about me
I grew up overseas as the son of a diplomat in the Foreign Service. I was born in Amman, Jordan, and lived in many countries all the way through high school. I went to college in Idaho and have a BA in Art with an emphasis in Ceramics. Taught art for a couple of years, was later a scuba instructor on St. Croix for a while, and have lived in San Diego since. I had started playing bass in Brazil with my friends there in a HS rock band called Foreign Legion. I continued to play bass in a couple of college bands, and then really picked it up again when moving to San Diego in '96. I have played for The Good China, 20 Miles South, the Blackbirdz, and most recently a trio called OB3. I love the bass, and dabble in percussion for my own enjoyment as well.
I also have a web business where I sell ethnic musical instruments.

Re: Issam Houshan signeture Riqq (in Middle Eastern Percussion) Thank you Faisal for contacting Issam about that. I had no idea that something was "fishy". One thing I noticed, everyone, is that when I went to that link with the photos of the apparent copies, you could not order them, just some contact informa... read more

Re: Issam Houshan signeture Riqq (in Middle Eastern Percussion) Jeffrey- That is so ironic that you mention this, because that is exactly what I was thinking last night when I was wondering how these could be from both Syria and Egypt (as I am assuming this other company is from). Regardless, the outcome, like... read more

Re: Issam Houshan signeture Riqq (in Middle Eastern Percussion) These riqs are made in Syria. I am the one selling these signature riqs (as you probably know by now). I am a retailer that acquired them directly from Issam. I did find a tag on the inside of case. It reads as follows:

The front of the tag say... read more

My Blog

Hi Tribers,

Say, I was thinking about going to see Bedouin Soundclash tonight. Has anyone seen them? Are they good live?

Its in the news again. The continual conflict in the Middle East. No matter how many peace summits are held, road maps for peace, and other valiant yet seemingly fruitless attempts are made, a peaceful end seems nowhere in sight. It is saddening, frustrating, and to many of us westerners, hard to comprehend.

Then I began thinking about the evolution of many instruments. Lets take the oud for example. Here is what Wikipedia has about it in their into:

"The oud (Arabic: عود‎ ʿūd, plural: ... read more

Every year the big music festivals come around, and while they all seem to advertise having a full gamut of musical styles, it always seems to be the same bands every year. Now, of course I am generalizing a bit here, but bear with me. Lets take the High Sierra Music Festival that just happened over the weekend. Hmmm, surprise, surprise, its the usual mix of jam bands tossed in with a taste of reggae and a "bluegrass" band or two, maybe a singer songwriter. Not a sitar, doumbek, djembe, bagpi... read more

Here is a little article I wrote while listening to some great Indian music. I hope you like it. Let me know.

The Meditation of Sitar

For me, its got to be the drone. That all too familiar tone, heard so many ways, but yet somehow always the same. Whether its the chanting of the Buddhist monks in the high mountains of Tibet, or the drone of the Aboriginal Didjeridoo proclaiming its voice into the Australian outback, its all somehow the same and connected. Its something primal, something... read more
