Techno Moves West - An Interview with producer/DJ Fanon Flowers

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/babd/blog/10123fbc-bb12-4ced-adbb-b5c6f419c6af">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/bfc/70c/bfc70c93-381a-40dc-8cf4-f1ce66c5c35c.thumb" width="52" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>
Fanon Flowers

Interviewed by Djs Solekandi and Disconnect for DEF.

With a history of solid techno productions dating back to 1992 and a 2000 DEMF performance to his credit, Detroit native Fanon Flowers is credited for being part of Detroit's 3rd wave of techno. Though not a household name in techno like compadres Claude Young and Jeff Mills, Flowers' imprints have made their way into the record bags of long-time Detroit techno followers, and into the sets of influencial producers such as Adam Beyer and Surgeon.

Shunning overdone melodies and neo-minimalism, Fanon Flowers' 2004 release "Slovakian nights" is driving, mechanical and funky - solidly entered into the canon of techno classics - with remixes by Exium and Loktibrada on Numb.

In 1996, Fanon Flowers appeared under his Mode Selector alias on the "Detroit: Beyond the Third Wave" Compilation. That same year, Flowers started his own techno imprint, Mechanisms Industries to showcase his work. In 2000-2003, a sub-label project entitled Cetron (short for Creative Electronics) was launched as a platform for more percussion based material.

Recently, Flowers moved from Detroit to Los Angeles, where he's working on another label project, based on the sounds of Berlin and Detroit, which aims to move the classic sound forward. He'll be performing a Live PA of new material on December 28th at Anu for Filter's monthly.

//////////////////////////////

Q1: You've recently moved from Detroit to LA and are establishing yourself now on the West Coast. How do you like the change? What inspired you to move out here, was it the climate or did you need a change? -

Los Angeles has consistently good weather, the California sunshine has helped plant seeds of creativity.

Q2: Many say Detroit is a dying techno city. Is that true?

Techno will never die in Detroit. Techno is firmly planted in the DNA of Detroit. I think the city is going though a phase right now where it appears to be dying.

Q3: There are alot of both styles of techno out here right now, both Berlin and Detroit as well as alot of tech-house and cologne techno, do you see room for growth in the west coast for a hybrid of those sounds?

I certainly do see room for growth on the west coast. Personally, I am drawing from my Berlin and Detroit influences and trying to create new, interesting rhythmic patterns and layers.

Q4: You made your first techno track in 1992, a golden era for techno. Tell us about your own evolution in music making: influences, technologies used, ect. How has it changed in recent years? What gear are you using currently?

I started with a Roland TR-606, TB-303, Juno 106, SH-101 and a Yamaha DX-100. That was my setup in the early 90''s. In the late 90's, I was using a Doepfer MAQ 16/3, Waldorf Pulse, Yamaha DX-100 and the Roland TR-909. These days, I'm using Ableton live with a laptop and controller. As the technology progressed over the years, I felt I've been able to find more ways to be creative as an electronic musician.

Q5: What producers/labels are you following these days and why?

I'm following Rillis, Sleeparchive, and Scion Versions. I like the tight, rhythmic tracks these labels are well known for.

Q6: How would you describe your upcoming work? Any new label projects?

My new material has a lot of rhythm and emotion. The only upcoming project that I'm at liberty to speak about is my new label with DJ Developer called Modularz Sound Division. Our first release should be out sometime in early 2008 via Beatport Distribution. Vinyl will be available also. Artists on the label include Oscar Mulero (Tresor, Warm-Up Spain), Santiago Salazar (Planet-E, ICAN) and Silent Servant (Sandwell District UK).

Q7: You've played DEMF in 2000, but more recently, the Czech Electronic Music Festival in 2007. Tell us about that.

Intensity. They party hard in the Czech Republic, and they know their music.

Q8. What's the craziest shit you've seen in in all your years making and playing techno music out and about.. (if you don't have anything just make something up that seems plausible)?

I would have to say group sex at an outdoor rave in Wisconsin called "Even Further" in 1995.

