Feeling Love/Being Love

“This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning god, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every s... read more

Just saw Brokeback Mountain. It is an astonishing film, full of love, longing, loss, and difficult consequences. It made me sad. I've spent a lifetime working very hard, trying to achieve in the realm of work and spending far less time in the realm of love and intimacy. The film, for me, is about the consequences of neglecting and denying the realm of the intimate, complicated, scary, difficult realm of getting to know someone else and having them get to know me. The realm of loving, bei... read more

FREE Intro to Body Electric (events » community) Friday, November 2, 2007 - 7:00 PM 61 RSVPs FREE INTRO TO BODY ELECTRIC
Fri, 11/2, 7–9 pm
MenSpirit Studio, 4906 NE 22nd Ave (nr Alberta)

GOALS: This event will give men an experiential introduction to Body Electric and the men’s Celebrating the Body Erotic workshop coming up on 11/10-11/11. The goal of the intro event is to connect adult men in the Portland area with Body Electric’s mission of “helping people experience their potential as healers of self and others through touch, conscious breath, and honoring the wisdom of the body.”

ACTIVITIES: At this event, we will explore listening to your body and connecting with other men through open, conscious breath, touch, and interpersonal communication. We will show a powerful video about the Celebrating the Body Erotic (CBE) workshop and have a chance for questions. Men who participate will experience a safe way of exploring touch with other men by learning how to ask for what they want and how to say no to what they do not want. Clothes will stay on, and we won’t be pursuing erotic desires with any of our touch in the intro.

FACILITATOR: This event will be facilitated by Wayne Bund, a teacher of adults and children, who has worked with men around building intimacy through numerous Body Electric workshops and facilitating Q-land’s Dating Lab.

This workshop is for adult men who have not taken the CBE and for those who have but want to reconnect with Body Electric work. Bring yourself and a friend who might be interested; and we request you RSVP so we’ll know how many people to plan for (if you decide to attend at the last minute, you can just show up, but space is limited).

NOTE: This event is NOT co-sponsored by, or affiliated with, Q-LAND/MenSpirit, but is being hosted at the MenSpirit Studio by Body Electric.

11/3 Honoring Ancestors of the Heart (events » community) Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 6:00 PM 61 RSVPs MEN'S HEART CIRCLE & PAJAMA PARTY
Sat, 11/3, 6:00-10:30pm

In many cultures people often spend important time in the fall honoring their ancestors. This process helps us see who we are more fully, by seeing where we came from, and what the deeper, ancestral patterns may be in our life. This practice can seem rather odd or empty for modern American men, who may have very little knowledge of, or relationship with, their ancestors by blood.

This process of honoring ancestors can get a lot more potent & relevant if we broaden the definition of ancestors to include people who have played an important role in making us who we are, and if we include in this definition people related to us by blood or love and whether living or dead. We call these ancestors of the heart.

In this pajama party, story-telling heart circle, & altar-building ritual, we’ll use food, singing, story-telling, and our altar objects as tools to playfully tell stories that honor our ancestors of the heart.

CO-FACILITATORS: John Galloway (Peacock), a Breema Instructor & long-time facilitator of community ritual; Paul Olguin (Pollywog), a long-time teacher & composer of harmonic music and facilitator of community singing; Bart Church, who loves honoring chosen & blood family and facilitating participatory story-telling & ritual.

DIVERSITY: We welcome adult men & their ancestors of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, experience levels, and backgrounds (including trans guys). Thanks for helping us increase the diversity of men who get invited to this group by forwarding this to any friends/colleagues who might be interested.

CO-SPONSORS: This will be a fundraiser for MenSpirit, a joint project of three non-profit organizations, Q-LAND, LoveTribe, & Spirit Hawk, that empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play.

Suggested DONATION is $7-$30, and no one is turned away for lack of funds, but if you can’t afford the minimum donation, we request you donate time before the event, and that you call us before the event to schedule. Since this is a potluck and we want you to bring foods, beverages, & altar objects that honor your ancestors, please RSVP in advance (so we’ll know what you’re bringing and you’ll know where the event is and have directions).

P.S. -- You don't have to wear pajamas to attend, although your favorite ancestors will love you better & shower you with fabulous gifts if you wear comfy PJs. Bottomline: Wear whatever is comfortable and may remind you of an ancestor of the heart.

11/20 Re-kindling heart fire: touch & joy (events » community) Sunday, November 11, 2007 - 7:00 PM 65 RSVPs MEN TOUCHING WITH HEART:
Re-kindling Your Heart Fire -- the Power of Safety, Touch, & Joy
Tues, 11/20, 7-10 pm

Nico Muniz, LMT, a licensed massage therapist and one of the pioneers of LoveTribe's heart-centered touch events, will be helping us create the safety and body awareness to explore touch & pleasure with ourselves & other men without pursuing erotic desire.

As the dark, cold season arrives, it's important for us to re-kindle our heart fire by allowing ourselves permission to explore pleasure as a meditation and a gentle, fully-embodied conversation. We will explore being zealously loyal in each moment to the authentic pleasure of our whole being.

There will be no genital or anal touching and no pursuing of erotic desire -- so we can really focus on the kinds of pleasure that are possible through deep relaxation, mindfulness, openness, trust, surrender, and honesty with compassion. Men can hold & care for one another with out competition, sex, or fantasy.

In most cultures throughout history, male friendship has usually included very important physical & emotional intimacy between friends. In modern times men are not allowed to care for one another through healing touch & physical closeness.

We shall return to our birthright: love & acceptance from men expressed through simple physical and emotional intimacy.

DIVERSITY: We welcome adult men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, experience levels, and backgrounds (including trans guys). Thanks for helping us increase the diversity of men who get invited to this group by forwarding this to any friends/colleagues who might be interested.

