Inspirational Musings

"The contemplation of beauty causes the soul to grow wings” PLATO
-------------------

My soul glowed from the fire of your fire
Your world was a whispering water
At the river of my heart...........Rumi
-------------------
"Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." Rumi
-------------------
Outside ideas of right doing
And wrong doing,
There is a field.
I'll meet you there. ................Rumi

-------------------
Love comes with a knife, not some shy question. And not with fears for its reputation! Love is a madman working his wild schemes, tearing off his clothes, running through the mountains, drinking poison and quietly choosing annihilation.
You've been walking the ocean's edge, holding up your robes to keep them dry. You must dive naked under, and deeper under, a thousand times deeper and deeper under. Love flows down, love flows down. The ground submits to the sky and suffers what comes down, love flows. Tell me, is the earth worse for giving in like that?
Don't put blankets over the drum. Open completely When you lay your lips on me
and breath, I begin to chime.

I provide guidance to the next step of personal artistic development. In a typical class, you would be invited to bring your materials and the image or project you are working on. There is an average of 2 to 4 students who are working in different mediums, styles and are at different levels, from beginners to advanced.

~~~Student Quote: "Alicia’s classes are most delightful...her arts space is peaceful and filled with beautiful art and light. Alicia is great at guiding everyone in the class, no matter what medium or style they use. She is always most supportive, having a professional “eye” and gentle manner. Alicia has helped me tremendously to improve my painting (step by step) and has definitely encouraged me to find my own individual “style”. She is experienced to help both novices and advanced artists." Jenni Allard
This is another perspective on Emptiness..... I found it interesting......enjoy! -A-
What makes a piece of art spectacular? Most people would say that first and foremost it is the feelings the image evoke. Secondly, it is the technique and execution which demonstrate the creator’s mastery. I would like to propose that we add into this evaluation of greatness the expert use of white space as that is the foundation of every masterpiece in any genre, particularly the art of life.
White space is what defines all that happens over the course of life. It is the blank space in between images and events that make it possible to gain perspective on our lives. It is the inhale and exhale before a response. The two second pause that makes the difference between a default reaction and an intentional act. That space between events that defines the impact of activities. Those eternal blissful seconds after an orgasm when your mind is not in charge of your reality.
To me, white space is an essential element of life that often is overlooked. It is a healthy part of any relationship. I love the song title, “‘How can I miss you if you won’t go away?” (Dan Hicks) as it rings very true particularly in situations of continual intense exposure to others or a project. That’s why it is important and often inspirational to create some intentional white space in your life. Take day off from work every once in awhile while not sacrificing a decent vacation, spend a few days away from a partner, or to get a babysitter and have time as a vivacious adult.
Actually your being requires it and will make sure you get that white space whether you think you need it or not. Often unintentional white space comes in the form of being sick and being forced to take a down day. You can save yourself a lot of discomfort and disease if you figure out how often you need to infuse white space into your schedule and enjoy it rather than endure it.
You are the creator of this masterpiece called your life. Are you intentionally using your white space for emphasis and inspiration?
I have been in a place of transition this past month. There has to be so much focused energy for a solo show that when the energy of it all peaks (which in this case was my opening reception) there has to be some sort of adjustment……inner and outer.
My experience this time was with emptiness. After the first two weeks of adrenalin crash…….I felt empty. Most of the time I try to fill that emptiness but in the spirit of the place between duality that I had just contemplated in my work …….I did the opposite……I honored the emptiness by empting more. I have been cleaning, organizing, and getting rid “Stuff” for the past two weeks…….I think I got rid of at least 20 trash bags of things that we do not want or need. I recycled as much as possible…..and the space/house is feeling so much better. I don’t normally feel comfortable with inner emptiness….but I kept reminding myself that it is the space before the NEW….a pause…that I do not need to fill it…..to control it…..but to wait…….and let the Universe fill it with what is divinely best for me……I took down all my altars in my studio as well….and have started them fresh also leaving space for the good that will come to me …the gifts that nature will give me from my daily walks along the old dirt roads around my home. I bought paint last week for the floors in my studio and office room…….(dark bright blue for studio and burnt orange for the floor in the office room) Today I spent the day prepping and painting the studio……..what a difference a new coat of paint can make!........I am no longer feeling empty although the New has not arrived yet ….I feel it coming and I feel excited for all it will bring……………..I welcome the new people, places, inspirations, experiences, and successes that are arriving in my life and I say goodbye to all that does not serve my highest good now~ Blessings to All ~ Alicia
Went to Hampden Gallery today to help pack my work to be delivered back to the studio.
Then was off to deliver a few pieces to Gallery in the Woods for the May Gallery Walk this Friday. ~ but things worked out differently than planned~
