Amara is a graceful dancer who understands the importance of community. She has a strong community of students and troupe members ... and she is reaching out to the wider dance community as well. Together we are stronger than we are individually, eh? She keeps up on what is new in the dance and shares her skills and knowledge with her students and her audience.

You could travel to the shows if you're up to it!
As for the class questions - take a little bit with as many teachers as possible. Cammi Vance was a lot of fun when I had her a few years ago. Bella NaTana is a local (to TX) artist, they a... read more discussion post on Wed, May 7, 2008 - 3:26 PM

Ok, so the past month or so, I haven't had enough time to practice on my own. I mean, I've done my drills here and there, even done some good work at the gym, but I haven't just been able to take an hour to dance. I'm either exhausted from my stupid 7am wake up calls (not going to teach English classes anymore after next week) or I'm just going from job to job and literally don't have a chance.

CW omis - practiced with various layers. Oof. Getting used to double tornado turn and faster with u-tornado turn. Worked on Zoe's triple side undulation lock thingy, cause it could be sharper (maya lock, maya roll up to rib cage, lock, maya roll up to head, lock). Vibration with locks (any I can think of) feels good. Practiced belly rolls for a while - been slacking on those for a while and I can tell!... read more

Tried for like an hour to do it with CW omis, though. Sad face! Can only do it veeeeeeeeeeeery slow. Drilled plain CW omis for a while, too. Vibration with layers. Big hip lift shimmy is - dare I say it - finally improving? It's been 5 years. Literally. Mayas and vertical 8s with shoulder rolls - all feels challenging but good.
I've had several people asking for my dance journal, which is mostly in my head and partly on little notecards scattered throughout my purse. But I thought this might help me and hopefully will help those who've asked, too. If you're reading this, post back and share your daily/weekly project!

Ah, Amara . . . where to start? First of all, I can definitely attest to all that Adam wrote in his testimonial. He said everything that I wanted to say, but more eloquently! She has an amazing ability to both teach and dance. Most people are only capable of doing either one or the other well. People with great skill/ability generally can't break things down well enough to teach the rest of us and people who are great teachers may have a great understanding of their topic, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have great skill. Amara definitely has both. She is, as Adam said, impossible to take your eyes off of when she's performing, but she's also well able to explain what she does and how she does it. She has always been able to explain movements in more than one way, and is able to teach to everyone's varied learning style. I have learned SO MUCH from her in the past three years. I feel lucky to have had the chance to study under her and to become friends with someone for whom I have so much admiration and respect.

When I think of Amara, I think of grace, beauty, intelligence, caring, generosity, strength, creativity, and humor. She is an incredible dancer, a wonderful teacher, and a marvelous person. She makes others want to watch what she does, to be as she is, to follow where she leads, to learn what she can teach. Onstage, no one can take their eyes from her; in the classroom and on the street, everyone wants to be around her. She's amazing, and if you know her, you know how lucky you are to know her.
