</a>
<div>You are hereby invited to sponsor the Heartsong Playa Hydration Project, in Black Rock City at the Basura Sagrada, by adopting chai by the gallon. One gallon of chai costs about $20 to produce, and a gallon will serve 18 people.

The Heartsong crew is volunteering our manufacturing time and abilities, transport and refrigeration of all the tea, construction of the carts and service at Basura Sagrada. It is our great hope that our fellow citizens will sponsor the purchase of spices, sweeteners and teas. All food donations are tax deductible through the non-profit that is supporting the temple project this year.

There are two easy ways to gift your fellow citizens with a quench to their thirst:
1.	Paypal: Click here https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&amp;business=hschai%2eadmin%40gmail%2ecom&amp;item_name=Heartsong%20Playa%20Hydration%20Project&amp;no_shipping=0&amp;no_note=1&amp;tax=0&amp;currency_code=USD&amp;lc=US&amp;bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&amp;charset=UTF%2d8or just use PayPal to send money to hschai.admin@gmail.com.

All donated funds will be spent on ingredients for playa hydration. Heartsong will not profit from this gift to the community.

2.	Mail a check to:
Heartsong Playa Hydration Project
2220 Ashland St.
Ashland Or. 97520.
Again, this money will only be spent on ingredients for BRC. We hope tons of people participate in this opportunity because we are all very excited to offer free flowing hydration through the temple.

Other ways you can help with this project include:
~ Forward this e-mail to many friends
~ Bring water to the playa for sun teas
~ Sign up to serve tea at the temple (how fun is that?)

Eight years ago, friends and I started a beverage company in Ashland Oregon. Our mission? Raising the Vibration of the Nation through Hydration.

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company brews and bottles tea in Ashland, Oregon at a place called the Chai Hut. We just built it over the last two years and we think it is pretty cool. We grind our whole, organic spices by bicycle power. We juice organic citrus “in-hut” for the Pepper Brews. We purchase our honey directly from Oregon Apiaries. We brew in 100-gallon batches in a factory we built ourselves.

For three years, as individuals, we’ve been bringing our teas out to the playa, serving the city builders and the citizens of Black Rock City. Burning Man is one way that as individuals we get to express our passion for hydration. It gets us out of the factory and in touch with people. Over the years we have built various forms of mobile hydration stations. In 2007, we served 500 gallons in 5 days! We love to activate hydration at the place people need it most. Truly, as a collective, we get off on the opportunity to hydrate thousands of partying people in the desert!

And then we heard the theme for 2008 and recognized the alignment with our American Dream…and well,

We started thinking big.

In synchronicity, our friends Shrine and Tucker were awarded the great honor of building this year’s temple. Soon, they invited us to serve mad amounts of tea at the Basura Sagrada temple. Gifting us the opportunity to make our American dream come true! It’s also a sweet revolution because by serving mass quantities of tea for free at the temple we gently remind BRC that the spirit of the city is commerce free.**

So we took a weekend and went to Oakland to build four mobile hydration stations. Of course they are all made out of trash! They are inspired in design by the Basura Sagrada Temple and graced by the paintbrush of Shrine.

We vow to make and serve as much tea as our fellow citizens sponsor.

** While Burning Man is a commerce free event, the city runs Center Camp Café, which sells a handful of necessities: Water, coffee, chai and lemonade. You can bring your own mug but no worries, they’ve got thousands of disposables. To encourage radical self-reliance, we will not be providing cups with our tea this year.

<div>It was 3:41 am when I was lying in bed, recently awoken by a strange, albeit unsettling, dream. I noticed I had a text.
Not too long later, I noticed the black sky lightening to that strange space of blue, alerting me to the inevitable dawn. how long does that last anyway?

It was 4:56 when I heard the first bird song of the day. it was a little lighter outside, but not too much.

I was typing by 5:12.
I hadn’t even fallen asleep some time after midnight.
The throws of stress.

the ravens come after the smaller birds, with the stellar jays in between. a few bats flutter past my balcony on their way home.

the lawn sprinklers are on at 5:37.</div>

in 300 miles we would have three flat tires

    </a>
<div>It was a warm and sunny afternoon outside of the warehouse in Oakland where Basura Sagrada is being built, Heartsong had built some mobile hydrations stations and the some of the finishing touches were being added, especially being blessed with Shrine’s handy-work with a brush: an honor indeed. They are gorgeous and will serve the folks at High Sierra Music Festival, Oregon Country Fair, and thousands of citizens of Black Rock City, mostly in Basura Sagrada.

