Where do I begin? I will have to conjure up the last few weeks when they seem now as if they happened months ago! Peter & I spent a week in Serbia in search of you guessed it- Brass bands! We hit the towns of Belgrade, Surdulica & Vranska Banje. The latter was my favorite. It was a small village nestled in a green valley at the end of which were natural hot springs. I now have an even more special place in my heart for Brass! We then took an excruciatingly slow overnight train fom Serbia through Bulgaria to Istanbul. I was only able to stay in Istanbul for three nights before I had to catch my plane to Dushanbe, Tajikistan. But they were wonderful.....filled with evenings strolling across the Galata Bridge and around Taksim listening for live music, savoring fresh fish sandwhiches from the street vendors, playing Bagammon (I even won a couple games from Peter!) and drinking far too much tea. And before I knew it it was time to catch my flight to Tajikistan! And that will have to be another entry, very soon I promise. I miss you all very much!!! with love, aliah

Two weeks left until I fly away ! I have no idea what to expect traveling in the Balkans, but I am excited to be completely out of my element! Via Istanbul I will fly to Tajikistan and begin traditional dance and related arts research in the Pamir mountain & valley regions of Gorno-Badakshan. I hope to return for at least one week in September before packing up again to start my studies at the University of London, School of Oriental & African Studies for a year !
