Wow, I'm so glad the Universe was persistent in geting me to r.i.m.e. on Tuesday night to see Mihirangi fully rock the joint!

Hers is a solo blend of a diva voice, super-layered soundscapes recorded in real-time, funky beats, beat boxing, provocative defiant lyrics - all flavoured with her Maori roots from the proud warrior tribes of New Zealand. Walking on East Van streets it's pretty common to find myself on an unscheduled scavenger hunt. On a late-night costume-hunting mission to Value Village I passed a decapitated swivel chair, the bottom intact and looking functional right up until the back rest. Maybe broken off by someone on a swivelling rampage or taken by an angry departing lover or converted to a padded bathtime headrest - who knows? But there rest its discarded remains...
