighbors who she called the landlord on, because their music was too loud. And she said specifically, "They were black. It's not like here. Black people in Mississippi hate white people." Something like that. But a little worse. UGH.

OK, he's waking up.

Ok, I had a random conniption fit the other day when I saw the workshop list for Tribal Fest 8 (which - haha, irony or fate, you be the judge - I can't attend this year, yet again, because we're going to be in France of all places! This is starting to get as amusing as my never having seen the statue of liberty -- I've been to NYC 3 or 4 times, I forget, and still haven't seen it! And we drove over the Brookyn Bridge. At least once. If not twice.).

Anyway, back to my mini conniption fit. I originally saw the name of a dancer who I thought I knew* and thought to myself, "WTF, she's just another RB clone, how could she get a spot teaching a workshop at TF?" This led me to immediately start wondering what the process is like, for if she could teach at TF, I could certainly do so as well**.

So. There was that. Of course, I'd have to start teaching again, period, to be able to teach at TF. But I actually had an idea for a workshop, so that's kinda fun.

And then this afternoon, I decided to google this dancer (I had thought she spelled her name a little differently, so I was confuzzled). And lo and behold -- different dancer entirely. :face to palm

Upon further thinking, it really isn't that the dancer I was originally thinking was teaching is all that bad (she is not, by any stretch of the imagination -- she's great). But it was  that a) she wasn't teaching in her area, at  least not last year, and I hadn't heard she was doing workshops, and b) really, the issue I would have is what could she bring that was new to the table, you know?

But that is a whole 'nother rant... and one that has been hashed to death in many places already.

_____

* For the record, I have at least 3, maybe 4 TF teachers on my FL, depending on who's reading me at this point. None of ya'll inspired that kind of conniption fit, since I know how incredibly hard you work, and none of ya'll are clones, either!)

** Yeah, I probably could, given a few years getting my dance shit together. I have mixed feelings about it... on the one hand, the dance is amazing and my soul longs to teach and inspire people the way I am inspired. On the other hand, I like my free time and I love being a mama and a wife. And it is hard enough to balance all of that as it is. So, not putting the cart before the horse is important. I need to start small, start teaching workshops in this area. And then see where  I can go from there. I have the contacts in place to be able to do some big time shit, or at least get it started. But first, I need to see where I am with this, right now.

Oh yes, my birthday was a veritable bonaza of booty.... from the Hot Topic pants of cool ("Cool" said M when he saw them the first time. "Oh, those are cool pants" he said when I put the purple ones on yesterday. Mike's fashion seal of approval? Priceless!) to the splendiferous amazon.com gift certificate I got from my FIL/ step-MIL. Oh, happy happy joy joy. I have a ton of new books/ DVDs and one CD coming my way!!! YAY!!! (I love that I can buy a used book through amazon.com -- yes, I have to pay shipping. But 99 cents +$3.99 shipping for a Guy Gavriel Kay book = way more bang for my gift certificate buck. Plus, used is awesome!)

Also, we bought PotC: at World's End last night after birthday sushi. On sale 2 DVD edition = w00t!

I still feel cruddy, but definitely improving daily. Ugh. I hate being sick. The cough is actually getting worse, but only because my phlegm is clearing up, which makes the dry coughs that much more annoying/ hard on my lungs. I am definitely trying to stay hydrated and have instituted a "drink crappy tasting herbal tea" routine... YUCK. Horehound tastes like puke, that's all I'm gonna say. Metalic puke. (The rest of my mixture is: mullein, which is fine also on its own, I have noticed, eucalyptus, elderberry and astralagas.)

Remy is definitely better, his naps have reverted to "normal."

Oh, G-d. How could I have forgotten? Remy got the COOLEST play kitchen for hanukkah from his grandma S. OMG. So cool! He loves it, too! (I knew he would, that was why it was on the list). Needed water in the sink STAT. Began stacking and restacking containers in the cupboard. Oh. It is so cool! And wooden -- unpainted -- and made in Maine! So awesome!

He played with it for a l o n g time this afternoon...!

After seeing a picture of my yarn falls in action*, I have decided that ones I have sitting around waiting to be sold need new homes. I want to see them in action!!!!!

I am feeling generous, too. So -- here's an offer to all my peeps: I will send you yarn falls in return for an exchange of some kind.

This is first-come, first served. I will match up the yarn falls that I already have (which are mostly the short length) with people. If you're super-nice and have something very specific ... read more

Wow, us people are such curious messes, eh? I have my issues (I hate being told what to do, I probably read into other people's perceptions of me too much, once I know they have some little issue with me.)

I am naive, too. I'd thought the drama of last winter was over. We all took a step back, shifted focus, agreed to disagree, so to speak. But it cropped up again.

Part of me thinks jealousy is a bitch. Part of me thinks I'm just awfully naive and dumb, to have thought I had the "righ... read more

I just figured out how to link to my LJ in here (I think). Is it working? Do I get emailed comments? I hope I shall find out soon.

Meanwhile, I'm getting ready to go to New Jersey tomorrow for the funeral (M's uncle died this weekend). It's awful, but I am really bummed that I can't wear my Melodia's... because it wouldn't be "appropriate." Not much of my (colorful, funky, fun) clothing is. M's family is normally conservative, and even more so when someone's died. (Naturally).

So, I j... read more
