I am consistently amazed at how seldom this is seen as a desirable habit to which to aspire, even among people I'd consider successful, responsible adults.

about me
I live in Northern New England, am a transplanted 14th generation Virginian (and yes, I like New England, too).
I write novels, collect rejection slips, dance whenever I can, design sweaters and knit them, and do a lot of alternative lifestyle writing -- specifically about polyamory. (www.polyamorousmisanthrope.com is my column).

I made this to try to cheer up my son. He's got the flu and really shouldn't be trick or treating. He was going to dress as Spock, but decided not to do so since he's ill and not going trick or treating.

I don't like sitcoms in general. It's not that I've no sense of humor at all. I do. It's very small, harsh and (as one friend put it) sanguine.

But another reason I generally don't like sitcoms is that they're weak, very weak, on what I go to almost any art for. Tell me a story. No matter what else, I need a story to engage my mind and emotions. My tastes in this are pretty child-like. When I want a story, I want interesting characters, a good guy, a bad guy, a concrete problem fo... read more
If you dislike an individual, especially a public figure who desires power, I'm not sure boosting the signal is the best way to keep said individual out of public consciousness and thus out of power.

Just a little thought.
People sometimes talk about not being good at math as if it's cute. I boggle. I'm a writer and a lot of what I do every day involves math, abstracting concepts and the like. If I couldn't do math, I couldn't:

* Knit a sweater or a sock, * Write a business plan * Plan a book (don't laugh. Laying out concrete ideas in a logical order is a form of math. Don't you guys remember your high school geometry? I don't know about your class, but my class didn't involve many numbers). ... read more
A friend of mine on LJ [1] turned me on to a Firefox plugin of epic usefulness - Leechblock (addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fi...on/44760. It prevents you from accessing sites that, in your judgement, are timewasters during specified periods of time. It’s not like a nanny software that blocks sites forever, but gives you the option of limiting time on a specific site or banning those sites from being accessed during certain hours. If you’re really worried about self control, you ca...

Fourthed.
If we teach people to ask for what they want, getting indignant because one was asked isn't going to work out. Polite "No, thank you"s work wonders. discussion post on Fri, November 6, 2009 - 11:12 AM

Are you kidding? I can whittle Polyamory Commandments down to one.

If you're looking for a sharp mind, warm hugs, huge smiles, and eyes you could fall into, then you've come to the right place. I count my friendship with Noel as a marvelous gift.