CO-SPONSORS: MenSpirit, a joint project of three non-profit organizations, Q-LAND, LoveTribe, & Spirit Hawk, empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play.

Sliding scale donation will get you:

• INTERACTIVE DEMONSTRATIONS: A wide variety of health providers will provide 20 minute, interactive demonstrations of practical ways to manage stress with:
o massage,
o yoga,
o exercise ,
o acupuncture,
o time & money management
o addiction recovery

• RAFFLE of free items like professional massages, health club memberships, acupuncture treatments, spa treatments, time management coaching sessions, etc. (raffle proceeds benefit the non-profit co-sponsors)
• HEALTH PROVIDERS, information, & free samples from a wide array of stress management experts

“LGBTQ people sometimes struggle with a lot of stress during the holidays trying to juggle birth & chosen families, work, & the ghosts of past holidays,” said Kendall Clawson, Executive Director of the Q Center, the community center for the Portland area LGBTQ community. “As a relative newcomer to Portland, I’m struck by the amazing array of stress management resources our community has to offer. We’re pleased to provide a forum in which members of our community can learn practical stress management strategies as well as connect with local resources.”

"This time of year there is increased risk of depression for LGBTQ people because of how homophobia and heterosexism play out during the holiday season," said Dr. Adrienne Wolmark, director of the YWCA Counseling Center. "Too often we don't hear about the amazing resources & coping strategies LGBTQ people in the Portland area have created to deal with this stress. I'm excited to create a forum in which we can learn about and interact with the supports our community has developed. I want to celebrate the diverse, accessible, and interdisciplinary stress management resources that are available to serve the many parts of our community."

A sliding-scale donation is requested at the door, and proceeds will benefit the three non-profit co-sponsoring organizations. This event will be wheel-chair accessible, but sign-language interpretation cannot be guaranteed (email to request). While there will be interactive presentations every 20 minutes throughout the fair, you may come & go as you like. Check the website for the schedule of presentation topics & presenters. If you’d like to volunteer to do outreach, set up, welcoming, or cleanup, please contact Soul Dancer at 503-922-1411 or pdxstressmgmt@yahoo.com. If you’re a health provider who’d like to table at the fair, please also contact Soul Dancer to see if table space is still available.

The co-sponsors wish to thank West Coast Health & Fitness for their generous corporate sponsorship of the first Holiday Stress Management Fair.

“Holiday stress can be effectively managed if you have a team & tools to help you learn to juggle a lot of expectations and opportunities at once,” said Bart Church, Q-LAND/MenSpirit Program Director. “The Holiday Stress Management Fair will be a fun opportunity for all of us to find the teams and tools we need to become expert jugglers, or at least drop fewer balls more gracefully this year than we did last year.”

11/19 Wanderlust Cycling Event (events » community) Monday, November 19, 2007 - 6:30 PM 65 RSVPs
Q-LAND/MenSpirit, a non-profit men's wellness network, invites you & your friends to the next . . .

WANDERLUST: MEN'S CYCLING RIDEABOUT
Monday, 11/19, 6:30 pm Wild Oats, NE 15th & Fremont

When a group rides together not knowing where they're going, all these experiences unfold -- things like team, flow, laughter, feeling lost, and that whoosh of being free AND connected as men on the move together. This experience of riding together in the dark urban jungle pulls out some experiences in our bodies and hearts that are difficult to reproduce in modern culture. Perhaps they are akin in some strange ways to the experience of playing or hunting together in the wild. Perhaps its just good old fashioned freedom.

WHO: Facilitated by Jonathan Carpenter, who is a carpenter and a lover of cycling (but who most assuredly is not an expert on cycling, wanderlust, or riding about).

WEAR: So we'll be visible, consider wearing something warm, bright, and of course bring your helmet, bike lights for the front & back of your bike, some water, and raingear if the weather is inclement.

WHAT: can you do to invite friends who might be interested in this rideabout experiment?

CO-SPONSORS: We request a donation of time (1-2 hours) &/or money ($5-$25) to support MenSpirit, a joint project of three non-profit organizations, Q-LAND, LoveTribe, & Spirit Hawk, empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play. Wanderlust Men’s Cycling Event (events » community) Monday, January 21, 2008 - 6:30 PM 66 RSVPs Q-LAND/MenSpirit, a non-profit men's wellness network, invites you & your friends to the next . . .

WANDERLUST: MEN'S CYCLING RIDEABOUT
Monday, 1/21, 6:30 pm (1st & 3rd Mondays)
Wild Oats, NE 15th & Fremont

When a group rides together not knowing where they're going, all these experiences unfold -- things like team, flow, laughter, feeling lost or silly, and that whoosh of being free AND connected as men on the move together. This experience of riding together in the dark of the urban jungle pulls out some experiences in our bodies and hearts that are difficult to reproduce in modern culture. Perhaps they are akin in some strange ways to the experience of playing or hunting together in the wild. Perhaps its just good old fashioned freedom. Don’t worry, it’s not too daunting – we stop for dinner along the way for good food, good cheer, and to get warm & dry.

WHO: Facilitated by Jonathan Carpenter, who is an artist, carpenter and lover of cycling (but who most assuredly is not an expert on cycling, wanderlust, or riding about).

WEAR: So we'll be visible, consider wearing something warm, waterproof, & bright, and of course bring your helmet, bike lights for the front & back of your bike, some water, and raingear if the weather is inclement.

DIVERSITY: We love riding with adult men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, experience levels, and backgrounds (including trans guys). Thanks for helping us increase the diversity of men who get invited to this event by forwarding this to any friends/colleagues who might be interested.

If you want to donate time, we request you call Bart at 503-2230-8822 X1 to schedule this BEFORE the event you've registered to attend.
