Tony Bennett on American Idol

   Sat, July 21, 2007 - 8:45 AM
Wow! Tony Bennett is one of my all-time favorites. He is so classy and has such an amazing voice. I hope the American Idol contestants truly know that this is the opportunity of a lifetime (a dream that most singers -- even the famous ones -- would die to have!) -- To have Tony Bennett critique and mentor you -- very cool!

So, here are my thoughts about last night's performances.

1. Blake Lewis. He really sings well, but I kind of felt like he doesn't really connect with the song or the audience -- he's just performing. I don't FEEL anything. But I like him.

2. Phil Stacey. I love his voice. He has such a nice tone to it -- and to get a complement from Tony Bennett that he is one of the better singers, not just in the competition -- I'm sure he will always remember that. I think he'll be in the bottom three again this week -- it's not his singing, but his look that I think people have a harder time connecting to.

3. Melinda Doolittle. She's always great. I didn't love her outfit this week, but what Randy said about her interpreting and feeling the music is right on! I didn't love the first half but the last verse was amazing! (I typically agree with what Simon says and I think he was right about this performance as well.)

4. Chris Richardson. He is such a cutie -- very genuine, great smile, seems like he's real. I like that about him. I like his personality the best of the guys -- but didn't love the song tonight. I hope he stays.

5. Jordin Sparks. I've liked her from the start. Ryan Seacrest predicts she'll win the competition. I wouldn't go that far but think she'll be in the top 3 or 4. I felt like it was kind of a boring song but she sang it well and the last note was amazing.

6. Gina Glocksen. I think she's at risk and will be in the bottom 3 tonight. She just doesn't seem as sincere as some of the other girls. She sings fairly well, but doesn't seem to feel anything as she is singing. It's just a performance. It's got to be hard to be up there and have everyone judging you.

7. Sanjaya. Okay -- I have to say -- Poor Guy! I really feel bad for him. I think he's a sweet kid, but it has become so much of a joke that I wonder how that can be to know that people are voting for you because they consider you the worst. I wonder how much he knows about what is going on or if he's being a bit sheltered from the press. I thought he might have looked cool if his suit was black and he had on a black hat -- but the white suit actually made me laugh out loud. But it goes along with his daring spirit. I really do feel bad for him and hope that it ends tonight, so it doesn't have to be so uncomfortable anymore.

8. Haley. Another one I'm feeling bad for -- she's trying so hard to be sexy that it's very awkward, uncomfortable, immodest, and not sexy at all -- just a bit skanky. She did the same thing as last week -- starting out singing on the steps, following the camera everywhere. It's not that she's a bad singer -- just doesn't seem to know who she is, doesn't connect with the music or audience -- and seems to be trying to sell herself, rather than loving to sing. I hope she goes home tonight as well.

9. LaKisha Jones. I wasn't blown away by her song this week, but Dang! That girl can sing! She's going to go far, even if she doesn't win American Idol.

So, I'm really hoping either Haley or Sanjaya go home this week. But I think Phil, Chris and Blake may be at risk.

What do you think?
