I am posting (w/ permission) a copy of an e-newsletter written by my mentor & teacher, Sharon Shane. This letter is not to badmouth "The Secret"-but more of the caveat that some people may naively overlook after watching the film. I find it interesting that Esther Hicks is no longer part of the original production- I found a thread here explaining why:

But back to this-Ms. Shane is a channel-for those of you who are wary of such things, well rightfully so, there are many who aren't clear. But I personally have known her and can honestly say that she is pretty clear channel. Oh, and I might she is my teacher-and NOT my guru! Anyway, on to what she has to say :

Because some people have asked, I want to share some insights into my own intuition and what the Masters say regarding the popularity of “The Secret.” As they covered some areas of what they call “avoiding the pitfalls on the spiritual path” in the last Gathering Event, they remind often that this is a time of challenges and tests of discernment. With the many messages claiming to be channeled circulating around the Internet and the multitude of avenues to follow upon the spiritual path, it is all part of the path of discernment. I want to state that I have not read or seen the information that is called “The Secret.” My initial intuitive sense months ago was that this is nothing new but rather is information that has been around for quite awhile packaged in an attractive marketing campaign. My ongoing sense was that the information is too simplistic which can be deceiving and many will have their egos set themselves up for disappointment. Then I was filled in by a friend that this is what I felt it was, nothing new, a rehash of some earlier material by “Abraham Hicks,” which I’m also not familiar with, but material that was covered in numerous books over many decades on “The Law of Attraction.”

The ego will always seek the “quick fix” solution, whether it is a diet pill to lose weight fast or taking a course on how to be an instant millionaire as many television promotions advertise. When the ego feels that something is being kept “secret,” it will rise up and want to know what it is missing out on. This is the entire basis of the insecurity of the ego and its fear that someone might know something it doesn’t know or its fear of being gossiped about. Therefore, the marketing phrase put forth that this work holds “THE secret” will appeal to the masses at the ego level first. There is nothing inherently wrong with marketing, but I’m just pointing out reasons why this title became so popular to the masses. As the Masters said in the Gathering Event, “be mindful of the new age movement turning into the next religion.”

“The Secret” speaks about the “Law of Attraction,” which is what the Masters term the Law of Cause and Effect. The Law of Cause and Effect is based both in physics and quantum physics. The science of quantum physics is the bridge to metaphysical Laws, which exist beyond the basic Law of Cause and Effect of the physical universe, and these differences between physics and metaphysics are addressed in more detail in “Teachings from the Temple of Thoth.”

To understand discernment, keep in mind that there are those that will find their way upon their path by hearing the elementary concepts of “The Secret” for the first time, which will spark their awakening and send them on a path of further seeking. There will also be those that will be enticed by their ego towards the “quick fix solution” and will believe that if they wave their Sorcerer’s Apprentice wand that magic will happen before their eyes thus setting themselves up for disappointment and disillusionment. I spoke about how to move beyond this stage in “Spiritually Awake in the Physical World,” as this is something that I have seen happen time and again whereby people set themselves up for disappointment when the techniques of magical manifestation do not work.

The Masters continue to say that the path of Spiritual Mastery is a disciplined path and there really are no short cuts. It takes total commitment to the spiritual path, which includes the physical realm. Although they reassure that to step fully into Divine Love in an instant is more than possible, it is just “not probable” for humanity and, therefore, must be a progressive path in stages of awakening. What seems to occur in an instant occurs beyond the 4th dimensional linear boundaries of time into the more expanded realm of metaphysics. Understanding this is a very complex Higher science not able to be integrated instantly for the brilliance and genius of the intelligent Light of All That Is would overwhelm the psyche into insanity. Therefore, the progressive steps are all part of Divine Plan.

I want to encourage everyone to allow others to find their way to their Truth through their own lessons of discernment. Whether moving gracefully beyond the elementary concepts of “The Secret,” waking up from the naivete of the child stage of the Soul and into the wisdom of the spiritual master or by learning through the trial and error of disappointment, everyone has their own lessons and pace of growth. Disillusionment is one part of the path to waking to the greater Truth and all paths traversed offer opportunity for growth. It is what the Masters continuously refer to as the growing up from the spiritual adolescent into the spiritual adult stages. It is all part of learning to become a Master Creator. One must first learn to master the 4th dimension before expanding into greater dimensions and all steps are necessary. If you have bumped into those walls of disillusionment, know that to expand consciousness beyond that wall will bring greater spiritual freedom of Truth. The Masters ensure that each and everyone will eventually arrive at the threshold that is what they refer to as “The Masterful Power of Choice.”