Q9: You were considered part of the post 3rd wave generation. How has that impacted your career?

Its been a nice compliment to be associated with other very talented artists over the years.

Q10: Where do you see yourself in the next few years with the west coast as your base? do you see it having any bearing on your musical style?

The west coast is now my home base for all American operations. Being on the west coast has also given me fresh inspiration while drawing from my Midwest roots.

60 minutes of Kontakt :: Friday, october 26 at Anu

<div>

Get to Anu early Friday October 26 to catch a three hour DJ set, plus a Live PA premier of new + soon to be released material by Filter's Kontakt.

Kontakt grew up at the onset of Montreal's post-punk milleux, sharing the love of initial imports from the likes of Gary Neuman and Joy Division before the "The Unknown Pleasures" album art became staple dorm room decor.

No fan of disco, or the early house music that followed, Kontakt avoided the decade of dance music's rise and fall, to embrace its eventual rebirth in the form of beat-centric minimalism, ambiant, experimental and techno.

Two years after picking up his first set of turntables only to toss em in favor of embracing the digital evolution, we bring you Kontakt's debut Live PA set.

Hours of exposure to early U.K. post-punk made its imprint. If Ritchie Hawtin had been born a decade earlier in Manchester and had Ian Curtis had listened to Kraftwerk rather than Iggy Pop...then, well....we might have had.......

never mind.

Just get drunk with us, enjoy the show and show us some wigglin'!

    </a>
										<div>Fumiya Tanaka DJ set from Filter.SF at Fat City now available on freqbox.net > freqbox music feed

About the show:

On Saturday, April 28 Japan’s techno figurehead Fumiya Tanaka performed a three hour Dj set at San Francisco’s Fat City during his first U.S. visit.

Fumiya Tanaka is considered a hero among techno fans in Japan. In the U.S. he's known by only a devoted group of afficianados, but works like "Unknown Possibility" have entered into the cannon of techno classics.

Having toured with Jeff Mills in Europe in the mid-90’s, Tanaka’s crisp style has evolved from the harder Detroit techno sound he introduced to Japan over a decade ago.

Today with partner Radiq, Tanaka’s Op.Disc label is focused on a hypnotic dancefloor minimal sound with a fresh artistic sensibility.

Tanaka's performance at Fat City was one of the highlights of our lives as techno promoters, bringing together a cross section of the city, various cultures and old and new techno lovers alike.

If you didn't manage to see the show in person, enjoy the set, and check out the newly available selection of Op.Disc tracks now on Beatport.

With the little time remaining to find an alternate venue on this jam packed Love Fest weekend, we sadly will have to cancel this party.

We thank those who have been coming out to support us in the past. We will try to do something just as fun soon.

Please do join us for the Girls Love Techno party at Anu if you're going out Friday night before Love Fest parade.

    </a>
										<div>In the middle of getting ready to host a ridiculous lineup of international talent for Saturday's Filter party (myspace.com/filtersf), we're packing up our things and heading for Mutek on Montreal (http://www.mutek.ca/). The lineup features some of our favorites: rhythm n sound, monolake, bluepulp and the wighnomy bros among others. These acts rarely, if ever, cross the border into the U.S. but hopefully soon if we have something to do with it. :-)

While in Canada, we'll be meeting (and playing with) the Fukhouse crew in Toronto at ToiBar, Alexis Bowles in Montreal, plus some of our past guests such as Pheek, Miskate and Someone Else. Added to this is a UG with James Patrick in Minneapolis and of course, visits with old families and Montreal and Montana.

Upon return on June 30, we'll be hosting the third Filter party with one of Sweden's biggest techno producers, Joel Mull, together with Seth Troxler, who has helped usher in the new sound of Detroit together with Lee Curtiss and Ryan Crosson.

In short, an exciting month ahead that starts this weekend with Filter.1.2, where we'll be turning down the lights...and turning up the sound!

