It has always smacked of elitism to me as well. Is it impossible for me to know what life is like for a Kennedy because I am not one? Is it inconceivable for me to know what movie stars go through because I am not famous?

The waistline is at the right level for French 1650-60's; plus the big sleeves give it that general look. The front waist point and bust shape add the Victorian touch to it. I think it looks great for what you're trying to do.
