The Second Set Syndrome

<div>So, this weekend was the big NYC Burning Man Decompression party at the Queens Museum of Art definitely a great party, but I don't think I would make my Top Ten Parties of All Time. But this is besides the point. I need to talk about a phenomena I've been noticing with my DJing the past year. It's called "The Second Set Syndrome".

I managed to score a decent time slot on the Main DJ stage from 9-10. However, I wasn't very happy with my set. An hour is waay to short to DJ. It doesn't allow for any kind of vibe than "up, up, up". The DJ setup was upstairs on the balcony, so it was really hard to A)hear what it actually sounded like and B) connect with the crowd. Plus I always get nervous when I'm on the really BIG dance floor. Too much pressure.

So, I get done with my hour and I'm left a little disappointed. One of the reasons I love to spin is to make that connection with people. When they're really grooving to the music that you love and there's smiles and booties shakin'.

Well, at 10 o'clock the music is supposed to shut off on the smaller sound systems outside, however they keep going and around 10:30 I approach my friend Ed who is DJing on one of them and ask him what's going on. He's like "the museum told us to keep going until the Park people tell us to stop. It's great but i'd like to go party at some point". and I'm all like "Well, I'll take over for you when you're ready to quit".

I go on a few tracks later and it happens, The Second Set Syndrome. I'm relaxed, focused and really feeling the people. I'm outside on a Djing off a table my feet are on the same ground everyone is dancing on and the Dancefloor is packed. I can do no wrong musically. The dancers follow my sound as I change up styles a little and bring them to different places. I wish I had some CDs to give people who kept asking me who I was and where could they hear me regularly, what?

Well, we got shut off at 1am by the parks people. I was getting tired and was starting to lose some of that magic, so I was a little happy to stop. Well, this isn't the first time The Second Set Syndrome" has hit, but it is the first time I really recognized it. I hope I haven't jinxed myself now ;)</div>

<div> There's a great article about the Gnome Love party in this week's
issue of the Village Voice. You can pick it up at your local grungy
coffee shop/gay bar and turn to page 44, or if you're not in NYC read about it here:

<div>***************************

RULES - Once you've been tagged, you have to write a blog with 8 facts/things/habits about yourself, saying who tagged you. In the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

***************************

Wow, I've been tagged twice. Once by Eeva and once by Dusty. Thanks girls!!

Here we go:

1. I have one blue eye and one green eye. It's kind of freaky actually. Stare into my eyes sometime and I'll show you ;0)

2. I have never left the U.S. except for Canada. Although I have travelled the States by train exstensively. I prefer to travel alone.

3. I fought tooth ad nail to never become a DJ. I knew so many people who were DJs and wanted to do my own thing. That all ended when I moved in with a DJ and started to buy records. It's all been downhill from there. Black crack.

4. I currently have 201 tribe friends! Holy shit how did that happen?

5. I'm really only 5'5.5" I always say 5'6" but didn't you learn to round up in Math class?

6. I own over 100lbs of legos. it's an obsession I've had since I was kid.

7. I hate the suburbs will never ever ever move back there. i spent 18 years of my life there and couldn't stand it. If I ever move out on NYC, i'm moving to the back country.

8. My girlfriend and I sleep with a stuffed Alligator, hes really comfy. He even has his own "alligator pond' in our apartment. You have to come over to our place to see what I mean. His favorite song is werewolves of London

i now tag: Janneth, Hercules, Friar Tuck, Abject photo, Thera and Caroline</div>

    </a>
<div>Can I say how Happy I am. This week, we not only got a new mattress(go craigslist!) we received in the mail our new quilt top feather mattress. After a year or so of sleeping on Anna's old mattress, that literally sagged in the middle, this is a godsend for my back. I'm a much happier camper now. It's amazing how much a good bed will do for your spirits.

On the other hand it's much harder to get out of bed in the morning now. </div>

<div>Ok, I'm walking down the street and coming towards me comes a cute couple holding hands. Something just not right though. They both have white earphones in their ears.

I mean, come on. I have an MP3 player(not an Ipod) and i love it. I listen to it all the time, when I'm trekking through the city. but if your with someone, take the damn things out of your ears. Pay attention to the person your with, maybe even talk to them.

I've seen this with mothers and their children on the subway. The mother has her son/daughter in tow and has a CD walkman in her ears and isn't paying any attention to the kid. The kid will probably get hit by train when the mother isn't looking.

										<div>Funny story

Friday night, a bunch of us went to see Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory. I walk in to the theater with my DJ bag in tow. I had a gig that night and didn't have time to go home inbetween. So, I walk in and the security guy does a double take when he sees my bag. I'm thinking,"Oh well". He asks me to open the bag and makes me empty out the entire thing.

Records, check.

Headphones, check.

Needles, check.

Vinyl cleaner, check.

No bomb, check.

Afterwards, I make the comment, "that was a first". He replies, "I think you would agree this was better for all of us". I repack my DJ gear and go into the theater.

The Funny thing is, he didn't even search the backpack I had on my shoulders the whole time. I don't think he even noticed it.

A continuation of this story happened at dinner afterwards. I was looking for somewhere to put my Dj bag in the restaurant. The proprietor saw me doing this and cleared a small space for it. Jokingly he said, "You're not from London are you?"

Wow, twice in one night.

<div>I've always been a pretty private person. I usually don't let on to people how I'm feeling or what's really going with me. Maybe because of this, I tend to play the part of confidant and psychologist to many people. I'm the rock to lean on and umbrella to to hide under.

However, I have the recent desire to write things down. observations and thoughts on life. But just so you know, this is NOt a blog and i am NOT a blogger.
