What did the pink panther say when he stepped on an anthill? Dead-ant, dead-ant, deadant deadant deadant (to pink panther theme song) I don't know if he has even seen the pink panther so it was very surreal 
Penny Park is a community built play area, ampitheater, and picnic area. The park was a dream put to paper in 1998. It took over 6 years to complete. All materials, labor, and costs were donated by the community. It took an estimated $450K to make the park. It is the ONLY play park in Silver City and where most of us went to play with our kids. Birthday party events happen there. Earth day events happen there. Summer music festivals happen there. Movie in the Park happens in the summer months there. The park originally was called Community Built Park, but came to be known as Penny Park when kids would bring their pennies to school to donate to the building of the place. In the last year, a skate park was added next to the play area. There has been a lot of debate in our community over whether this was a good idea, lawsuits over injury and all that. Regardless, it was opened at the start of the year. In less than a month, one teen was severely injured from not wearing a helmet. So the town sent more police to patrol and make sure helmets were worn. This led to one teen attacking a police officer when told he could not skate until he went and got a helmet. After the attack, the town closed the skate park. A town meeting ensued, and the park was reopened with "Skate at your own risk" signs as well as legality signage stating everyone should wear a helmet. This still does not deter the teens from not obeying the helmet law of course, but the town feels safer legally. I bring all this up as part of this story because those same teens are now about to get blamed for a fire that happened at the park. So many of us are upset and mad.

On Friday night/ Saturday morning...late late late (~2AM) a teen whose usual hangout was the skate park decided to set the play area on fire in Penny Park. This totally destroyed half the park. The big big dragon slide that was a big hit with kids of all ages, is gone. The tubes melted and the structure burned to timbers. The 3 level maze of structure, complete with climbing web hanging bars and fun hiding places for little ones....ashes. I can only assume that the teen who perpetrated this sad event is a very troubled young man. Apparently, he was lighting mailboxes the night before, caught, fined and let go pending investigation. But as what happens in a small town, rumors are flying everywhere. Divisions are happening with adults pointing to the teen skateboarders, and the teen skateboarders getting angry. Sad in so many ways. I am on the list of volunteers to rebuild this wonderful place. I am hoping the community can rebuild themselves socially too. For more information: pennypark.org/index.shtml

This is one of those times I feel like I am succeeding as a parent somewhere along the line. For all those time I have to grit my teeth to keep from barking and wonder if any of it is sinking in, here is evidence...written no less...

Yesterday, the kids were playing "cars" in Xander's room and as usual a fight broke out. Serra crying "Hey! Nooooo!!!", and Xander "You can't DOOO that Serra". I winced and waited. Yes, the argument continued. *sigh* Must be Mommy Face and go in to break it up. I came at them calmly...a lot more colamly than I felt believe me and quietly told them I think they needed to play away from each other so they should each spend some quiet time in their rooms. They could come out when they were ready to play nice and be good to each other. "That means no whining Xander and no yelling Serra". Serra went to her room after scooping up Xander's favorite cars. Xander looked mad and closed his door (without a slam which was a nice touch I thought). After about 5 min, Xander comes out and asks for a few sheets of paper so he can write a letter. He writes to his friend Leah occasionally so I thought it was a nice way for him to divert his anger and get his mind off it. He goes back in his room and closes the door again. About 10 minutes more passes and Serra comes out and says "I'm sorry Mom. Can I come out?" I tell her "You should be apologizing to your brother. He was just trying to play with you." "Yeah ok." She goes in Xander's room with a backpack on and says "Xander, I am sorry. I want to play with you. I'll be nice now. Can we go play camping?" Xander is working on his letter. I thought he would say "No, I am busy" (as he usually does when he gets into his writing) but instead says "Yeah, let me finish this though. I am almost done." Then they hugged and Serra waited patiently. He finished and they went off to play again. With crisis averted I forgot all about the letter. I found it this morning on Serra's nightstand and was floored. Here is the contents (in cursive and the only errors is a mix up with "to and too" and some punctuation): "Dear Serra i am sorry that i argued and made you mad But don't you understand that you got me in trouble? i'm also sorry that i admitted your part in it but you do understand that i love you right? i hope you do because i do. i will love you til the end of time -love, Xander P.S. We're going camping together" Yes, I cried, sappy Mommy that I am. Just thought I would share a happy story. Hope your day is as nice!