KLC arrived and after a few goodbyes and such and things, her and I were in the GoGo MoHo on our way to Ashland, a mere 340 miles or so. She mentioned how she loved hot dogs and off we went…

Well, an hour or so into the drive, still on the 505, we were chewing bubble gum and blowing bubbles. Much like bubbles pop, so do tires, on occasion.

We were doused with the smoke of burning rubber and the obvious rapid “thunk-thunk-thunk-thunk” noise of a flat tire. We pulled over and worked things out. Tuk provided some ground support. A kind CHP stopped in and mentioned how the GoGo MoHo made him think of Haight-Ashbury and the “um….let’s see….what do you call em? Ah, spiritual types. They like nature and things.” He decided to leave after not too long. The tow truck folks came and threw the new tire on and off we went, of course, not without the older gentleman showing me his new LED flashlight, making sure to point out how it plugs in to charge and how bright it is. As we drove off, KLC mentioned how a hot dog would be perfect…

A little ways down the road, somewhere on the 5, around Willows, the GoGo MoHo thought it might be funny and be a repeat offender. Again, we were doused with the smoke of burning rubber and obvious rapid “thunk-thunk-thunk-thunk” noise of a flat tire. It appears that the spare tire was in not-so-good condition and could only hold out for bout 150 miles or so. Bummer.

Well, this is inconvenient. We kept our cool, even through several phone calls with KLC’s AAA and their apparent ineptitude at noticing her renewal to “RV Plus” status. I even became a little angry with them, but managed to remain calm and collected though it was obvious no one could help us at that hour. As you can imagine, by this time, KLC was totally craving a hot dog….

So, here we were, on the I5, around 2 am with one of four back tires flat, no spare tire and no help coming. We trucked on, super slowly, half way in the breakdown lane, halfway in the highway, about 20 miles north to Red Bluff. We managed to pull safely into a Wal-Mart parking lot. I think we went to bed by 3 or 4 am with my alarm clock set for 8 am. KLC accidently set hers for 7 am, which we would later discover. I swear that as I was falling asleep that I could hear KLC talking in her sleep about hot dogs….

Awake and a little groggy in my head, we drove the GoGo MoHo over to Wal-Mart where they proceeded to tell us that they would not do anything for us. KLC managed to find a nice girl inside and with her assistance, we found a cool tow truck company that brought two used tires and replaced things on site. KLC was a little bummed when she realized that she had forgotten to get a hot dog for breakfast before we were back on the 5 by 10:30 or so….

Sweet! Thirty miles to go, just over the Siskiyou Pass, a mere 4,310 feet in elevation, the highest spot on the I5. Moving along, laughing, talking, driving, and stitching, an extremely loud “POP” sound accompanied immediately by a loud and deflating “hiss” comes from the rear of the MoHo. I just burst out laughing. I couldn’t help it, it was too fucking insanely ludicrous that in less than 300 miles we would have three flat tires. But I did feel horrible for KLC. She SO wanted a hot dog…

No time to wait. We trudge on, repeating the half-in-the-breakdown-lane maneuver. Only this time it is super sketchy as there is now traffic and many 18-wheelers, compared to the night before when there was little traffic in the middle of nowhere.

We miraculously make it over the pass and drop into Ashland. We are giggling as we pull into the Chai Hut Parking lot. Thankfully, KLC has a few hours to get organized before she needs to get to the Medford Airport to get to Sonic Bloom. Unfortunately, KLC never did get her hot dog before getting on her flight. Maybe Jamie has a few at his house…

(editor’s note: KLC now has six brand new tires on the GoGo MoHo awaiting her return in Ashland before the Oregon Country Fair.)

The Emrg+N+See Festival is one of the only Oregon-based, three-day events dedicated to showcasing: emerging underground electronic music acts and producers from a broad scope of genres, digital &amp; traditional media art, performance, and independently created fashion &amp; products.

Emrg+N+See was born to serve. Conceived in a small café once upon a time in Ashland Oregon, a small band of creatives set out to produce events that brought together emerging artists alongside current topics of social and environmental awareness. That seed was planted in January 2004 and has grown through the years into the festival we know of today - an arena of artist appreciation and integration into popular culture and commerce.

From west coast to east, from Inner being to outer space – it doesn’t matter which – people with skills, musicians with passion, artists with vision – all come to collect themselves under the banner of Emrg+N+See! </div>

<div>We are what we think
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with a pure mind
And happiness will follow you
As your shadow, unshakeable.

