sitting in the in between
Evac was a success and Priceless will come later
And we have some ridiculous number like 53 days before Playa Time.
I'm now taking orders for the playa. Discounts for those who place orders before August.

And I'm also taking orders to catch up with friends...
I haven't had a break this summer yet, and i'm determined to have one now.
Shall we have tea?

Art vs. Fashion vs. Clothing- please share your thoughts

I'm dumb for not posting earlier... but this is the way it is sometimes.
I'm writing a paper tomorrow afternoon debating this quote:
"Everyone loves to diss fashion, that creative shaper of society...There is this suggestion that fashion is not an art for or a cultural form but a form of vanity and consumerism..."
I'd like to gather some broader perspective on this as I have some ideas, but haven't been able to find many solid essays online talking about it.

Here are my thoughts so far:

Fashion and art have been reliant on each other for a very long time- Much of the artwork from back in the day was centered around what people were wearing and the style of that period.

Fashion designers are constantly pulling their inspiration from art
Artists are constantly pulling their inspiration from fashion

Fashion is more than an art form
It's a business to supply other artists with income: photographers, stylists, illustrators, etc.

Is there anyone else out there with thoughts on this?

You know, real San Francisco spring: Sunny and Warm with the extreme possibility of it being very cold very suddenly....
This calls for a celebration:
I'm making Bloomers!!
Now we can cartwheel and ride bikes without being indecent. ^,^
I have many fun colors I'm making them from... the normal solid colors and some fun ginghams
I'm also happy to talk about easy access (snap crotches) and extra frills.
Let me know if you're interested

The books that make me cry

A long time ago, while reading The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, one lesson: Learn to see the world through the eyes of a child.
Every day I read an average of 9 children's books.
There are childrens books in my showroom dealing with all kinds of different things- from ABC's to loosing grandparents to sickness. There are even a few dealing with race issues- how to cope when your mommy and daddy are different colors and how it feels when you can't have the brand new shoes everyone else does. All the books take place in different settings- from the Brooklyn streets to markets in Iran.
And every once in a while, I come across a book that makes me very sad.
Usually it's something like "My Little Grandmother Sometimes Forgets" or "What Comes After A Thousand?"
Shortly after experiencing this sadness, I'm reminded and amazed at the depth in these books.
It reminds me how amazing and malleable children are and how adept they are at understanding broader subjects than most adults give them credit for.
I guess my point here is this: Every day at work I'm reminded about being a child. And I'm reminded how amazing children are.

This is more or less part of my job.

Z broke his elbow on wednesday last week.
I drove down to Pescadero and picked him up
Then woke him up every two hours through out the night on concussion watch.
I've been changing bandages and cooking and staying with him since.
As of Friday, I'm officially on spring break. Woo!
It's been nice to lay back and breathe.
Go out for coffee and sleep in.
If there's anyone out there who wants some sewing done or wants to hang out, now's the time to catch me.
Next monday it's back to the grinding board with the last 7 weeks of school.
I'm hoarding up all my good ideas for costumes.
Just you wait!

yep, that's me.
another year older and still rockin hard.
I still have people look at me with eyes bulging saying "you're HOW old?"
Some of them think I'm younger, some older.
Funny I don't consider myself my own age.
I'm apt to not remember how old I am, dropping blank stares at people who ask.
Right. Oh yea, I'm twenty six. 26. two six.
Or at least will be at 7:21 this morning.
It's a weird one this year.

Visiting my family back in Colorado was good.
I got a fairly stern reminder that time is passing.
My Nephew turned 2 while my Aunt hasn't reached 50 yet and is slowly dying from emphasima and liver failure.
My father just celebrated what he calls his re-birth-- 18 years of quadriplegia after a skiing accident.
And I'm diving headlong into school-- four years from now I should know way more about fashion than I ever have before.
No promises of doing anything big for my birthday this month (the 21st)-- go 26!

When writing resumes, I've had to pare a lot of thing out or down to make it seem like i was a sensible hire. Many people probably just didn't believe that I'd work 50-60 hours a week, days, nights and/or weekends some of the time. But really, in Colorado, you can do that and STILL have enough time to keep your life in order otherwise.

Most of you know I have two snakes that share my room.
A few of you have seen them and know just how big Aurrie is...and how sassy Evey is.
Well, to save you a long story, I need to find my snakes a new home.
They live together in one cage and love each other, so i don't want to split them up.
Please let me know if you're interested.