Last month's Filter looked like this:

http://www.slide.com/r/Vy5tVB2Y7j_X_uVCgRKKZvIN8lYb0kx7?previous_view=lt_embedded_url

This Saturday's party will be darker, deeper and more sultry. Expect a fazer, a laser and several thousand extra watts of sound, not to mention Live PAs by these bad ass mofos:

[a]pendics.shuffle (Adjunct, LA)
mikael stavostrand (Sunset Diskos, Berlin)
someone else (Foundsound, Philly)

We're also very honored to have David Justin of SF's PsyBooty Records representing at Filter this month. His deep experience DJing just about every genre out is going to appeal to a lot of different tastes, from psytrance lovers to techno and house heads to breaks folks.

One of the West Coast most prolific dance music innovators Kenneth James Gibson, aka [a]pendics.shuffle, has been collaborating a ton lately with Swedish electronic music producer Mikael Stavostrand, so we've opted to host both artists at this month's Filter party, May 26 at Fat City.

Enjoy!

Bay Area Beatdrop rides the techno comeback and the latest DJ craze ... WiiJing!
BY MARKE B.
superego@sfbg.com

SUPER EGO "We're trying to reverse the great Berlin brain drain," DJ Solekandi of the Bay Area Beatdrop crew told me somewhat breathlessly. She was preparing to launch Filter.SF, the latest and so far biggest monument to the return of peninsular techno, an "official" Saturday monthly at Fat City, that would spill over — ecstatically — into 8 a.m. "Is that where my brain's been draining?" I replied, emptying my scotch glass warily. "I honestly thought it was circling somewhere over the Hebrides."

But of course she was speaking of the years-long flight of local electro and techno talent to the undisputed club capital of the early Ohs. Reunification — and a city full of unguarded construction sites — definitely has its advantages. "Let's face it: techno's a dirty word here," Solekandi reminded me.

"There's still so much great electronic music evolving in the States, though, transcending itself, working the polyrhythmics. People are shocked that we're fiddling with grooves at 120 bpm — we're just as much in reaction to the whole 'techno has to hit you over the head' thing as everyone else. We don't want to be pigeonholed. We're into stripping all musical genres down, foregrounding different patterns and sequences, but not getting so heady or minimal that you want to stop and think — or jumping off the rails into breakbeat. We mainly started this party because we want to have someplace where people can dance all night. I mean, where did that go?"

Presumably through the Brandenburg Gate. In the "we" above, Solekandi's including the other half of Beatdrop, her mate, DJ Kontakt. (She was a journalist in Budapest. He was a soulful loner in Toronto. When they met online, listening to Deep Mix Moscow Radio, it was love at first IM.) Solekandi then launches, as any fierce DJ would, into a rundown of her cutting-edge technical equipment: Tracktor software, Faderfox controllers from Robotspeak, Ecler Nuo4 MIDI mixer ... Visuals by VJ Mike Creighton? Edirol V-4 Video Mixer, HP ZT-3010US laptop, custom VISP Flash-Flex-Apollo software, Wacom Intuos Graphire tablet ...

Phew. When I hear tech heads, even hot ones, geek out over their digital apparatuses, I sink into languid bafflement. Suddenly, I'm a sultry '60s housewife, lounging on my lime green sectional, slightly pinched by my girdle, nodding while Hubby blathers on about structural changes down at the aeronautics plant. Sounds complicated, darling. Shall I fix us another batch of martinis? May is officially techno month, however, with Movement, Detroit's legendary electronic music festival (www.demf.com), drawing hundreds of thousands to the Motor City and Montreal's gargantuan Mutek (www.mutek.ca) following hard on Movement's gravel-pitted heels — so technology's the ultra. Yet I'd naively thought that since techno and vinyl had been pushed from the clubs by laptops and mashups, iPods and electroclash, they would join forces in a retrofuture comeback assault. No can do, it seems. So rock on, techno mama!

About Fumiya Tanaka :: a preview of April 28th's performance

    </a>
										<div>After about six months of dreaming, scheming and planning, we're down to the final countdown to Fumiya Tanaka's first U.S. performance, a weekend we're sharing together with Compression LA who is hosting Fumiya at King King Hollywood on Friday night.

