Where are we again?
Mon, September 4, 2006 - 4:47 PMNow we might have figured out it was in Hollywood if it would have been referred to as the Grauman Chinese Theater.
And it just brought up that old conversation we've been having for years: WE SHOULD NOT BE RE-NAMING OUR GREAT PLACES AND LANDMARKS AFTER COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS.
Now what happens when Kodak doesn't want the Grauman Theater anymore. Next year it could be called the Conagra Theater, and then where will I be?
We just never seem to know where we are anymore. Right here in Houston Enron Field has already become Minute Maid Park, what next? The Summit turned into the Compaq Center and now it's a church.
Maybe we should re-name the Statue of Liberty the Trump Statue. Then we can make Donald Trump pay for the repairs next time it needs to be fixed. How about naming Niagra Falls Viagra Falls? Would it still be so popular as a honeymoon spot after that? Maybe couples checking into honeymoon suites in the Viagra Falls area could receive free samples at check-in. The marketing opportunities are endless.
That's exactly why someone should put a stop to this. We just want to go see a show at the Knickerbocker Arena, not the Pepsi Arena. When I go to the Philadelphia, I want to see a show at the Spectrum or the Camden E-Center, not the Wachovia Center or the Sony E-Center. Forget about it!
I am going to keep referring to the beautiful places in our great USA by their proper names, and I just hope someday the advertisers come to their senses and do the same. Who's with me?

Oh we're with you on this one...
gets more and more confusing each time we take a road trip for shows...what was something last year is something different this year....and for those of you who may not realize this, the Corporation in name at any given time also attracks a vastly different crowd than the typical "music loving," crowd of friends we are all used to. We've seen this over and over again. For even if folks aren't into the game/music/etc. then they are out "having fun," chatting it up, getting drunk and loud, etc. cause they're tix were free from where they work otherwise they would have never thought twice about even going on that evening.
And then theres the whole issue of who the particular Sponsor supports politically and by the very purchase of a ticket we go on to support same whether we agree and/or disagree - I do realize we're getting on deeper and deeper levels here but it is something folks need to know and better now or later. So, just another level to this larger issue Amy has very appropriately brought to the forefront of our attention. Thanks Amy, nice to know someone else is still calling landmarks and old venues by their original name. Maybe we can all help each other out this way over time and we could come up with a chart that dates back to the beginning of each venue and what its original name truly is. Perhaps each of us could refer to the venues in the areas where we currently reside in doing so. Just a thought. |