How can a troubled mind understand the way?
Your worst enemy cannot harm you
as much as your own thoughts unguarded.

But once mastered,
No one can help you as much,
Not even your father or your mother.

a physically identical response to that of heroin

    </a>
<div>Here’s what happens in your body when you assault it with a Coke:

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don’t vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain – a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

After 60 minutes, you’ll start to have a sugar crash.

How many sodas have you had today? How about your kids? As of 2005, white bread was dethroned as the number one source of calories in the American diet, being replaced by soft drinks.

The average American drinks more than 60 gallons of soft drinks each year, but before you grab that next can of soda, consider this: one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. Not to mention the fact that it’s also your largest source of dangerous high-fructose modified corn syrup.

Let’s take a look at some of the other major components of a can of soda:

    * Phosphoric Acid: Which can interfere with the body's ability to use calcium, leading to osteoporosis or softening of the teeth and bones.
    * Sugar: It is a proven fact that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging and many more negative side effects. Most sodas include over 100 percent of the RDA of sugar. Sugar is so bad for your health in so many ways, I even created an entire list outlining 100-Plus Ways in Which Sugar Can Damage Your Health
    * Aspartame: This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilispsy/seizures.
    * Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion, breast lumps, birth defects, and perhaps some forms of cancer.
    * Tap Water: I recommend that everyone avoid drinking tap water because it can carry any number of chemicals including chlorine, trihalomethanes, lead, cadmium, and various organic pollutants. Tap water is the main ingredient in bottled soft drinks.

Clearly, the over-consumption of sodas and sweet drinks is one of the leading causes fueling the world-wide obesity epidemic.

One independent, peer-reviewed study published in the British medical journal The Lancet demonstrated a strong link between soda consumption and childhood obesity. They found that 12-year-olds who drank soft drinks regularly were more likely to be overweight than those who didn't. In fact, for each additional daily serving of sugar-sweetened soft drink consumed during the nearly two-year study, the risk of obesity jumped by 60 percent.

Here’s another sobering fact if you’re struggling with weight issues: Just one extra can of soda per day can add as much as 15 pounds to your weight over the course of a single year!

Other statistics on the health dangers of soft drinks include:

    *
One soda per day increases your risk of diabetes by 85 percent
    *
Soda drinkers have higher cancer risk. While the federal limit for benzene in drinking water is 5 parts per billion (ppb), researchers have found benzene levels as high as 79 ppb in some soft drinks, and of the 100 brands tested, most had at least some detectable level of benzene present
    *
Soda has been shown to cause DNA damage – courtesy of sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, which has the ability to switch off vital parts of your DNA. This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's

If you are still drinking soda, stopping the habit is an easy way to improve your health. Pure water is a much better choice, or if you must drink a carbonated beverage, try sparkling mineral water with a squirt of lime or lemon juice.

There is absolutely NO REASON your kids should ever drink soda. None, nada, zip, zero. No excuses. The elimination of soft drinks is one of the most crucial factors to deal with many of the health problems you or your children suffer.
If you struggle with an addiction to soda, (remember, sugar is actually more addictive than cocaine!) I strongly recommend you consider Turbo Tapping as a simple yet highly effective tool to help you stop this health-sucking habit. Turbo Tapping is a simple and clever use of the Emotional Freedom Technique, designed to resolve many aspects of an issue in a concentrated period of time.

    </a>
										<div>(from the last heartsong newsletter)

Wow!

It is barely a word to begin to describe the last four years of my life working in the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company alongside the Chai Mama and taking on the title of "The Chai Guy."

I began as a volunteer, moving to Elizabeth's house from the mountains of the Little Applegate Valley in southern Oregon. I had a great room over looking the Jacksonville brewery, a converted garage in her backyard, in trade for my time and energy, which was mostly the Farmer's Market, deliveries, and brewing. Now I am a proud owner and can ride my bike to the Chai Hut form my apartment in Ashland. Some might say that I'm "living the dream." It's true, in many ways. I am my own boss, get to work alongside my best friend, and I am constantly thanked for "what I do." I had no idea that my environmental policy degree would carry me so far!

But living this dream is not without its challenges. I am sure that a business degree would come in quite handy, but then again, I am learning far more from experiencing business than any textbook could teach me, which I often find myself reading in my (very limited) spare time. I am also lucky to have some excellent mentors.

