Read an electronic book?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 5:11 AMBut online reading? Reading a newspaper article or blog online, sure. They're short and not optically painful. But a book? Does anyone think the Kindle will successfully encourage book readers?
My experience in school was that people tended to print out anything posted online to read...

For me, I plan to stick to my hardcore, tree-killing ways. Although I mostly frequent libraries, so you could say that I recycle.

I don't think electronic books will take off until a new interface is developed. I mean if they develop a notepad type screen that I can hold in my lap...in a hammock....in the tub (if I so wish to take that risk) then reading electronic books might catch on. There is no way I would sit at my computer (or hold a lap top) and read...I hate it. I print out all documents at work that require editing or detailed reading. I cannot work from online sources.
I think this is either years away or still waiting on that big technology breakthrough. |

and I just feel like it's abusive to my eyes. but maybe if they could make it more...user friendly? flip pages by touch. i just can't stand the idea of getting to the climactic plot point and seeing (MALFUNCTION) or (LOW BATTERY).

Apparently the kindle is a lot more "book-like" than people initially anticipated. Unfortunately, given the price, I'm not really inclined to try it out right now.

I see people in the airport with these little paperback-sized electronic book things. Yeah, there's a certain romance about a real book... the smell of the ink on new books... the smell of the paper on old books. It's more of an experience for me than just the words I'm reading. I'm with you, Ariel!

I guess i also like the idea of buying a good book and being able to loan it to a friend. But i doubt you could do that with a kindle...not without an extra charge.
