i decided to forget the bread & mashed potatoes
we can have them tommorrow or this weekend
no pie either but the yam is plenty sweet
the cork screw won't work
the floor is filthy
so is the tub

a few years ago all my books were taken from me in black bags
they were buried in a basement dug into a stone foundation several feet thick
the cards had warned me of treachery that my legacy was being stolen
but I was still surprised
I cried for my books
I ached for them like a lost mother
my books were my only capital
shelves of knowledge & language
something tactile & substantial to hold & caress
I cried for all my beautiful books
books were how I decorated my house

Lugarda's week old kibbih. Gravy from Roy's 7 bone roast. Mashed potatoes. Turnip pickles in beet juice from Sinbad's. Sour cream from Daisy. Day old Day of the Dead bread, pan de muertos. Then it will be time for bed. What? You would rather be thin?

there's apple cider to drink
