<div>As a follow up to Ram's discussion on problems with illegal immigration, I'm posting the following from Bob Sullivan's "Red Tape Chronicles." It really hit a nerve - I've never seen so many responses.

http://redtape.msnbc.com/2008/05/two-lives-one-1.html#posts

1. As for the argument, "These are good people who are only trying to feed their families." I concur. Such people also exist all over Africa and Asia as well. If we admitted every decent foreign family into the US, we would be completely unable to provide basic services for anyone. This is why we have restrictive immigration laws.

2. As for the "You're all illegal immigrants here." My ancestors came over from Europe, half before there were laws and half legally early in the 20th century. I was born here. Anyone born in this country is a legal citizen, no matter what his or her parents' status is. Incidentally, this is an extremely liberal policy, and the US is one of very few countries who maintain it.

2. Since any decent family will do whatever it takes to feed their children, you need to set up a system that accounts for that and still maintains order. There is no point in demonizing illegal immigrants if you make it easy to enter, easy make money and easy to exploit. The system promotes this and it's foolish to expect people (employers as well) not to take advantage of it.

3. On the other hand, I don't think you need to maintain a postion that someone in the country illegally has the same rights as someone with a green card or someone who has taken the time to become a naturalized citizen. There seems to be a lot of hypocrisy and denial about this. It's one thing to insist that all human beings be treated with respect and decency. It's quite another to declare that all human beings are the equivalent of US citizens should they find a way to get into the country.

4. The real problem is that the government seems paralyzed to even confront the problem in a logical and effective manner. If you make it harder to get jobs, you get fewer immigrants. The economic slow-down has produced this result without any government intervention (unless you count their usual economic stupidity). It wouldn't be that hard to run a computer check of duplicate number use and then notify employers and workers of duplicate use. The IRS could do this as well - think of the other draconian methods they employ when they want your money.

In any event, I find it truly bizarre that a car dealer preparing to lend you money can find out if more than one person is using your SSN and yet, you cannot.</div>
