The Waking Up

The first time he saw me, I had just crossed the Lithodendron Wash to enter the Black Forest valley of the Painted and Petrified Forest and Desert. The wild hare tore off across the desert floor a ridiculous distance at a ridiculous clip, to the steep brown rolling gravel hill and zagged up it and over the horizon. He kept going, too, because moments later he reappeared for an instant to cross a further hill's horizon. And then again another moments later.

The second time he saw me, he didn't move at all. He didn't even turn his head which faced a white stone pedestal bench. I took the seat in front of him, at a distance of about 8 feet and we looked into each others eyes for a long time. Was it fear that kept him rooted in front of me, only shifting his wait slightly a couple of times? Was he as afraid as the baby rattlesnake who shook his little tail at me? Some of these creatures carry the Bubonic Plague. Maybe I should have been afraid.

Do you think fear is appropriate for humans? Should we cast it from our lives and protect ourselves with common sense, instead? Facing ones fears usually shows us that we fear the wrong things and clearly, our fears are oftentimes baseless. Do you think fear is useful or is it to be conquered completely?

"When you fix, you assume something is broken. When you help, you see the person as weak. But when you serve, you see the person as intrinsically whole. You create a relationship in which both parties gain." -Rachel Naomi Remen

In the Service of Life

Serving is different from helping.
Helping incurs debt. But serving, like healing, is mutual.
Serving is also different from fixing. There is distance
between ourselves and whatever or whomever we are fixing.
Fixing is a form of judgement. All judgement creates
distance, a disconnection, an experience of difference.
If helping is an experience of strength, fixing is an
experience of mastery and expertise.
Service on the other hand, is an experience of mastery,
surrender, and awe. We cannot serve at a distance.
We can only serve that to which we are profoundly connected,
that which we are willing to touch.
We serve life not because it is broken, but because it is holy.

Not only does this man looks great in orange, but he is true and nice and sweet and kind. He is like a butter, sweet cream variety. Argon can be found at the best parties-- always cool chillen with a smile on his face. He is a real piller in our Burner community, always upholding our value systems, oh yes. I speak for many when I say: we love you Argon!!
