The magical Barcelona: La sombra del viento, La carta esférica, El Club Dumas. Although I must admit I read them in translation. Even so, there's something wonderfully slightly strange about translated prose; the diction, the vocabulary, the dialogue is just that bit removed from works written in English. And when the books themselves are slightly strange and off-kilter the effect is perfect.
America: Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale, a phantasmagorical story of New York City, then Kafka's Amerika, an even more oneiric ramble, and now Bradbury's I Sing the Body Electric collection and Steinbeck's Travels With Charley. Not quite as good as taking a road trip itself, but certainly the next best thing.
