Captain Erotica's Top Ten Benefits of Playing With Power Exchange
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 7:56 AMThus I present to you all:
Captain Erotica's Top Ten Benefits of Playing With Power Exchange:
1- The arts of Power Exchange DEMAND that you give your partner/lover/playmate (P/L/P) extreme focus. Focus is one of the highest gifts you can give another person.
2- The gear is sooooo sexy... At first you might be put off by the idea of what some of the gear is FOR but if you just look at the straight up asthetic of the gear it is very beautiful. Yes not every bit of gear is asthetic to everyone but in the broad spectrum of kinky gear there are bound (pardon the pun) to be many that you think are delicious.
3- Power Exchange activities broaden what one normally considers to be "Erotic" or "Sexual" thus helping many couples who have developed sexual patterns to break out and try some new ways of stimulating each other.
4- Power Exchange activities require excellent communication, most often in advance of any erotic activities (at least in the early phases of things when you are working out boundaries, limits, likes and dislikes)....This compulsion to communicate gives rise to much exchange of information that might otherwise go unsaid. It helps motivate two lovers into being clear, thinking things through in advance and making sure both your needs are being met.
5a- For a submissive/bottom/slave the experience of letting go into the guidance of another being can be a form or spiritual/emotional/psychological release, allowing them a time of ego-loss, meditation or just a really wild fun ride.
5b- For a Dom(me)/Top/MasterMistress the experience of guiding someone can be a spiritual experience where one achieves a meditative state due to the responsibily of having the other being(s) involved under their guidance and care.
6- The preparation required for a power exchange play allows a person to bring their best self to the experience. While it is true that spontaneous power exchange does happen, most often it is scheduled, thus allowing the parties involved to spend some time getting into the type of headspace they desire. This act of preperation brings more conciousness into a sensual experinece; from laying out toys, to scripting a role play, to siting za-zen prior to a scene...
7- SadoMasochism is energy work - All of the arts of touching are in their essence a form of "energy work" ie the energy placed into someone's body via touch of any kind has an impact on their energy field. Thus any form of SM will change the energy of the persons involved. This energy exchange, when done conciously and intentionaly can be a powerful tool for self and other transformation.
8- The pictures and videos that result from power exchange can be totally utterly beautiful... another way to say this is that the very activities of Power Exchange are artisitic expressions of the infinate ways we may shape, shift, and play with our bodies as humans. Capturing those images for others to see and experience is an artform in and of itself.
9- It's pretty fucking FUN!
10- All of life has power exchange embedded within it. It is the hard-wired coding of our reality... The yin-yang dichotomy that drives everything from DNA replication to the creation of light in our sun to the up's and down's of daily life. Practicing taking on the roles within this dichotomy in a concious fashion can help benefit our spiritual process when those roles are thrust upon us in a wanton fashion by the universe. (one of my favorite examples of this is for people who are TOO dominant... like "I am Dominant ALL the time" types... for those people I like to ask: "How Dominant do you feel when you are Stuck in Traffic with hundreds of other people?")
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are many other benefits of course, and also the benefits shown above can be elaborated and drawn out into many levels of nuance and personal perception. However, within these ten benefits you should find some clues to why I believe that Power Exchange has much to offer almost anyone who cares to explore it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please bear in mind that the stereotypes of Power Exchange arise from their lenghty and highly public history as a "mostly-non-consensual-artform" (vis slavery, rape, prison discipline, public humiliation etc.).
Captain Erotica believes that it is entirely possible to set one's own context for Power Exchange that rises up above it's negative past, giving a positive new context for some ancient misunderstood and misused human artforms.
~Namaste~

I wish I'd had this to read when I was in my last relationship. It would have given me something more concrete than just ....I need play! In 4 years...I think we actually interacted on that level maybe 5 or 6 times tops...and I kept wondering WTF was wrong with *me*.
Blessings and Love to you Captain, ize |

You have such a way with words, you totally expressed our souls!
Yes and power exchange does not have to be hard and hard core, this is why we started a soft core S&M play party up. To lightly explore and give people a chance to watch and see if this is for them, with no pressure, to touch and explore.

This is a really interesting way to think of it all, for someone who hasn't really tried it, but who is looking for new ways to open up and improve communication....thanks.
