<div>...that it's great to have another day off, but today's MLK day. Here's a guy who knew he was going to be killed, and yet he continued on to do what he could to make the world a better place. I can't think of a better example of what a real hero is.

Here are a few things that he said before he was finally cut down:

A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

There is nothing more dangerous than to build a society, with a large segment of people in that society, who feel that they have no stake in it; who feel that they have nothing to lose. People who have a stake in their society, protect that society, but when they don't have it, they unconsciously want to destroy it.

Our nettlesome task is to discover how to organize our strength into compelling power.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every tenement and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last."

<div>Shitty news...sorta'.

I'm not in Oaxaca. I'm right back in sad-sack Sherman Oaks, CA. The whole thing turned out to be a pretty ghetto experience. Two full hours of giant lines at the airport (Mexicana Airlines) with nobody who seemed to know what the fuck was going on. My bag full of camera equipment may have been sent off on another plane ( I got a phone number from the manager, and all I get is a message that their mailbox is full all day....douchebags, I say...douchebags), they fucked up all of my infrared black and white film despite my warning, and then I finally made it on the plane (which was kind of late... about 1am at this point). The plane eventually starts to take off, I felt unusually relaxed and cool about everything (I normally have a near phobia of flying. I seriously think eveytime I fly and land safely, it's a freakin' miracle.), and as we pick up some serious speed, some weird noise happens..the plane doesn't take off. We slow down and they announce some shit in Spanish. The crowd sort of moaned. I was like, WTF? Then they announce in English that they had an indicator light on about a hydraulic problem, and we had to stop for maintenance. They taxi back in...another announcement...it'll be another 2-3 hours while they replace a pump. I couldn't fucking believe it. I actually laughed a little to myself...here I am a guy who is normally so terrified of flying, I feel pretty cool about it this time, and this shit happens. So, they let everyone off the plane. I just planned on going to sleep on the floor until it was ready to go, and then I saw a group of people gathered around the ticket counter. I went over there and listened in. A bunch of people were bailing out, getting future credit, etc. I didn't even think that was an option. I really didn't want to get back on a plane that almost just took off with fucked up hydraulics either, so I just joined the other people who had just about pissed themselves a few minutes earlier, and I got a refund, too. I was really happy to be able to get the F off of that plane. I guess I'll be going down there for my little adventure some other day. Maybe I can get someone to go along next time? I think I'd like that better, anyway.

I was gonna' go out to New Mexico originally...out to White Sands, and some other places. I wanted to do some more photography and shit out there, so that's what I'm thinking of doing now instead. I'll just take this whole experience as a sign that this time just wasn't right to go down to Oaxaca, I guess. So now, I'll probably still have photos to post, but they'll be from NEW Mexico...not the real deal. ;)

Any takers on going to Oaxaca/Huautla de Jimenez sometime in the future? Just lemme' know! :)

Talk to ya'll later!

<div>
Hey, all!

So, I didn't get to go anywhere for the holidays. I figured I'd try to make up for it by going somewhere afterwards. I decided to take a little adventure. On this Thursday night, I'm going to be taking off to Oaxaca, Mexico until next Wednesday. (I really, REALLY, hate flying, but that's another story.) If all goes right, from Oaxaca I'm going to try to find a way to get to a little mountain town called, Huautla de Jimenez. It's a 6-7 hour somewhat dangerous journey up shitty, mountainside roads that have regular landslides and no safety railings, no communication...nothing. Anyway, this village is where the Mazatec Indians live. They don't even speak Spanish (so I'm super-screwed language-wise). From what I've read, they speak a language related to Polynesian. (?!?) It's a matriarchal society, and all of their shaman are women. Their religion and ritual revolves around the use of, "The Flesh of the Gods"...psychoactive mushrooms. Walt Disney, Woody Allen, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin have all supposedly made lonely trips up to those mountains to receive the ritual from a healer lady named Maria Sabina (she's pretty famous in that area of Mexico) back in the day. She's gone, but the tradition continues in her family as well as others. I'm going to try to go there and do this myself. If I make it there, I'm gonna' take a lotta' pics and video, and I'll try to post it all when I get back. If I don't make it there, I'll just end up traveling and having fun around the city of Oaxaca, and hopefully I'll have internet access at the hostel I plan on staying in. It should be pretty crazy either way. I'll post stuff on my blog here if possible.

Wish me luck and a safe trip! Talk to ya'll when I get back! :)

<div>Hey, all!

So, I went to BM for the 1st time in 2005. I still have a tough time trying to describe the whole experience other than saying it was amazing. That being said, it was pretty freakin' miserable too, in that I didn't bring much shade, etc. Daytime was pretty tough sometimes.
I went with one pal. I'm not sure if he's going yet this year or not, but we both agreed on a couple of things: 1) We need to bring more shade and/or come in an RV or something, since we don't have a bg-ass dome to stay in. 2) It would be more fun to try to come with a group next time.
Anybody have a group forming for this year? I'm in Los Angeles, and that's the way I wanna' go this year if anyone's down on starting one up, or letting me in on one already formed?

Thanks you guys
!
Happy New Year!

<div>Look, he didn't cure cancer, but he made me laugh....a lot. Whenever I think of funny movies I saw as a kid, he's the first guy who comes to mind. It's always sad when we lose someone who brought so much freakin' laughter into the world. People like him are more important to us all than we give them credit for.

RIP Richard Pryor
