HOLY CRAP!
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 12:54 PMFundamental brain wiring can change, even in adults!
THIS IS HUGE and completely at odds with the nihilistic and commonly held belief that whatever the roots are of a person's traits, by adulthood, they are as hard-wired as a computer's motherboard. We've known for a while that the brain is not localized, meaning that the functions of a certain part of one's brain can be damaged and another, seemingly unrelated, section will take on the function of the damaged part...but THIS discovery is all types of different.
Basically, the belief is that our brian circuitry is affected by stimulus. Whether we recieve unconditional love or feel protected and safe when our brains are developing, shape the circuitry that then shapes character traits (altruism, selfishness, tolerance, xenophobia, openness, defensiveness, even extremes like obsessive compulsive disorders). So...this implies that the brain remains a 'work in progress' and that most people, (there will always be exceptions) are capable or "fixing" our childhood or life "damage". I quote, "These discoveries change everything about how we should think of ourselves, who we are and how we get to be that way. We now know that the qualities that define us at one moment in time come from experiences that shape the physical and functional brain, and [they] continue to shape it as long as we live."
Bottomline...CHANGE IS ALWAYS POSSIBLE
ps--the change doesn't come in the form of a pill or the experiences of a single outing to a certain said desert, but from prolonged, dedicated, hard work. Sorry y'all, you knew it couldn't be that easy.
Here's to hope and change

It's been my experience that just about anything is possible. Dare to dream it, work to achieve it. :-)

YES!!
Indeed we are even more powerful than this....Believe it! There's so many things we haven't began to do with our brains, like communication without words. Though we have started to do so in so many ways.
BIG UPS TO THE BRAIN!! WOOOT WOOOT!!!! Thanks Alison |

Well...good to know
I'm with your Bottomlne...CHANGE IS ALWAYS POSSIBLE
I don't really need to say more, you clearly are aware of my feelings, but I will say this: First, Thank you for sharing and stating the scientific possibilities of hope, with that said we must acknowledge that all change requires work and dedication and in order for that to happen it must be a personal choice from within... Simply put " you must really have a strong desire and be willing to look in that mirror honestly not for others but for yourself and know that you can make serious lasting changes.. Now that is a Beautiful and POWERFUL. Challenging but not impossible. The question is, Are YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? :) mare mare xo |

to be fair
I think we all need to acknowledge the relativism inherent when discussing how "easy" or "difficult" creating change may be. Personally, I can't judge the amount of effort another person puts forth or how "large" an obstacle they are facing. We all exist in our own universe where our true battles are fought in the privacy of our minds. I've had people tell me my whole life how "easy" things are for me because I make it "look " easy. I'm the only one who knows how ferocious my personal demons really are. I'm the only one who truly knows how many times I thought they might win. I'm the only one who knows that the battle will never really end, it just becomes more familiar. I'm also the only one who knows if I am really trying to tackle my darkest shadows or if I'm kinda skating along. I'm human, so there are times that skating is all I can offer. Other times I suit up in all of my psychic armor and prepare for serious battle. But again, all that is between me and my faith.