Missing tradition

I thoroughly miss family tradition.

I don't have clear memories of when I was very young, before my father's accident. According to my Mom, we'd often go skiing for christmas and come home for stew and soak in the hot springs before bed. I know there were presents, I have a vague memory of a christmas tree and a red headed barbie doll (from my grandparents). Other than that, I'm not sure.

After we moved, I remember sneaking through our house, having woken up at four in the morning with anticipation pumping through my veins. Getting out of bed, waking up my brother and sneaking upstairs, skipping the three steps that creaked. Sliding through the house, going through great lengths to avoid the squeaky parts of the oak floors. Sneaking up to the tree to run my hands over the presents that weren't there the night before. The presents were all labeled From Santa, although my brother and I already knew.My parents never told us there wasn't a santa claus. After a while, it just became a known fact. We'd poke around the stockings, knowing that touching a single thing would give us away. Then we'd slip back downstairs, making sure to avoid all the creaks in the house.

After my parents divorced and I moved in with my dad, traditions changed. We celebrated Hanukkah and Solstice, Yule, Kwanzaa and Christmas. There were latkas and mahtza balls, minorahs, wreaths, hot cider and hot chocolate, christmas trees, carols and presents, and sweets. Always, starting the beginning of December, my step-mom would start making fudge, macaroons, and all sorts of other bits of tastiness that I don't remember the names for. We'd have brunch on christmas, then go around opening presents. Kiri always gave us socks and underwear. Mom's presents would come in a box a few days or weeks before and my Dad always gave thoughtful gifts.

Two or three years ago, my step-mom and father stopped giving christmas presents. Decidedly stepping out of the 'consumer's holiday'.
Gifts from my Mom are discussed over the phone, things are ordered online and sent. There are no cookies or little bits and bobbins.
This year, for the first time in thirteen years, my mother, brother and father will all be in the same town for the christmas holiday.
I will be staying in San Francisco.

These new ways feel less organic, though I'm grateful for the upfront, honest ways my mother and I gift each other and I understand where my father and his wife are coming from, though thought is more important than cost to me.
Admittedly, I don't miss the fighting. My family isn't so bad, but we've all had our days.
I miss having holiday traditions in my life. Of being with family, decorating a tree, and giving gifts.
Slowly, perhaps I'll move myself back to a space where I have that.
But for now, if you're having a lonely holiday, know you aren't alone.
And don't forget-- loneliness can be solved with making a phone call.
Happy Holidays

I've been working away at gifts for the holiday, and I've been debating whether to post this or not, but here goes...
This isn't something I normally do.
I don't like pointless consumerism more than I don't like to ask people for things.
I'm starting school at the end of January, and need to fill out my supply list.
Being the season,
the best gift anyone could possibly give is one of the items below...

That's right.
Yours Truly just enrolled at the Art Academy.
Shooting for a BFA in Fashion Design.
Oh, but why? you might ask.
Aren't I happy with the renegade success I've found?
Simple--
Yea. I love making clothes.
Yea. I like working when I want.
But I'm tired of starving and worrying about making rent every month.
I've been in the work industry for ten years and I want something better.
AND I don't want to loose my mind trying to build a business without knowing exactly what I'm doing.
So.
Off to school I go!!

And what does this mean for you?
Funner, faster, better clothes!

I'll be hauling my car to a dump yard in the next week if I can't find anyone to take it.
It's a 96 Honda Accord with 120k miles. It has two broken windows and a minor exhaust problem.
The stereo's been stolen (hence the broken window) but otherwise it's in decent condition.
It needs less than $500 worth of work and it'll be a great car for someone.
Pay me whatever you think it's worth... just please, take it off my hands.

I have a car in my possession that needs a new home.
A 2-door 96 Honda Accord
It was a gift from my brother and has brought me nothing but trouble.
More recently vandals broke out a window and stole the cd player.
I can't afford to replace the window and really would rather just get rid of the car.
It has a few problems with it, nothing that's not repairable with a little dedication.
There's a window motor that needs replaced... a few other mechanical issues that will need to be taken care of in the long run...
But really, that's it. I just want the thing out of my life.
I think it would make the fantastic beginnings of an art car

I'm asking $500 or equivalent trade.
