If you think shipping freight from Cincinnati to El Paso is challenging, imagine trying to deliver an oxygen generation unit from the Earth to a remote location on the moon. By 2020, NASA plans to establish a long-term human presence on the moon, potentially centered on an outpost to be built at the rim of the Shackleton crater near the lunar South Pole. To make such a scenario possible, a reliable stream of consumables such as fuel, food and oxygen, sp... read more

So let me get this straight, by putting "OT" in the subject line, you can pretty much post anything you want?
That's like saying, "with all due respect..." and then thinking that saying anything you want is entirely okay. www.youtube.com/... read more discussion post on Thu, November 19, 2009 - 1:47 PM

I'm weirder than you. It's my destiny. -=*=- -=*=- Humanity does not ask us to be happy. It merely asks us to be brilliant on its behalf. Survival first, then happiness as we can manage it. -=*=- Libra Sun Leo Moon Aquarius ascendant Leo Venus Aries Jupiter Leo Saturn -=*=- Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone, For sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air, The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go. They want full measure of all your pleasure. But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all--- There are none to decline your nectar'd wine, But alone you must drink life's gall. Feast, and your halls are crowded; Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a large and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain. by Ella Wheeler Wilcox -=*=-

Here is an unsurprisingly cheesy demo video of the potentially interesting Gibson Robot Guitar. It tunes itself. Fortunately for me (and Sonic Youth), you can switch it to manual tuning. Just about the only thing I can do on a guitar is tune it. And play the opening chords to Ziggy Stardust. Oh yeah, and the bassline to Bela Lugosi's Dead. Retail price for the Robot Guitar is $2499. Quick reminder: the Electronic Frontier Foundation's 17th Birthday Bash is tomorrow night, the 15th of January, at the 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. Don't forget to RSVP! The birthday bash will be on January 15, 7-11 PM, at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. Headliners Adrian & the Mysterious D (A+D), the DJ duo that founded the seminal mashup party "Bootie," will be dropping a shameless, genre-smashing blend of tracks, backed up by DJ sets from Bay Area copyfighters Ripley, Kid Kameleon and EFF's own J Tones and Qubitsu. The EFF party will also feature an exclusive chocolate sampling with TCHO, "a new chocolate company for a new generation of chocolate enthusiasts." Founded by Wired co-founder Louis Rossetto and legendary chocolatier Timothy Childs, himself a former technologist, TCHO will be bringing a "beta release" of its best dark chocolate to the party table. Attendees are invited to vote for their favorite TCHO beta chocolate flavors at the party -- feedback that will help define TCHO's next steps as they gear up for a national release. Dan sez, "Thought you'd like this feature I did for Portfolio about the MediaDefender meltdown. I tracked down the hacker who broke into the company and the pirates who used the data to their advantage. But the story is largely a way to ask why Hollywood is following the music industry's footsteps in believing that that P2P is an enemy that must be stopped (no matter the cost or the unlikelihood of declaring victory). I thought this quote from Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Company summarized Hollywood's take pretty much perfectly:" "This is not Napster," says Harvey Weinstein, the movie mogul who heads the Weinstein Co., a MediaDefender client. "Online piracy has got to be stopped. The biggest spear in the neck of the pirates will be (a) being vigilant, (b) prosecuting, and (c) in a way, making fun of them, finding a way to say, 'That's not cool -- that's anything but cool.' If you had people who the young people respect in this industry -- Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Shia LaBeouf -- these guys did public service announcements that said, 'Don't steal, stealing's not cool,' I think you can go a long way toward stopping this." Weinstein says that if Democrats maintain control of Congress and gain the White House, he'll flex whatever political muscle he has acquired by being a major donor to achieve one thing: "Tougher, more stringent piracy laws." Does he see any use for P2P systems? "No." Link (Thanks, Dan!)...
