Musings from life in my fast lane

Well, I did it.....and it didn't go as well as I had hoped.

This is a whiny post and I make no appologies for it! My makeup class was only attended by members of student troupe. That was disappointment #1. Disappointment #2--one of them brought her teenage daughter with her who kept saying "mom, you look like a hooker." #3 the other attendee complained about everything and how her illness prevents her from processing information (I digress, but I think that maybe she needs to quit using her illness as an excuse for everything). None of the main troupe members showed up to help out and then my friend the makeup guru flaked out on me and couldn't show up.

The makeup application itself wasn't too bad and they enjoyed seeing the DVDs of FCBD's and Ansuya's makeup application and tips. Of course, they tried to imitate the look with the wrong tools and products but they realized that and that was a good thing. I realized that I have the totally wrong color of blush and that the eye shadow I chose was maybe a little too intense....LOL.....waaaay too intense! So generally, I need to tweak things a little bit to get the information across to everyone and then everyone needs to show up and maybe the main troupe members need to show up and tell us what kind of "look" they really want us to have.
I feel like I failed miserably.
Then I forgot the 'before' pics. Took an after pic of one of the participants and someone took one of me. I will post them eventually.
They want me to try this again next Friday or sometime next week when everyone can come (hopefully) and then makeup wise, we might be ready for our first performance as a troupe.
I'm so disappointed :(

A hooker? LOL...Oh my goodness!!! The reality is that for performing...stage makeup must be strong. So sorry to hear but don't let it get you down. Being a teacher you know that anytime you attempt to teach something new, issues arise. Its only when you do it over and over do you become more proficient and capable of handling specific concerns as they pertain to the subject area...and unwarranted comments better. It probably wasn't as bad as you imagined and I am sure the second time around will be better.

~Gosh...I could really use a make up class....always been challenged in that area!

I don't teach dance, but I teach high school art and I agree that sometimes the first time through a lesson it doesn't always flow the way you want. You realize the things you need to change, and the things you just need to slightly tweek. If there are a lot of questions about one certain thing then you know you need to spend more time on it. Use it as a positive tool to change the workshop and you'll be great next time......As for the "hooker" comment. I snorted my coffee *grin* We always joke about that....Stage makeup on stage is amazing. Stage makeup on a quick run to the grocery store for pins is very bad. You do look like a Ho' admit it! *grin*

WOW!
Listen to your tribal sistahs! This is all great advice! I love learning from teachers and even when I'm teaching now, I make little discoveries on how to better teach something! Lightbulb moments go off in MY head! I love those moments!

I've taught voice, piano, audition techniques, kids, adults, you name it i've heard the whiny, the complaints, crying which brings everything to a screeching halt and I find that the best way to deal with that is NOT too--that's how they get their power, the attention, whatever.... Anyways, i'm going to have a make-up class soon myself after taking a workshop with Princess Farhana and being soooo inspired! It should've been fun not something you feel defeated about! Learn from it, laff about it and go on!

By the way, I have no clue how to do make-up besides slapping on some mascara,, and being terrible allergic to most of the stuff, I can only use Lancome Kohl pencil, not even their eye-shadow. I would be one of those people saying but I like pink why cannot I use pink blush etc....

Ditto....Things don't always go the way we wish, especially the first time. But don't let it get you down and just pick yourself up and do it again. I'm sure those who did attend had a great time and did learn something. Don't take it personally that others backed out or didn't show. Things happen and I'm sure they didn't mean it as a personal afront to you. I find that sometimes people just don't realize how important it is to support your peeps. They mean well in spirit, but it sure would be nice if they showed up. Keep doin it and they will come! {{{HUGS}}}
