about me
I'm a jazz musician and recovered academic. I play saxophone, lead a band, compose, record & tour. I was doing a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence at Stanford (five years in) when I did a big "about face"... much happier and healthier ever since.

Always on the lookout for good partners-in-crime. Upbeat people who notice funny little things about the world that others overlook. Sass and skepticism are great. Cynics need not apply.

Me, I'm whimsical, analytical, affectionate. Creative but with a streak of perfectionism. Very upbeat. My sense of humor ranges from screwball to deadpan. Big lover of life and its possibilities. I've had enough trying times in my life to develop compassion, but I still haven't become bitter and don't plan to. I'm a good listener (except maybe when I've woken up from a nap)...

This & That...

Got an SUV? Or a normal car that you feel bad about driving because of it its emissions? I just discovered a company with an amazing concept...

An average SUV generates 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide over the course of a year. For $79, Terrapass <terrapass.com> will eliminate an equivalent amount of emissions, and send you a decal you can place on your car verifying that fact. It achieves this by funding alternative fuel projects and by purchasing and retiring emissions credits on ... read more

Tenor sax player Hank Mobley was born on this day 75 years ago. A favorite among sax players, he's virtually unknown outside the jazz community. But unlike many "musician's musicians" his playing is extremely accessible, falling solidly in the down-to-earth school they call Hard Bop. If you want to check out his stuff, start with "Soul Station" - I just reviewed it at www.tribe.net/recommendat...fd24e474832d

Sara Lazarus won first place in the first Thelonius Monk vocal competition, but she's been living in Paris ever since and has never been much a part of the international jazz scene. Maybe that will change now that she's just finally releasing her debut CD on Dreyfus Records. I've known Sara for a long time, and if you're not familiar with her, I'm happy to report that she's the real deal. A warm, genuine person and a very natural musician. So unusual for a talent of this order to make the cho... read more

One of the great recording studios in the Bay Area turned out its lights yesterday. Spark (www.sparkworld.com), located in Emeryville, was a gordeous studio with resonant acoustics and an outrageous 9 foot Yamaha grand. It sold its location to Pixar. The owner, Tony Mills, will continue to do some work - mostly video and post-production, a little audio tracking - out of his home studio in Rockridge. Among the fine albums recorded there was Mark Levine's 2003 grammy-nominated recording "ISLA".... read more

( local favorites » restaurants ) "Much needed" Great, healthy mexican food in an area that could use another excellent taqueria. They use quality meats and often organic produce.

Soul Station - Hank Mobley
( miscellaneous » music reviews ) "Soul Station" Hank Mobley was born 75 years ago today, so it seems fitting to put in a plug for what I consider his greatest album, "Soul Station." He recorded it in 1960 for Blue Note Records, a collection of standards and original compositions with the outsta... read more

Ugetsu" - Art Blakey
( miscellaneous » music reviews ) "Live jazz at its greatest" Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were not just an historical jazz group but an institution of jazz education, a springboard that launched the careers of many of the greatest jazz musicians of the past thirty years. This album showcases one of the fine... read more

My Testimonials

June 14, 2005
Anton is one of the most widely respected jazz musicians in the Bay Area and has already gathered a national following. Illinois Jacquet himself dug Anton! (If you follow jazz, Illinois Jacquet was a legendary sax man). Anton also may be one of the *smartest* jazz musicians--he was formerly a PhD candidate at Stanford working on artificial intelligence problems, which are among the hardest in academia. Anton's loft concerts in Oakland are always a sellout crowd.
