Old thoughts in my head....

Fans

I have had several inquires about the fan in my photo and since I love fans and currently own several (about to get two more!) I thought I would share my sources:

The red fan in my pic with the extra flap of material off the edge is from Baraka Mundi:

These SNAP (open and shut) like a muther, are very dureable and are great for Spanish Stylings and Flamenco inspired dance.

I have a pair of pink fans (just like the ones in my profile) with the extra flap of material off the edge that I got from Gigi's Originals (on ebay but here is a link to her tribe):
tribes.tribe.net/gigioriginals
They are soft, flowing, and lightweight; however the sticks of these fan is not as duraable, abd the rivet is a screw that sticks out just a bit and trieds to come undone after use (I need to fix that), but for softer more Asian inspired dancing these are great fans. If Gigi does not ahve them, I have seen them on ebay from other vendors.

I am getting a pair of these Japanese fighting fans from Lauren:

Some of my dancers got these at a recent workshop and we love them!

I also have an assortment of misc fans I use for just carrying around to fan myself (both when in costume and out) and find them in costume shops, flea markets and the mall. Depending on what you want to do, the price, size and shape of the fan differs greatly - some of my favorite everyday fans are the ones I get at the flea market for $1 while others have cost up to $25 each.

I have taken a few workshops on fan dancing, but am no expert. I also have watched many DVDs of Dance and Martial arts use of fans for inspiration, but the best way is to just put the fan in your hand, start dancing, and see what happens :)

Good luck and have fun!

i *love* fan dance, but was seriously put to shame when my beau (that guy that was with me at spirit ;) ) picked up my fan and started to do a martial arts kata with it PERFECTLY. sigh. he's a great fighter, and watching him do fan technique is breath-taking! now if i could just learn it!