A whirlwind of a day where everything worked out perfectly!........Hampden Gallery generously drove my work to Gallery in the Woods, who then loved my work enough to take 9 paintings instead of 3! Went out for lunch ........then home.....unpacked the remaining work which I had room to store in my new verticle shelf canvas storage that was built for me last week.........
ahhhh life is good today!!!!
Tomorrow I am off the Amherst Gallery walk........then Brattleboro Gallery walk on Friday.......where I can see my work hung in its new Gallery space...............
This is one of the pieces that could be seen .........
Diverse media, concepts make for interesting exhibit
Sophia Pastore, Collegian Correspondent
Issue date: 4/24/08 Section: Arts & Living
Art should be insightful and thought provoking. If it isn't, then it should at least be beautiful. The work currently being housed in Southwest's Hampden Gallery is the rare combination of all three.
Laura "Lola" Baltzell describes herself on her Web site as "a self-taught painter, yoga teacher and bilingual clinical social worker, living and working in the Boston area." She labels her work "primitive pop," a name derived from her lack of classical training and use of color.
Her recent collection, "Bright Promises," can be viewed inside the Incubator Project Space at the Hampden Gallery. All of the pieces are mixed-media collages inspired by her childhood in small-town Iowa and the time she spent in the rural town of Leyden, Mass., near the Vermont border.
Each collage demands close inspection and a keen eye. Glimpses of maps, sheet music, pages from the Bible, and sewing patterns can be seen amid cutouts of flowers, original drawings and meandering streaks of paint.
The layering effect of her work pulls the viewer into what seems to be a sweet nostalgic time warp, full of old postcards and pages torn from books. Baltzell, in her artist's statement, describes these pieces as a representation of "the way my parents and the larger culture attempted to raise a generation with the expectation of a predictable, safe future."
Another artist showcased is Alicia Adams Hunsicker, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, who "strive(s) to create a visual language that evokes deep feelings of the divine feminine/masculine and the spirit of the natural world," according to her Web site. She is an accomplished artist and photographer who boasts an extensive resume as well as the largest current exhibit in the Hampden Gallery.
Hunsicker's collection, titled "Between the Darkness and the Light" is a series of paintings that contain a reoccurring theme of imagery - eggs, nests, human bones and fleeting images of the female form. The work is done mostly in soft shades of blue, brown, yellow and white.
The ethereal nature of the pieces hint at fertility and a union between humanity and the Earth. A physical manifestation of the paintings stands in the middle of the room; branches suspended from the ceiling and strings holding an egg over an abstract nest formation. Little nests full of eggs sit in corners of the room and ledges on the wall.
"I have been inspired by the powerful aesthetic and creative whimsy of indigenous artisans around the world for many decades," says Deborah Garner, another artist on display, on her Web site. She is not only an artist, but has also worked "as a collector and dealer of tribal and folk art for over 30 years," the site says.
Garner's "Astral Journeys, Inner Worlds" is a display of what she calls "postcards form the Edge of Consciousness." She describes herself in her artist's statement as "a dreamer by nature and disposition" and seeks to express the nature of her dreams through her art.
The result of this exploration is haunting and whimsical. Images of women shrouded and huddling under trees are paired with blurred figures of people swimming through dreamy, unfixed landscapes of mono-print art. References to India are clear - pictures of snake charmers and parades of cows are mixed with other media to form surreal images of red skies and shifting landscapes.
The work of these women, though staggeringly different, is all worth seeing. The art itself can be purchased, but for a price that far exceeds the means of the average college student.
The three exhibits will remain in the Hampden Gallery until Tuesday, April 29. Hours are Monday through Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
I start my day with a cup of coffee and a daily quote from Abraham ............
<dailyquote@abraham-hicks.com>
Is it possible to be the visionary and the actionary of your own life? Not only possible, it's the way most of you intended it to be. It's the best of all worlds. What can be more exhilarating than to find a dream from the contrast, to fixate on the dream and let it give you pleasure as it grows, and then to watch Law of Attraction bring it into manifestation while you help with your action? Does it get any better than that? You didn't think so as you made the decision to come forth into these physical bodies. You said, "This is the best time in all eternity for a Creator to Create."
“Between The Darkness and The Light”
Hampden Gallery, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
April 4 – 29, 2008
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This work is about finding balance,
the swinging pendulum between dualities and
the integration of the shadow and the light within.

There is a place or even a way of being;
a middle way where the pendulum is centered.
A place where dualities integrate and balance
is achieved. The Grey place of non-duality.
I imagine this is a place of stillness and contentment
where the needing to know the answer stops,
where you are in the present in the here and now,
and where you can climb up the string
to achieve a higher perspective.
~ Alicia Hunsicker 2008

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides;
all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in
everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the
measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.
“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything
has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same;
opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree;
extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths;
all paradoxes may be reconciled.”
~The Kybalion.
