The Second Set Syndrome
Mon, November 5, 2007 - 12:31 PMI managed to score a decent time slot on the Main DJ stage from 9-10. However, I wasn't very happy with my set. An hour is waay to short to DJ. It doesn't allow for any kind of vibe than "up, up, up". The DJ setup was upstairs on the balcony, so it was really hard to A)hear what it actually sounded like and B) connect with the crowd. Plus I always get nervous when I'm on the really BIG dance floor. Too much pressure.
So, I get done with my hour and I'm left a little disappointed. One of the reasons I love to spin is to make that connection with people. When they're really grooving to the music that you love and there's smiles and booties shakin'.
Well, at 10 o'clock the music is supposed to shut off on the smaller sound systems outside, however they keep going and around 10:30 I approach my friend Ed who is DJing on one of them and ask him what's going on. He's like "the museum told us to keep going until the Park people tell us to stop. It's great but i'd like to go party at some point". and I'm all like "Well, I'll take over for you when you're ready to quit".
I go on a few tracks later and it happens, The Second Set Syndrome. I'm relaxed, focused and really feeling the people. I'm outside on a Djing off a table my feet are on the same ground everyone is dancing on and the Dancefloor is packed. I can do no wrong musically. The dancers follow my sound as I change up styles a little and bring them to different places. I wish I had some CDs to give people who kept asking me who I was and where could they hear me regularly, what?
Well, we got shut off at 1am by the parks people. I was getting tired and was starting to lose some of that magic, so I was a little happy to stop. Well, this isn't the first time The Second Set Syndrome" has hit, but it is the first time I really recognized it. I hope I haven't jinxed myself now ;)

2nd set
Your set outside really was incredible. I've never heard you spin like that before and you made me want to dance until my legs fell off. Remind me to come dance at all your second sets from now on.

Second syndrome is that my second set of a night is always much better and Fun than the first. Usually it happens at the afterparty.
NY Decom was more like being on the playa with lots of different stuff and theme camps, not just music. Philly was much more like a Dance party. Both were fun. Thanks Spatch! |