In the last four years, I worked to bring Heartsong to Eugene. This was the first time that Heartsong flew the coop, so to speak, leaving the Rogue Valley, much like a child off to college. It was not too long after that we found ourselves brewing up a storm in Jacksonville for some co-ops in Portland. It quickly became quite apparent that our demand far, far exceeded our ability to supply. Always a good problem to have in business, right? This fork in the path led us to a larger building, what would become the Chai Hut.

When it came time to move, we simply packed up and moved, more or less, with big wide eyes, smiling faces, and a scrub brush in our hands. We thought that the Chai Hut would be the solution. Which, in many ways it has been and is, but the path we chose has been a little rocky and has presented many learning opportunities as well as challenges, most of which consisted of financial matters. It took quite a bit of time and money just to clean the Chai Hut, never mind the costs and time and learning curve of building a brewery. This has been one of the most exciting things for me. There is a great level of satisfaction and pride I feel when I see the four-head filler pumping Mate Fire or Rooibos Chai (or any brew!) into glass bottles.

And yet, here we crawl toward another fork in the Heartsong path, one way leading to rags, the other way leading to riches. I prefer the path to riches, leaving a swath of hydrated and happy people along the way. The latter is already occurring on a daily basis. Last week I had a customer call and tell me repeatedly how much she loves Heartsong Chai and just this morning, a friend told me how cool he thought Heartsong was as he we discussed our opportunities and choices in life.

The last four months have consisted of monumental growth for Heartsong. As you read above, Heartsong began New Seasons Markets in Portland, PCC Markets and Madison Market in Seattle, accounts in Chico and Sacramento, exhibited at the Seattle GreenFest in April and have been invited back to the Oregon Country Fair and will return to the Temple at Burning Man to hydrate the masses. Heartsong is now in Whole Foods Market in Portland. Whole Foods! Our demand continues to grow, but this time, with our brewery up and running, we are ready, willing and more than able to meet that demand.

At the same time, April proved to be the most financially challenging month of Heartsong, ever. May looks like it might have the same challenge, while June looks good and from there on out we have solid traction, we are solvent, and we are growing healthily and steadily, just as perfect as any business model might suggest.

I am excited to experience Heartsong every day in all of its strength and integrity. I am excited to wake up every morning knowing that I am living the dream of working with my friends and being constantly and consistently thanked for my work. I am excited and proud to be a part of a company that can walk it's talk, through challenges and through growth. I am excited to be the Chai Guy.

     In Gratitude &amp; Love,

     Chad

i worry about getting ready for a greenfest in seattle to sell stuff while my friends unfurl "free tibet" banners on the golden gate bridge, risking their lives to help stop another cultural genocide in the world.....

it is similar to whenever i hear the brett dennen lyrics, "in a world of suffering why must i be so blessed?"

<div>FACTS:

~Amount of water needed to produce 1 pound of wheat: 25 gallons
~Amount of water needed to produce 1 pound of beef: 2,500 gallons
~A 16-year study of 6,000 vegetarians and 5,000 non-vegetarians in the UK found that the vegetarians generally had lower LDL cholesterol levels and lower death rates for each of the mortality endpoints studied.

THINGS AN ETHANOL MASCOT WOULD NEVER TELL YOU

~The grain required to fill a 25 gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol would feed one person for a year.
~The grain to fill the tank every two weeks over a year would feed 26 people.
~U.S. taxpayers now subsidize the ethanol industry at a rate of 51¢ per gallon (a law in effect until 2010).

    </a>
										<div>how exciting!

so, for months and months and months, on First Friday in Ashland, this place called Tabu has hosted the party. All the crazies in Ashland ascend upon Tabu to hear some stellar music, dance, and imbibe.

This First Friday, which is today, is the premier of Heartsong Pepper Brews at Tabu being used in mixed drinks.

So the Chai Mama and I will be giving out samples of the Pepper Brews for your tasting pleasure and then you can go over to the bar and order your favorite drink made with the Mate Fire, Habanero Honey Brew, or Thai Dragon Tonic.

It's gonna be super fun....
c u there.</div>

<div>For The Story

The more I'm looking
The less I find
The less I find peace of mind
The more I struggle
The less I feel
The less I feel free
The more I know you
the more I see
and the more I know me

What a story we make
Each day another revelation
What a story we make
come let's fill our hearts with jubilation

The more I open
The more I love
The less I fear
For each day we're given
I thank God
I thank God that we're here

Cause what a story we make
Each day another tribulation
What a story we make
Come let's quench our thirst in the waters of creation

For the story
is in the water
For the story
In the water
