A tail of seven possums

So I have this seperate garage on my property where the washer and dryer are. About two weeks ago I forgot to close the small door for several nights in a row, thinking nothing of it since the back door opens into my yard and nobody else can get in there without breaking into the yard. Besides the garage is filled with a mountain of crap my sister left in there, in a huge pile that blocks access to about two-thirds of the interior.

Some days later I heard noises from the back of the garage, from an area I could not reach without a prodigious amount of effort. I assumed a possum had gotten in there because I have seen possums in the yard several times and there is no evidence of rats. So I left the door open until late one night, then went out there and shut the door after dark. It seemed like the possum had still been in there because I heard more noises the next day. So once again I left the door open late at night and actually saw the possum in the yard - so I went out and shut the door. That was about four days ago.

Yesterday I heard noises in the garage yet again and walked around looking for any possible entrance other than the door - there is none. Last night I was doing laundry and a possum came right to the door while I was standing there - it walked away sullenly when I hissed at it. Then I heard more noises inside the garage and realized there must be babies in there - I felt terrible! I had shut off the babies from their mother and they had been locked in there for three days, cut off from mom's support. About this time I actually saw a very young possum walking around the back side of the garage - very cute! Also looked very hungry.

So I put out a small bowl of cat-food and another of water near the door and went to the other side of the yard to watch what happened. Sure enough a young possum came to the door and fell out into the yard (there is a ten-inch drop). After a few minutes I went back inside the house and before too long I heard the bowls clacking around. I went out again and with my flashlight I saw fourteen eyes looking at me out of the garage - two large eyes and twelve smaller ones in a group above. Soon mama came out of the garage with six babies clinging to her back! She ambled off into the yard and I went over and shut the door.

I am so glad she got to them in time and they did not starve in there - they were very docile and un-threatening as well as being extremely cute. I only wish I had taken my camera out to get a family photo, but this one I found online is pretty much what I saw.

Oh my gawd!!
Those are the cutest lil' things!! I'm also so glad they were reunited with momma and you didn't have to play the "What's that smell?" game later on.

Maybe they'll come back for a visit and a photo shoot?
