Last Saturday Jan 20th I went to the Weird Genius Real Science Fair. An awesome idea for creative outlet of geeky minds.

I especially liked the video of analog fractals made from sound waves and Liz and Eric's non-Newtonian Goo. They invited everyone to play in and jump on the goo (acts like a solid with broad high velocity impact like a palm or sole, acts like a liquid when poked with a finger). Simon commanded the stage with his bz reaction [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belo...reaction]. Another experiment attempted to determine the preference mice have for various play-world objects- toy cars won by a landslide. They had a maze, but the mice were climbing over its walls! There was an area where people could put on suits to simulate an insect's sensory experience and try to walk around a 'garden'. Dr Mike made his old-fashioned vinegar/baking soda volcano- but grand scale- maybe ten feet high and fifteen feet in diameter!
For grins, there was booty rap playing on the speakers and $10 bottles of wine for sale at the bar!

So, I had to try Buy More Stuff. This is performance art where you take a Buy More Stuff sign, go downtown, and encourage shoppers to Buy More Stuff. (Michael Holden's idea)

What an incredible experience. This is not just some fun thing to do, though it is fun. We really moved and angered people. I would say 40% of people had a negative reaction. They ferreted their kids away, yelled at us, asked us if we were hired by Nordstrom, asked us what church we were with...people just couldn't figure out our message. Wow. Many seemed offended that we would make fun of them. I told them it was their choice to be offended or not.

Some photos follow. Barry, my roommate, is wearing the fab black and white suit- made for him in Thailand. JenW, his ex, is wearing the sharp black suit. Lars, my ex, is also there, as are Michael, his daughter Kalea, and Becky.

I am wearing the fab brown and black coat made by my friend Isis. It was a great conversation piece.
"So, what is your message?"
"We want people to Buy More Stuff!"
"You can't be serious. Why?"
"Because when you Buy More Stuff, you're happier- besides, how will your family know you love them? I bought this coat for $200! If you don't buy now, they might run out, or you might run out of time!" usually at this point, eyes are rolled and the person walks away. tee hee!
Oh, and we converged with Santarchy. They joined in our chants on their megaphones...

I am constantly amazed at the layers and layers of love and support that I see in my community. We waste no time with illusions and deception and count on each other for brutal honesty. We see each other through the roughest of times and come out stronger for it. Thank you all for being there, willing to roll with the tide. Thank you for acting with integrity. Keep it coming. I love you.
