not enough time

   Sun, November 19, 2006 - 12:26 PM
I 'm always trying to create time to write. I have a full time job that pays my bills, but writing and life coaching/speaking is my passion. It's like exercising, you always feel better when you do it, but finding the time is hard. Sometimes I have time to write like I have now, but I can hear my significant other yelling because someone just made a touchdown for his favorite team. So it hard to get inspired in that situation for any serious writing. I have realized though, that finding time to do these things (writing and coaching) is not just for the sake of my craft itself but more importantly my sanity. Everyone should find time for their passion. I have figured out that God has given me these talents not just to use but for my own peace of mind and happiness.

Repeating advice from one of my high school teachers (about 35 yrs ago), I tell all my students to keep a journal: a hardcopy notebook they can carry everywhere with them. I've whipped mine out during lunch hours, while waiting in doctor's and other offices, while riding the subway, in the middle of taking a hike, etc. Just getting into the habit of writing any time and anywhere, even if it's to scribble a "to do" list or to talk to myself on paper, helps -- and you never know when you're going to observe or overhear something that bears recording and preserving. I heard a marvelous one-liner in the supermarket the other day, stopped, and whipped my journal out to get it down. IMHO, the "raw data" are at least as important as any "finished" work.

Months ago I found a great series of posts by Lary (one 'r') Crews on overcoming writer's block, at

Good luck, and keep on keepin' on!
