<div>the strangest thing that happened to me at burning man:

i was sitting in center camp and it was 4 am, well, from 2 something until 4 am. part of the time, about an hour, i was alone while my partner was in coffee line. it was cold, it was early, i was tired. i was sitting there when this short lady came by and asked me if i was needing the second chair infront of me. i said my partner was using it. she found another chair and came back and asked if she could use the table next to me.

i am not sure why she wanted my chair, or the table next to me.

she sat there and gave this one guy a tarot reading. they had conflict. he was looking for inner wisdom and guidance, but he had not patience and was not really quiet enough to listen, hear or learn. it was almost comical to watch. he was reaching for the cards when not appropriate, flipping too many over. spacegirl was patient and kind. i could feel her energy working not to get riled. trying to let him be who he was. she knew that being upset was nothing good nor worthwhile. he left and no one else came up while we were sitting there.

i had been a touch defensive when i was keeping my partners chair, and i could feel her pondering me. wondering something about me. maybe she saw into me too. maybe she was wondering who i was.

i looked over to her and acknowledged her, met her eyes, gave her my name. we spoke and engaged each other. her eyes were so direct, she was so present. i wanted to admit things to her. i did not. i could have. she is special - she knows it.

she reached out and touched me, i am not sure why. maybe it was a reflection or a rememberance. she felt famlliar. she is kind. i will not forget spacegirl.</div>

<div>europe is beautiful, it is wonderful, it is stunning, it is old. the food is amazing, the country beautiful, but you know what........?

for me it is the people. i love people. i love them for what they bring to me, what they show me, what they give me, what they teach me. i love the way they feel. i love to see them, to know them, to learn them, and share them.

most of all, i love to lay in cuddle puddles with them all rolled up, i love to hug them and hold them close, i love to kiss them and let them know what they mean to me and show them their beauty in my eyes.

yup -- it is the people.

(and then we all do dances with our tiny shoes...i miss you guys, i love you, thank you for sharing your bests with me)

this is for my campmates:

tiny shoes

there were little shoes
living with Guido
they lay silent
dormant
waiting

they broke out
saw the sun
saw the rain
danced and danced
always, on the run

some got married and
drank drinks and got drunk
and dance and danced
and then danced

they grew dizzy
we were all in love

didn’t you come to

    </a>
<div>Reading another’s submission to the tales of what Burning Man has done to and for me made me cry and then made me start to write. I want to share how the burn changed me.

Alone

I have lived in San Francisco practically my whole life. The City is interesting and wondrous, but to me, it is mostly that way for adults, growing up here was just as hard as anywhere USA. The girls who were my best friends in elementary school taught me how to spell my spelling words wrong to try and make me look bad. They were not good friends. My freshman year in high school, I started to do drama, but it was melding in with the people who did not fit in anywhere, which is not to say I had found my niche in friends, or in life. Still, alone.

1996 in San Francisco, I was living with my friend on Twin Peaks and was not in a relationship, for the first time in along time and I was starting to go out and do things outside the little world I had created, where I still felt alone. My roommate/ friend introduced me to a guy he had met. This guy and I hung out a bit, he was amazing….full of fire and energy, blazing his trail in life. He did not try and tell me too much about Burning Man, but did tell me it was important that I go. He talked me into it. The Life Sized Mousetrap was what he was working on. It took six flat bed trucks full of stuff to build it. He drove them up to the playa himself.

Two of my female friends, maybe my only two female friends at the time, journeyed with me to the playa. We left San Francisco in the evening, met people in a Suzuki Samurai who were going to the burn as well. They were five people in the little car and it was full of stuff. Our car had just finished packing our supplies when they pulled in. Conversation was struck and we decided to wait for them, since they had gone to the playa before and we were virgins. They come out of the store an hour or so later, and now have two grocery carts of stuff to pack into the car with them and their other stuff. That took another hour or two. Running out of room, they asked us to carry their rug. We did so.

They were drunk as skunks and had to stop every ten miles or so to pee. It was like watching a clown car; car stops, everyone jumps out, scuttles into the darkness, and pees and then jumps back in. They are driving kind of fast and Samurais are known for their tippage factor, the car going up on two wheels and we are wincing in fear for their lives.

We drive up to the gates just an hour or so before dawn and they take back their rug, which confuses us, we are thinking, we will just see them on other side of the gate. Little did we know!!!!!

