some great Jiddu Krishnamurti quotes

"The constant assertion of belief is an indication of fear." - J Krishnamurti

"Truth is a pathless land. Man cannot come to it through any organization, through any creed, through any dogma, priest or ritual, nor through any philosophical knowledge or psychological technique. He has to find it through the mirror of relationship, through the understanding of the contents of his own mind, through observation, and not through intellectual analysis or introspective dissection. Man has built in himself images as a sense of security—religious, political, personal. These manifest as symbols, ideas, beliefs. The burden of these dominates man's thinking, relationships and his daily life. These are the causes of our problems for they divide man from man in every relationship." - J Krishnamurti

bothof those make such sense to me. but it does kind of worry me--how are most people EVER going to get to that second idea? especially in our culture today.

Yes, I can see the difficulty in that second one. I think part of where we'll stumble comes from the fact that our culture has ingrained in us a deep fear of pride (or you might want to call it self esteem), and in pride's absence arrogance grows instead. Arrogance doesn't self-nurture, it's vampiric--depends for its affirmation on tribute from others. And it gets its beliefs from outside, too, and that's why it cannot countenance diversity--its own sense of identity requires a community of orthodoxy. The most rampantly religious people I have ever known have been the most arrogant, while preaching humility and eschewing the "deadly sin" of "pride." Well I think maybe it's time we raise people to have*more* pride, not less. If a generation has pride (oops, I meant "self esteem!") I think individuals are freer to avoid "carved in stone" beliefs, and to give themselves permission to acknowlege that the universe is not inherently meaningful, that any meaning it has is what we invest in living within it. On an individual and a community level I think greater self esteem and self confidence will free us up to make our own way on the planet, and give us more flexibility to adjust our path when it doesn't work. Whereas belief tends to keep us stuck in what doesn't work, and thus reinforces our fear.

I agree Briar, the most self-righteous and arrogant people I have ever known are often deeply religious (and often not very spiritual). Holier-than-though types really annoy me. I think that, in general, religion has become a barrier to truth, instead of a path towards it.