If you've been following Fumiya's work for the past decade, you're likely familiar with his recordings "I am not a DJ" and "Unknown Possibility" that defined his signature crisp sound and earned him a reputation as one of the world's top techno DJs.

Fumiya is set to take the world's stage again with a new sound that fully explores the edges of percussive-based minimalist techno. His new label Op.Disc, run in conjunction with Radiq, delivers full frontal audio pleasure with a texture-heavy, tribal-dipped, bass-ripping tour with unconvential touches such as broken samples and dubbed-out vocals.

Material from his Dartriix project can be found here: myspace.com/opdisctokyo

See you Saturday!

Bay Area Beatdrop

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

As Japan's most talented and knowledgeable techno DJ and producer, Fumiya Tanaka brought the sound of minimal techno to Japan during the early '90s, and introduced thousands of club-goers to the best Detroit and German producers via his club nights around Osaka and Tokyo.

In 1995, Fumiya Tanaka released his first mix album, "I Am Not a DJ," on Japan’s first electronic dance label Torema, which by then had gained major distribution through Sony. Later that year, he set up Untitled Records, paving the way for more experimental techno via the compilation Abstract Set 1. Soon he was spinning around the world -- often in the company of DJ heroes Jeff Mills, Derrick May, and Dave Clarke .

Another DJ album, 1996's Mix-Up, Vol. 4, prefaced the release of his first production album: 1998's Unknown Possibility, Vol. 1. Tanaka also worked on production for the debut album from Takkyu Ishino of Japan's Denki Groove.

Today, Fumiya runs two labels: Op.Disc and a new endeavor with fellow Japanese minimal techno producer Radiq debuting this month called Dartriix. He is considered a pioneer, bridging the old techno sound with the new movements in the genre fueled by names like Matthew Dear and Ricardo Villalobos.

Here’s what some of his peers have to say:

Pheek (Archipel, Montreal)

“As I was touring Japan, I realized there was a strong underground scene for minimal and other abstract genre. Japan has been isolated, mainly due to a communication problem but they are vivid and faithful fans to artists they love. Part of the open channel Japan has to the rest of the world comes from a few special DJ that are forwarding the music, trying to be ahead of their time and introduce new sounds the crowd. Fumiya is one rare DJ that has a sense of music and a great taste for sounds. Anyone in Japan sees him as a precursor but also, someone that is a reference to what's ahead.”

Sean O’Neil aka “Someone Else” (Foundsound/Philadelphia)

“During my stay in Japan, Fumiya invited me to play with him at his Chaos parties in Tokyo and Osaka. And there I was able to witness first-hand how much of an important figure he is there. Not only is he one of the best DJs that I have ever seen, but the people in Japan completely adore him. In some ways, Fumiya is largely responsible for keeping the techno world going strong in Japan. It's safe to say that Japan needs him, and many people in Japan are downright thankful for him. And I think it's just a matter of time before the rest of the world realizes once again how amazing of an artist and DJ he actually is. Then again, I think this has already begun.”

Mr. Tanaka will perform a 3 hour electronic dance music set at Bay Area Beatdrop’s Filter-SF event, held at Fat City in the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood of San Francisco.

Opening for Fumiya Tanaka are DJs: Saya (Tokyo, Japan), Kontakt (Montreal/Bay Area Beatdrop) and Solekandi (Bay Area Beatdrop) premiering unreleased material by experimental, minimal techno labels: Foundsound, Archipel and Alphahouse.

The evening will also feature a live visual performance designed exclusively for the show by new media artist Mike Creighton (see mikecreighton.com), who is known for VJing Alphahouse's reputed monthly minimal techno parties in St. Louis.

Ruoho Ruotsi is the musical moniker of iroro, a musician and producer currently living in San Francisco. With a background in electrical engineering and a graduate degree in music composition, his productions are meticulous, yet largely improvisatory in nature, informed by interests in natural progressions, reverberant bass accents and inter-wreathed textural deployments. His projects draw upon the visceral aesthetics of dub, techno, garage and the impractical rhythmical leitmotifs of experimental electro-acoustics, fusing them into imaginative new musical opportunities.

