Gamelan Cudamani - Odalan Bali: An Offering of Music & Dance (UCLA Royce Hall Sun 11/18 7 pm)

www.uclalive.org/event.asp
www.cudamani.org

ÇUDAMANI, the 26-member music & dance ensemble from Bali, Indonesia presents ODALAN BALI featuring cutting edge new works as well as rare classical forms of Gamelan repertoire in 12 cities across USA and Canada Oct-Nov, 2007. Cudmanai's Odalan Bali is an exquisite synthesis of sound and motion that captures the exhilarating splendor and creative life force of the Balinese temple festival. Shimmering polyrhythms of gamelan music and the dazzling brilliancy of dancers fill the stage where every movement, gesture and musical note is crafted and executed with emotion and energy. Cudamani's Odalan Bali transports the audience with its music, dance and spectacle and brings to life the vibrant world of the Balinese people.

“The performance brought us closer to the essence of a culture than most touring or touristic performances ever can, making us question and perhaps reject the ways that non-western or pre-western traditions are commonly presented on our stages.” – Los Angeles Times

Considered a leading creative force in its native Bali, the gamelan ensemble Cudamani (pronounced SOOD-a-mani) creates emotional and energetic works that transport audiences into a vibrant world inspired by Bali’s timeless cycles of ceremony and ritual. Following its successful 2005 U.S. tour, this acclaimed troupe of musicians and dancers returns in this exquisite synthesis of music, dance, spectacle and soundscape that vibrantly captures the exhilarating splendor of the Balinese temple festival. From the clamor of villagers working at dawn to the calm of prayer and worship, and from the meditative resonance of voice and flute to virtuosic dances, the work traces the life of a ceremony and speaks to the enduring strength of Balinese culture.

Funded in part by the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Price: $42, 30, 22 ($15 UCLA students)

Neko Case performing "BITTERSWEET COUNTRY" at Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) tonight (Fri 11/16 8 pm)

www.laweekly.com/music/mus...lle/17706/

Neko Case: Deep Red Belle
She's an auburn-haired Caucasian woman of Ukrainian descent. Is Case also the blackest woman in indie rock?

Neko Case’s voice is brassy, miscegenated and classic. When she’s on a roll, time, place, race and syntax fall away, as exemplified in her best early composition, “Deep Red Bells”: “The red bells beckon you to ride/A handprint on the driver’s side/It looks a lot like engine oil/And tastes like being poor and small/And Popsicles in summer.” Pure emotion conveyed through solid facts rather than weak abstractions, her lyrical details evoke scenes from an unmade autobiographical film about her life. The story arc would be a cross between those recent Ray Charles and Johnny Cash biopics: moments of childhood sweetness experienced in an environment of overwhelming deprivation.

Displaying her roots in traditional country and indie rock, the wistful and melancholy melodies of singer/songwriter Neko Case capture a lingering emotional density rarely heard in contemporary music. Evocative tales of love and loss lead listeners to a dark and beautiful place for this special evening.

NEKO CASE DEBUTS AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL AS PART OF THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION'S 2007/2008 SONGBOOK SERIES

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2007, AT 8 PM
WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL, 111 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles

Acura is the sponsor for the concert - All Acura vehicles park for free for the evening
KCRW is the Media Sponsor

Singer/songwriter Neko Case brings her unique musical style and lyrical prowess to the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday, November 16, at 8 p.m. Her debut performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall includes selections from her fifth solo and critically-lauded album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. The special evening features Case on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, along with a bevy of talented musicians including: frequent musical foil Kelly Hogan on backing vocals; longtime bandmates Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel, banjo, arch-top and Hawaiian guitars, and Tom Ray on stand-up bass; and Canadian cohorts Paul Rigby on guitars and Barry Mirochnick on drums and percussion.

A true artist, poet, and visionary, Case has developed a style that defies generic categorization. Though she played in punk bands, she has long been entrenched and heavily influenced by the sorrowful tales of country music and the passion of gospel. Her intricate and dynamic vocal stylings have resulted in the observation that she is, according to NPR, "quietly re-writing the rules of American song. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood - two years in the making from conception to completion - is lyrically reflective and self-assessing while embodying a familiar yet foreign tone.

Each year since its inception, the Songbook series has brought Walt Disney Concert Hall audiences some of the most cherished evenings of song. The remainder of the 2007/2008 series includes: Bernadette Peters: "Just a Broadway Baby" on February 17, 2008; and John Pizzarelli: "Dear Mr. Sinatra" on March 16, 2008.

NEKO CASE grew up in Washington, attended art school in Vancouver, left home and quit school at the age of 15 and submerged herself in the world of country, gospel and punk music. She claims no genre, nor utilizes any classic formula for her songs and singing. More than anything she thrives in the spaces between her music. Her early affiliations include contemporary gigs in distaff punk trios Maow and Cub, as well as a longer (and continued) stint in powerhouse Canadian pop group the New Pornographers. Although she maintains an affinity for punk music and its offshoots, it was the discovery of an obscure spiritual album by Bessie Griffin & Her Gospel Pearls that provided an important paradigm shift for her early on. Since the late '90s, the bulk of Case's energies have been devoted to a thriving solo career. Following three critically-lauded studio albums, 1997's The Virginian, 2000's Furnace Room Lullaby and 2002's masterful Blacklisted; a quietly potent kitchen-recorded EP, Canadian Amp (2005); and 2004's brilliantly conceived concert collection The Tigers Have Spoken, Case re-emerges in 2006 with her latest, Fox Confessors Brings the Flood. Through Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, she has created a record that's confessional, poignant and, ultimately, an honest representation of where she is today.

NEKO CASE, vocals, acoustic and electric guitar
KELLY HOGAN, backing vocals
JON RAUHOUSE, pedal steel, banjo, arch-top and Hawaiian guitars
TOM RAY, stand-up bass
PAUL RIGBY, guitars
BARRY MIROCHNICK, drums and percussion
