My Blog

I've been massively sleep-deprived this whole week due to a number of reasons. Today after work I came home and passed out sitting up in bed, watching TV. I ended up having a pretty intense dream where I was down the peninsula by the shore of the bay, and saw a nuclear bomb go off in San Francisco. Somehow I ended up then going into the city, and it was complete chaos... masses of people wandering aimlessly, some buildings mangled, some untouched. The order of law had completely broken do... read more

It has been determined without a doubt that living in my house is contrary to my long-term life goals. I can't save any money, the bills there are absurd, and my roommates are messy, socially distant, and having major financial problems. I'll be moving out around the new year.

I've lived in my house for four years, and it's going to suck having to move out. It's a nice place, but the cost and drama are just too much for my current life situation. The upside is, I'll be able to save som... read more

at 3:15 in the afternoon, trying to think of the best way to thaw out two massive frozen squids, and scrambling to find an old ITT telephone that I pilfered from my parents' office over half my life ago.

After shooting a 25-second rack focus test in 16mm a week ago, my teammates determined the film had, somewhere between operator #1 and #3 (I was operator #4), jammed inside the ancient Arriflex camera we had been assigned. So, this weekend became take two. Everything went amazingly smoot... read more

Filmed silent, in color super-8. I eventually plan on having my films available for download via the interwebz.

Things I've learned thus far:

-Know your camera lens' minimum focal length, and keep that in mind when storyboarding
-Do not schedule shots that involve fire when there may be a gusty wind
-The ground catches fire when you tip over a barbecue filled with flaming eucalyptus bark
-If there is the possibility of it being chilly and cold, make sure your actors/actresses bring ... read more

You know that feeling you get when you do something for the first time the right way and it just feels awesome? Today was the first day actually filming using the Super-8 cameras in my filmmaking class. Since I'm fairly well-versed in focusing/framing/etc through my experience with regular photography, I picked up everything I needed to fairly quickly, and actually ended up spending most of my time teaching camera operation and cinematography basics to my group partners. Just doing basic c... read more

about me
I'm Robert. We've probably met once or twice, at least. I'm a fairly busy guy, as I'm presently studying filmmaking, I'm extremely social, I DM at various venues, and I generally meet more people in one week than most people do in a year. Please don't feel bad if I can't remember your name, as my memory sucks anyway.

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades. I've worked in fine woodworking, carpentry, education, software, architecture, and just about anything else you can think of. I may or may not be known for my baking ability. I also may or may not be known for high-quality ties and tailored shirts. My life couldn't be scripted better, mostly defined by periods of brief, intense chaos, followed by ample amounts of routine, peppered randomly with humorous absurdities and anomalies. Rinse, repeat.

I'm that guy you see sipping a cup of tea in the middle of the room sketching architectural features in a black book, or discussing the effects of globalization and the Congress of Vienna. I'm an odd contradiction in many ways, and I enjoy a well-balanced life. In the grand scheme of the assembly line, I'm the machine that came with a few parts missing and a few parts extra. In addition to being rather dominant and a bit of a sadist, I'm one of those snuggly hopeless romantic idiots who takes pride in being a 'nice guy'. My oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are world-famous, I can renovate entire houses by myself, and I can save cacti and potted lawns from the brink of death.

I have two extremely out-of-date websites www.beefpile.com/gnarler/main.html and www.beefpile.com/axisworks that have some additional tasty bits.

Additionally, I have a Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/axisworks/

I am a straight, dominant top and I prefer monogamous relationships.