At the gate, the gatekeeper greets us and says, watch your odometer, and five miles from now, you take a right and then you will be there…. Now, I am adventuresome, probably more than most, but “watch your odometer and take a right”, is just not making me feel comfortable. What choice do we have? We start off in a line with five other cars, who also pass gate at about the same time. Soon we are enveloped in a huge cloud of dust from the other cars, which have passed us. I am driving and my friends start to shriek about running into the back of the cars ahead. One of them never smokes pot and we had given her some, heheheh. She was understandably upset as it makes her paranoid. We were fine, but it was like entering into another world, trusting a stranger at a random point on the desert, and driving miles off into the desert, with no idea of where I was going or what I was going to see, we kept on. Still in the dust cloud, I am trying to figure out how to make sure I am going straight, which was the other direction I received from gatekeeper, but figured that as a long as I did not get too far off course, we would be ok. I think I asked my friend to watch the steering wheel to make sure I was not straying off course, stoner maneuver? At the mark, we turn right and lo and behold was The Man, standing in the sky, a beacon. I want to cry just thinking about that moment.

It took quite a while to find my friend, who just said, look for a huge bunch of stuff, and I will be there. We drove around for hours and hours, there were no streets, no porta potties could be seen, it was utterly wild! So unknown, it was like being installed into the twilight zone. We did eventually find him after hours of asking and circling.

During the next few days, I helped build the Life Sized Mouse Trap, Mark (my friend’s friend) still remembers me from those days and I also found out about Burning Man, the credos, and the people; coming home (Again, with the tears!).

There were no music camps, just drum circles. I had a new friend I met on playa, play music for me one night and I danced all night long on the edge of the playa. People came up to me for the rest of the weekend and asked me if it was me who was thrashing my body at the edge of the desert. I was drunk on red wine and high on desert. I had many amazing adventures. My friend built a two story tower, which collapsed with me and eight other people on it. I met one friend who is still my friend today. One year, I found an old high school buddy. These things seem tame, but it is what makes up my home and heart.

Burning Man, to me, is home. It is the place where I became part of the community I (my heart) was searching for. A group of people who recognize corporate power and want to bring that power back to the individuals. Who do things for the things sake or for plain desire to do, then burn it, or take it home after sharing it. Everyone gives hugs to each other. We are self reliant and responsible, once we have that sorted, we have something left to share with others. People who enliven their dreams and do what they want to do, everyone be damned, especially the nay sayers!

I am proud to be human and my belief in humanity returns in full force every year I attend the event. When I read Jack Rabbit Speaks or think about the event too long or too hard, I cry. It moves me deeply. I have a home and all of you are my family, we live at home, in our hearts, Burning Man.

This the poem I wrote days after returning home:

Burning Man 1996

I hate to try and write
About the ultimate experience
Justice can not do to words
Nor words justice to experience
Of what the truth is about Burning Man

Nothing to note
Noting nothing but a piece
Of possibilities that lie
Lying possibility, lying all around

Searching and seeking
Seeking to search
For the description indescribable
It didn't even take LSD to make me trip

Time was warped
I warped time
Into the loop we ran
Further always further
To try and find the moment
It all became clear

The harder we searched
The faster we rolled
Away from who we were
Down the playa
To the next set of lights
Up the playa
No end in sight

Fires began burning
Burning began all around
Took away towers
Ashes fell down
Hard to find the way
When all the neon is gone

The harder we searched
No end in sight
The lights were end
To only one night

9/96

    </a>
<div>while we were at sykes, i had the second worst nightmare of my life. i have been thinking about why it happened. i think that the unknown and sleeping out in the open, sans tent, made my subconcious manifest the dream. the river sounded like a fan if you had your eyes closed.

i was a guy riding a motorcycle and doing good deeds for people. the bike was uber quick, like flip a switch and you are where you want to be kind of quick. then, all of a sudden, i was with a little kid, who was like a little brother to me. i was trying to convince him to do something about his little brother. i started to shake him, then picked up a rock and started to pound on his stomache with the rock telling him he needed to convince his brother. then his eyes started to shudder in his head and so did another person, i all of a sudden noticed behind the kid. the guy was in his twenties and was blond, with a goatee. his eyes, their eyes shaking, no other sounds, just forrest.

then i woke up. i was very scared and did not want to risk going back there. it was soo scary.

it feels like i was falling into deep sleep and my subconcious ( this has manifested before) decides for me that it is too deep a sleep and makes me wake up. it took me more than an hour to fall back to sleep. wild and sick.

jason said it sounds like desperation (know it?)</div>

<div>as i look out the window
the sea stays blue
an unnatural hue
no usual bright sprites of sunrays dancing on water
i feel you in the air
you are keeping it blue
reaching into my heart
touching the sun and sky
you keep it all blue

there is a stripe of light
it too is blue

the squeezing of my heart
the plucking of my strings
the pain of where you lived in my world each day
look, the sea is blue

tears, roll and roll
fall and fall
hurt, burn and smear
while the sea stays blue
it is blue for you