Ruoho Ruotsi has released a number of 12" vinyl records on de'fchild productions (San Francisco), SKOR Records (Los Angeles) and has done remix work (on CD, 12" vinyl) for Zero G Sounds (Boston) and Nonesuch Records. He has performed live with the experimental Montreal based Nu-jazz ensemble Cookies, Lines and Hitchhikers (CLH) and has done solo live performances in Philadelphia, Montreal, Seattle, San Diego and San Francisco.

										<div>California's own, Jason Emsley's, has been a hot ticket on the minimal techno circuit over the past few months due to his heavy hitting releases on European techno labels Platzhirsch and Telegraph.

Friday marks his first SF appearance, fresh from headlining parties in Germany with techno legends such as Monolake.

Catch his two laptop set at Midnight on Friday at the Werks. 4.20 - 111 Minna.

Jason Emsley (Platzhirsch/Telegraph/LA)
www.discogs.com/artist/Jason+Emsley

Bio:

In less than year of deciding to go the production route, Jason picked up steam releasing his first tracks simultaneously on French label, 'Telegraph' and the highly touted German label 'Platzhirsch'...followed by remixes for German 'Nummer' and England's 'Clever Music' as well as on LA's label 'Droid Recordings'. Jason's 2nd solo EP on Platzhirsch (released in October) has received amazingly complimentary reviews and is being played by many of the heavy hitters.

2007 has already with a 3rd solo ep completed and forthcoming on Platzhirsch this Spring, following a month's mini-tour in Europe.

Additionally, expect to see Jason releasing his first full length artist album on the same label later in the year. Others to look out for in the first quarter are a solo ep on 'Clever Music' and remixes for Chicago's 'Siteholder'...

Finally, the end of 2007 will see the launch of Jason's own label project 'Align-Audio' featuring another side of his development as an electronic artist.

    </a>
										<div>After a decade of being known as a house music town and being overlooked by European and East Coast giants, it appears a changes is in the air and techno is finally having its day in San Francisco.

All the efforts of a steadfast group of DJs and producers are paying off and there's definately a lot to look forward to!

First, on Friday, Nov 17 Pheek returns to SF to debut a new sound from his new album. It promises to be a superfueled Live PA set that will free your mind and shake your feet. Head over to the Canvas for a night of premier funked up spaced out techno with a sparse, yet sonic flavor.

And then...OMG Jeff Mills makes his FIRST appearance in SF. The god of Detroit techno started it all with a minimal sound that has since come full circle. With Mills paving the way, larger techno events could definately follow.

Finally, Dec. 2 Kontrol launches its new monthly at the End Up, for a longer, more spacious night of techno talent from all over, plus an expanded list of residents that now includes Nikola Baytala. Congratulations Kontrol for keeping this movement growing.

To all of you who have persisted in playing and promoting the music you love, thank you and see you on the dance floor!

Don't miss Montreal's renowned minimal techno icon in the making Pheek (M_NUS, Archipel) as he turns up some stripped down, tripped out, funked up techno reminiscient of Ricardo Villalobos.

The James Patrick Deep Dive:

Aside from being called the "best techno DJ in the US" by the likes of Bruno Pronsato, JP brings an unprecedented energy and enthusiasm to all facets of an electronic music, from production and curation to pushing new sounds on the dance floor.

His work with internet music-label microphono as well as his involvement with a psychoacoustic jazz quartet showcases the hybridization of organic and electronic elements in modern music.

Known for invigorating Minneapolis with a local flavor of techno called microhouse, he also extends his reach into music academia, curating the yearly University of Minnesota Spark festival and helping develop future producers at the IPS school where he holds a faculty
position.

Look for JP's upcoming releases on New York's www.microcosm-music.com and Philly's www.unfoundsoundrecords.com that are sure to reshape any preconceived notions of techno.
