back in the day before the modern dairy, farmers used to keep the cows baby calves locked up in teh barnyard. the cows would spend all day grazing and at dusk would come home to feed there calves and then the farmers would milk them We did this when I was growing up and it works like a charm

It means for a long time or all day.
Cows would go out to pasture and stay out all night. In the morning, they would appear at the gate ready for feeding or milking. |

Calif has the Happy Cows
I don't know... but I do have to laugh at the
California Happy Cow commercials... I think the ones up our way are happy because of the Humboldt Air that makes them smile lol And heck the cows in Calif are too stoned to find home sometimes lol remember where those funny mushrooms grow lol |

being a country boy I'd say they got it close enough to right. You don't have to lock up the calves to get the cows to come back at the end of the day. The cows come home because their udders are full and they are uncomfortable and need to be milked. You lock up the calves so they don't suck all day so the cows have milk to give.
